Welllp, my last thread got overrun with "orks should be Germans" or whatever, but I still want to know. PLEASE PEOPLE, don't discuss which historical peoples are which fantasy race........

Okay! I noticed a bit ago that there are fantasy settings for present day (shadowrun), medieval (warhammer), the future (40k), but i haven't found a fantasy setting for WW1 or WW2 era aside from Quar. So I ask you, my dear dakkanauts, is there a setting/ruleset for the Great War times that includes traditional fantasy characters?

Argh! My brain hurts! There was some game I used to know that had what your'e describing but for the life of me I can't remember what it was... (or perhaps it was all in my head?!).

Bolt action has warewolves and things now? Maybe that was it.

Kind of funny that Shadowrun is now considered by some to be an alternate present. When it first came out (20+ years ago?) it was supposed to be an alternate future.

As to your question, Death in the Dark (by RAFM miniatures maybe?) had a race of dwarves that looked like ww1 germans. I don't know if the fluff was more ww1 or if it was just the look of the dwarves. I feel like there are others, but I can't recall.

Also, it's an earlier era, but if you're into fantasy in different historical eras, Flintloque/Slaughterloo are two games in the same fantasy napoleonic'ish setting.

Not WWI, but there's Flintloque, which is Napoleonic-era Black Powder Fantasy. I have some unpainted Ogres somewhere still. Maybe I should paint them for KoW?

As far as WWI, I'm not aware of any games, but Hasslefree has WWI Russian Dwarves, and WWI British Halflings. I believe Bob Olley has also had several runs of WWI dwarves in his "Scrunts" range, though I'm not sure what's discontinued or still in production as Bob tends to turn over his range pretty frequently.

Bolt Action has a few "holiday joke" figures that are WW2-pulp inspired, and on that same WW2 note, DUST, Tannhauser, Incursion and especially Secrets of the Third Reich all feature some fantasy/gothic horror elements (Zombies, Vampires, etc - probably more I'm not aware of) and are actually games. Though they're not an "orcs versus elves" kinda thing.

edit -
Wow. We must have both been typing about Flintloque at the exact same time before I went off to look at Hasslefree's mini range.

Death in the Dark, eh? And yeah, Flintloque is a little too old for that.

Too old for what? You mean set before WWI?

Honestly, I'd just find a decent WWI ruleset and play with that and any figures you like. Tweak the stats a little if you must for orcs/ogres/elves/etc, but I imagine that a .303 round will do just as much damage to an Orc as it does to a person (40k Orks T4 notwithstanding).

I think a DIY approach is probably best. It's really no different than wargamers have always done for more obscure periods. Find a period you like, acquire the appropriate figures and locate a set of rules that either does what you want or can be modified as necessary.

The rules, background and figs in one package is really a luxury most counted on by folks coming from popular level sci-fi gaming. There are many ww1 rulesets that could be used, but here's a fellow that actually wrote a ww1 fantasy rulest.

I just googled "WW1 fantasy wargame rules"

For ww2, I'd just take something like Bolt Action and modify if necessary, though I can't off hand think of any ww2 fantasy-race figures .

You mean "Weird Wars"? Secrets of the Third Reich, Dust Tactics, etc? Lead Adventure has an entire board dedicated to it. Of course the threads there range from simple alternative history with laser (...simple?) to more of your fantasy stuff, you just need to have a rifle about.

I think what the OP is asking for is different than Weird Wars. Wierd Wars tends to deal mostly with humans, alternate tech and the occult added to the world wars. On the other hand there really is a gap with not much for a fantasy races and WW2 mashup.

You are correct. I was thinking WW2 tech with fantasy races. Like This Quar's War but with dwarves and elves and stuff.

Thanks for the input gang!
