Hey folks, ive been back in "The Hobby" for a few months now and decided to take a short break from painting up my Space Marine army to get a Malifaux crew up and running. The idea being that i can get something table ready and playable quickly while i paint my 40k army, i have in my infinite wisdom chosen the most hordtastic Malifaux crew available (Gremlins!) which kind of defeats this purpose . It is proving a very pleasant change from endless dudes in black armor (go Raven Guard!) even if the miniatures themselves were maddening to assemble, one had a separate elbow ffs!!

Heres my initial purchase for what was supposed to be a small, cheap game system (i may have gotten a little over excited!)...

I should have taken some pictures of assembly but forgot due to being driven slowly insane, at one point i was crawling around the floor in my own filth almost in tears looking for that god damn elbow! I did take some pics of the first batch just after undercoating and then pinned to cork ready to paint...

I have singled out one Gremlin to be my tester, i am very inexperienced still and needed to try out a few things like the denim pants. Here he is with the base colors down and tidy...

I had been wondering how to get a "Swamp" base and decided to use Ronseal mixed with sand to create a mud effect then stick a piece of twig i found on there, so far so good...

Heres the lil bugger finished and waiting to be based...

And finally the finished article, i must say i am rather pleased with the result! The hat could be a lot better imo but the rest worked out way better than my expectations, particularly the base and the denim...

Thanks for you attention, i will be all about the gremlins for a while so expect some updates but will eventually start to jump between these and my Marine's. I welcome any suggestions, comments or constructive criticism for either project!

He looks really cool, your colour scheme looks excellent, this blog is going to be great to follow

I know what you mean about assembling the minis I've just finished two crews and had similar experiences looking under the table cursing some bit that popped off the sprue.

Love it! I like the relief from the almost depressing grimdarkness that permeates 40k. The hat is an eye catcher, and it's bright enough to almost not take him too seriously... until he's up in your grill. The pose just reinforces that. Altogether looks like a very fun mini.

GiraffeX. Thanks, im somewhat of a slow painter but updates will come. The assembly of these is insane, one dudes face is in 3 parts... 3 PARTS! The finished miniatures are great tho so its worth the insanity, beggars belief what the designers were thinking tho.

MCRobot. Yeh i love me some Grimdark as much as the next guy but its nice to have something colorful and fun sometimes too. Thats why i ultimately went for Malifaux after oooming and aahhing between it and Infinity for a while, both seem good games but Malifaux just seems to have more personality.

The hat isnt bad and its the right color but i should have started darker, its hard to see any of the shading and kinda looks a bit flat and one tone until you get right close. Still i think your right, the overall "look" works and im really satisfied with the result.

Gremlin no2's basecoat is done, i may have made a mistake trying to re-hydrate the previous paint for the green base. It came out to thick and has obscured some fine detail like the mouth :(. Its still just visible when you look very close at mini so hopefully can salvage it as i layer up.

Picked this guy because i wanted to test out the color scheme for hat/coat im going to use on the king Gremlin "Sommer Tooth Jones".

Well thats two down and about thirty more to go! A bit unsure of the hat again, black is such a tricky thing to get right. There is also a tiny issue from the modelling that's hard to see but the rope from the gun doesn't quite connect up to the rope on his body by a couple of MM, its very difficult to notice but drives me a bit crazy :(

Here he is just before waiting for his base...

And a few of the final article!..

Managed to pick up some rare OOP ones i had been trying to get hold of for weeks now so even more to paint!

Gonna pick up a Pigapult and then stop there for a while since the "little" Gremlin force is starting to look like an army!

And here they are, all done and varnished...

Next up is 'Ol Somer Tooth Jones the Bayou Boss!, love this old Metal version was well worth paying bit extra to get it...

I love these little critters. Super clean painting style and the toadstools are a great touch! I might try and make something similar for my night goblins :-) inspirational stuff!

