I would like to show you how I'm making bases for my Necron Army for Warhammer 40K.At present time I'm making bases for Destroyers.

What we need:

something for base - I used plasticard 2mm
cork mat
sharp knife
ruler (the best will be metal)
plastic spurs
cutting callipers
glue - white glue & hot glue
sand with gravel
Green Stuff putty and magnets
small power drill 3 & 5mm

I cut circles from pasticard. I really recommend this callipers from OLFA, easy to use and with great quality

Next I drilled holes. 3mm for the rod and 5mm for magnets for future better caring my minis in metal box.

I'm putting magnets for transportation. For me the easiest way is to use green stuff but you can use whatever you wand / like, for better keeping in place you can cyano acrylic glue on magnet and area. Than nothing well be able to move the magnet.

I didn't had to worry about green "cakes" - they will be covered shortly.

Next again with Green Stuff I put "crystals" in place. I made them just from spures with exact knife and add additional edges and cut in short pieces on different angles.

Ready Crystals

I ripped cork matt for small pieces and with hot glue put them on basis. You can use White Glue as well but it will dry some time. Hot glue is ready in seconds.

Next with White Glue I put sand & gravel.

I put masking tape on transparent rods before painting. If you want to paint them later just skip this.

Black paint for the beginning. I used Vallejo Black Primer. Quick & easy.

I paint each base with attention to cover every spot (but later falling sand opens some spots)
For painting I used H&S Infinity with nozzle 0,4mm for faster painting.

Ready bases are drying fast so we can paint just in time. Normally this Primer dries fast but needs about 24h to cure properly but on bases we can skip this.

Crystals paint with brush using Vallejo Deep Green.

I changed nozzle in my Infinity for 0,15mm for better control and than put Cold Grey and later Stonewall Grey.

With Dry-brush I put Vallejo Sky Grey

And next Dead White

Lets start making Crystals
With airbrush I put 3/4 of crystal length and it's areas with Vallejo Game Air Sick Green.
I used first time GAME AIR pallet and really recommend them.

Next with Escorpena Green a paint 1/2 of crystal length and smaller areas than before.

With Game Air Light Livery Green I paint 1/4 length and gently crystal area.

With Moon Yellow I highlighted the spots

On the end I used Dead White to add gently lights spots to contrast the base.

With brush I paint crystal edges with Game Color Dead White

On the end I put Gloss Varnish with brush only on crystals to make them shine.

Here are finished bases

One remark on the end:
Thanks to the Fine Art company I put fPc valve on my Infinity and it's really great thing. Easy and quick pressure adjustment works very well. Working with thick paints like Greens and with thin paints like White. Before I had to change the pressure on regulator on compressor and now I have the quick and easy way.

Is there something to add to bases ? Sure, but those are for play so the effect is really good.
Write comments that you like that Step-By-Step tutorial or not.

Awesome tutorial. Could you provide an estimation of how long it takes to complete each base individually (excluding drying time)?

Great tute!

What compressor are you using?

Do you find vallejo superior in most respects?

Do you think your infinity is superior to badger brand?

Thanks

Thanks for the comments and to the answers:

- making one base (excluding drying time) should take around 20 - 30 min - the longest is highlighting edges cause you have to be really careful, when you're making several bases you don't loose so much time to several paint change.

- the compressor is one of the most known - simple chines with 3L tank.

- I use Vallejo for several reasons like price to amount ratio, AIR paints are ready tu use from bottle, big pallets, bottle with eye-droplets,

- Infinity compared to other: here I can't say that it's better or worse than Badger or Iwata. All of them are really good. I choose H&S because it's build fits me more. And Infinity because spending 30€ more then Evolution and have best of the best from H&S.

I really like the bases you made. I am trying to create the same with blues though.

I don't have an air brush.

Any C&C you could give me on these?

The right base is ones I did before reading though this tutorial. The left is after.

If you made them without airbrush You're good.

I've got only two remarks:
1 - try to make thinner edge lines or blend them a little
2 - cover some parts of crystals with ground - they should look better.

But still it's really good job mate

On yours, you used a yellow to bring out a glow. Is there any color you recommend for blues?
