Pretty self-explanatory. I am a newcomer to 40k forums but I know 1d4chan for a while. I read an article about Warseer on this website the other day and the author was quite pissed off about this community.

I'd like to find out why so much hate about them (where I've never been a single time)?

Yes you're right, I'll definitly compile and analyze the one hundred thousands threads related to 40k to find out.

Freaking genius.

I think it just comes down to a few things:

1) Places on the Net are all different, for the most part.

2) People get upset over just about..anything?

As far as Warseer goes, I've never had any problem with the place!

Just remember that Rule #1 applies at all times here - even if people aren't registered here as users.

*Portent.

Also, FWIW all vbulletin based forums do have a "first unread". It's the little circle with the two down pointing arrows on it to the left of the thread title.

While Wamp's e-mag Portal did get featured the front page a couple Warseer's previous was actually "Portent".

If you want to start a conversation about something someone said, then you need to link to that post. Otherwise, you're just starting fires.
Further, it's generaly best for one forum not to complain too much about another. It almost never goes well, and just makes bad blood.

All this to say, Guardsmanwaffle was right. If you want to find out what's wrong with another forum, go look at it for yourself or search the blogosphere. If there's something amiss, then google will find it for you fast without bringing out controversy at another forum.

I personally find the atmosphere on DakkaDakka to be more to my liking than Warseer, and I stopped checking Warseer more than a year ago maybe. The forums have seen a declining membership too, although that could just be my impression as opposed to an objective fact.

I think Dakka is very good at promoting reasonably constructive discussion, and that is an important point for me.

Dakka is also much larger than Warseer, and I have found that news on DakkaDakka is pretty darn quick and reliable, which means that you can get your breaking news on Dakka without having to frequent other sites just for the purposes of getting the latest gaming news.

In fact, DakkaDakka is big enough that (in my opinion at least) you can peruse Dakka and have a pretty good thumb on the pulse of the table top wargaming community, at least in broad strokes, without having to spend a lot of time bouncing around a ton of different sites.

Additionally, the Warseer owner/admins/mods are a little too...gunshy...I guess I'll say, about GW-related issues.

Consequently I find the moderating to be a little heavy-handed on Warseer.

Warseer has simply gotten a whole lot slower than it used to be, it peaked around ~2010 and has been getting slower and smaller since then. I'm not quite sure why. It still seems to be one of the more active "leak/information" locations however.

Some people seem to have had issues with moderation over there, it can be a little uptight on wanting certain topics to remain in certain places, but aside from that I've never seen any moderation action there that I thought was unreasonable.

I also post regularly there. It boils down to they have a lot of pro-GW, GW can do no wrong types and even some of the moderators there basically bend over backwards for GW; I think with some rumors and leaks Warseer will remove it because they're so afraid GW will come after them, and they remove things like that petition that was going around because it was painting GW out as the bad guy. Or being quick to close threads that talk about something that might be related to another thread but is trying to discuss something different.

I've never really spent any time on warseer, maybe just the occasional glance to see what the hobby section had for Guard stuff, but I've found that Dakka has one of the better forum layouts with nice and easy to use functions, like the ever useful first unread button.

I have no issues with the mods here despite receiving my fair share of warnings and/or bans, and Dakka is quite diverse in both viewpoints and hobby scope.

It'll be interesting to see how the forum develops with a few members of the mod team/ownership now releasing their own wargame and studio.

Warseer has great tactics threads and great painting threads. However thier general discussion and news and rumoured are overly moderated and heavy handed. I stopped visiting them with any regularity almost a year ago. Although I use to love looking at some of the army painting threads to get ideas.

I asked a question when I first started if they had a site like War Machine has Battle College to get an overview of the armies. Mod told me basically to gak myself and buy the Codexs

I joined there and here the same day when I first started looking into 40K as a player rather than a painter. I think my account there has a mighty four posts, two of which were intro based.

The community just felt less accessible and a little bit like something you had to learn to use before posting - I'm all for respecting a conversational venue... But in my mind, good conversations don't require an instruction manual, and a shoe up the arse when you can't find the unspoken goalposts. Just good people taking part.

Some folk match up better with some sites, some don't. No 'hate' from me.

I used to post on Warseer a fair bit. It's good enough, but I prefer the atmosphere on Dakka (which tends to be a bit more relaxed), and that this site has expanded to follow the trends of the industry. Believe Warseer just had an 'other games' section when you scroll about half a mile down the page, whereas this site has full historical sections, it's own Infinity and other game sections (board & misc amongst others). Gallery is much better here, too, as well as the general layout and aspect of the site.

My point here was not to start a war between forums. I just wanted to know Dakkanauts opinions on this forum, as they are often constructive and well argumented. I stalked stuff about Warseer all over the Internet and I wanted to confront my findings with you guys & girls. In social science, it's always better to meet people and get the information from them than stockpiling sparse writings on a given topic !

Moreover, plenty of people are asking "go find by yourself" questions on this forum and I though mine was worth the shot. For these reasons, I did not understand very well why the first response I got was so rude. But whatever.

Thanks to your answers, I can have now a better snapshot of Warseer and that was my aim at the very beginning.

I think it's the same with any kind of forum. Certain ones have certain leanings it's true here you can go a bit of tangent and nobody bats an eye unless it lasts too long.

In warseer the mods are very harsh and well it's not the same as it was. I left for a bit went back but again certain individuals are trying to direct the forum in a certain way this happens on most forums, it went very serious very fast.

There tends to be a rise in an ideology of this isn't fair to x y or z.

It's happening to most niche places.

To answer your question. Nothing is really wrong with it, it just evolves just like every place reacting to new people.

Like all things online and offline, we just divide ourselves into "opposing groups" and draw our territorial lines due to the illusion of asymmetric insight / naive realism. The boundaries online are simply more evident, and consequently more obvious. In truth, we probably share more values and empathy with each other, each group and even the diabolical GW then we think we do.

Heh. I was banned by a certain mod just because, as far as I can see, he took a dislike to me and my GW views.

And I still get automated 'happy birthday' emails from there.

Pacific wrote:Believe Warseer just had an 'other games' section when you scroll about half a mile down the page, whereas this site has full historical sections, it's own Infinity and other game sections (board & misc amongst others).

To be fair, Warseer had a bit more than that; and although I know Dakka is primarily a GW-focused site, I don't know if it's a huge improvement, especially when you still have to scroll half a mile past about a dozen 40K and WHFB boards. (including 'proposed rules' and 'tactics')

Great endorsement of a discussion forum, then.

Try being banned for spurious reasons, then be so lofty and impartial about it.

In truth, we probably share more values and empathy with each other... than we think we do.

Not after all the GW complainers have been shoved out.

Warseer is a little easier to have a GW related conversation I think, simply because a conversation doesn't degenerate into anti-GW back slapping, and the resultant reaction to that. Less people on there have had their hobby hearts broken I think.

But for other games or a more varied chat, it's not quite as good, simply value there isn't the member count or the more diverse set of opinions

That's weird to see such differences between two very similar forums. I would like to know which kind of people are attending Warseer, perhaps it is exactly the same as Dakka but they are overshadowed by a few harsh moderators/loud and despising people. I don't say Dakka has zero members like this bw.