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Thanks for the kind words folks

FearPeteySodes, these are Gremlins from a game called Malifaux (Made by Wyrd Miniatures) its a really good skirmish sized game with pretty interesting fluff, its main selling point and what really makes it stand out is that you use a deck of cards instead of dice to appease the RNG Gods. They really play into this with the rules and it gives it a strange feeling of being half card game half skirmish game, its really good fun and worth a look. How many men you will have on the table varies from faction to faction but an average game would prolly be something along the lines of 8-12, your expected to have a few more than that if you want to do well tho. You select your "Crew" after various random objectives have been selected and the board is set up so kinda ment to have a decent selection to draw from as is no single build that can do everything, even so the cost to entry is tiny when compared to something like Warhammer.

Bottle, thanks a lot was worried how the mushrooms would turn out but pretty happy with them in the end tho mebe a bit to big in hindsight. They are "Bayou Gremlins" and are supposed to have a sort of hillbilly aesthetic so im trying to make the bases look kind of like a funky swamp, lovin your Necromunda gangs btw

Managed to get Somer Teeth Jones finished of, tomorrow im gonna figure out how im gonna base him (still not 100% sure, stupid legs wider than base!) then throw on some varnish and my crew will have its Boss!

Here ive just done the fleshy parts...

Bit more progress, mostly the coat...

Almost there...

And here's a few of the finished article...

Like i said, tomorrow is all about basing him then ill select another 5-6 of the minis to assemble and prepare for painting.

Whats your technique for leather? Its really great! I can't seem to find a technique i like. I seem to flux between blending too much and it looks unnatural or washing that makes it too dirty.

Yours have great color but are believably worn.

Not really a special technique just layering same as the rest, i guess the initial color choices are what makes it work. I tend to have about 5-6 layers made out of 3 starting colors. I pick a dark base in the case of his coat (im assuming its the coat your referring to) i used Vellejo German Cam Med Brown (145) then for next few layers mixed in progressively more Vellejo Tan Yellow (122) and then for the last really bright layers started adding Vellejo Game Bonewhite to the mix.

This is broadly how i do everything, choose three shades getting progressively brighter then start with dark and mix it lighter for each layer. I try to avoid inks and washes as much as possible cause it can become a crutch and can stop the mini from really "popping" by dulling it all down just start dark and layer up.

Managed to finish of Somer Teeth Jones, been a bit delayed by various things past couple of days but gonna get stuck back in next couple of weeks as really want a playable sized force sorted out ASAP!

Heres a few pics of the base in production for anyone that's interested...

And the Bayou Boss himself finally finished, and i managed to figure out some of the settings on my phon/camera and take better pictures! Only took me 2 years to get to grips with it yay me!

And a couple of nice family portraits of the lil buggers ive managed to finish so far...

Next gonna get the rest of the Bayou Boss's box painted and try my hand at a few Piglets.

Undercoated and ready to go!..

Welp, i promised some bacon so here ya go! Finished the 3 Piglets for my crew and pretty happy with the results.

Did a test piggy first which had a different base color to the other two...

The other two piggy's with base color down, i tried to get a bit more fancy with these and ultimately it backfired as i think the first Pig came out a lot better...

Piglets all done and getting started on the bases...

And finally a few of the finished product!..

Overall im pretty pleased with them, just annoyed at myself for changing the colors slightly after the first one as in hindsight he was just right and the other two have come out just a little bit to red imo. Will get onto Lenny next then the two Skeeters...

Been a bit of a slacker past week or so but got back into ma painting and got one of my Skeeters finished, part of why i took so long is just couldn't decide how i was going to actually paint him. Was convinced all the way through would turn out rubbish but was pleasantly surprised with the end result. I didn't take many in production photos this time cause i was being a bit of a soppy git convinced he was a pile of crap , but heres a few of him right before basing...

And some of the finished article varnished and based, he could have been better i made a huge mistake fully assembling them before painting which i don't normally do but was worried about how fiddly they are. This made the wasp stripes in particular very hard and im not amazingly overjoyed about the wings but cant think how i should paint them tbh, trying to go for a sorta translucent effect so mixed some metallic's into some grays and drybrushed and inked with some sepia ink to help give definition...

Will get started on his twin tommorow then back to painting the rest of my gremlin horde, soon will be able to actually start playing the game!
