‘Ello, Dakka!

I've been painting orks for a bit, and thought maybe it was time to start up a little blog to document my progress. Hopefully, they’ll be some way to employ time-lapse photography or something, as I do have a glacial pace when it comes to getting models covered with a bit of color. I'd also like to use this space to explore and share the many wonderful modeling-related contraptions and epiphanies I've stumbled over while exploring this engaging hobby.

I thought I’d start this blog off with the conversion I am currently working on - my Painboy.

He’s…ahem…wheelie cool.

He's also not quite finished, though I rarely ever feel that any of them are, no matter how much time or paint I apply.

Like a gym membership, I initially tackle every ork with zeal, vigor and the very best of intentions. And then, suddenly, I don’t.

It gets tossed into some shameful repository filled with The Gym Cards of New Years’ Past and all the other incriminating evidence of my perfunctory nature.

Unfortunately for you, while I was painting this particular Painboy, a peculiar melody bombarded me - much like a brain fever - until this theme song took full form.

It will be up to you to decide which is shakier – my painting hand or my lyrical sense.

Bits used on the conversion:

CyberHead – SpellCrow
Nob Biker and body – Forge World
Rivets – Zinge Industries
Shootas – Ork Boyz box
Bionork arm – GW Painboy
Base gravel – Gale Force 9
Wires – RadioShack
Etched brass - Forge World
Syringe – Old Grex airbrush needle
Syringe mount – FW Elysian Tauros Venator

His theme song [I am so sorry and may the omnissiah have mercy on my wretched soul]:

Spoiler:

Ridin’ Urty by Scarmedicalcare
Sung to the tune of Ridin’ Dirty

They see me rollin’
The waaagh Is growin’
Because they knowin'
This boy is ridin' urty
This boy is ridin urty
FNP 'cause I'm ridin' urty
FNP 'cause I'm ridin' urty

When my boyz attack
The 'crons all fall back
To the Radio Shack
‘Cause they know the boyz and me
Gonna assault their batteries.

When they see my needles bared
Every beakie ruins his underwear
Hidin' behind dad's golden chair
‘cause I give ‘em all free medi-scare.

And as soon as the blue gits eye this
Their battlesuits all have a crisis
Want no part of my medical devices
‘cause my dead-side manner ain’t the nicest.

I'm two-wheelin'
No pain we're feeling
'Cause this boy is ridin' urty
'Cause this boy is ridin urty
FNP 'cause I'm ridin' urty
FNP 'cause I'm ridin' urty

It’s a Code Green
Ridin’ on my red machine
FNP 'cause I'm ridin' urty
FNP 'cause I'm ridin' urty

The pointy-ears just surrendered
‘Cause I got their Farseer
Smeared on my fender
Gonna admit ‘em all
Into my trauma center
It’ll be an affair to dismember.

Bend ova, Inquisition
Drop trousers and assume position
It’s time to meet your new physician
Now, the size of my syringe
Might make you quiver and cringe
But we have to stabilize your condition.

Them bugs think they’re so ferocious
Until they hear my diagnosis:
Twin-Linked shoota - double dosage!
Watch ‘em scurry just like roaches.

There’s no second opinion
The Dokta of Dakka is in
Notify all next-of-kin
It’s time to take your medicine.

To the Imperium
I am heretical
Ain’t got no license
(Driver’s or Medical)
They tryin’ to catch me ridin’ urty
Tryin’ to catch me ridin’ urty

Painboy is ridin' urty
Painboy is ridin' urty

And, finally, the images:

It's always nice to see a fellow Ork painter display his work. This is dakkadakka after all!

The Painboy conversion looks nice and natural. I like it. My only criticism is that the shootas seem a bit small for such a big model. I almost hate to even say it because you know what's coming... Needs more dakka!!

Thank you for the encouragement! I struggled between adding more dakka versus giving his monster cybork arm proper, realistic clearance on that side of the bike, and I suspect I chose wrongly.

Orks don’t give one boot to the eye about feasibility – that painboy would happily cruise along - listing to one side - with a bundle of gun muzzles thick enough to blast another toe off every time he fired it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

“Screw it all the way over, reach through the handlebars to raise the headlight beam, the needle leans down on a hundred, and wind-burned eyeballs strain to see down the centerline, trying to provide a margin for the reflexes.

But with the throttle screwed on there is only the barest margin, and no room at all for mistakes. It has to be done right ... and that's when the strange music starts, when you stretch your luck so far that fear becomes exhilaration and vibrates along your arms. You can barely see at a hundred; the tears blow back so fast that they vaporize before they get to your ears. The only sounds are wind and a dull roar floating back from the mufflers.”

-Hunter S Thompson

The Painboy’s Warbikers

Bits used:

Amazing head swaps from the holy trinity: Kromlech, Maxmini and Spellcrow.
Close Combat Arms from Kromlech’s ‘Ard Boyz

Spoiler:

These are also unfinished. I intend to hide those awful tire seams with some mud/filth/dirt weathering, but I am unskilled in their application and fear I will forever mar the models. So I am procrastinating!

"Our drive shaft is cracked. Our lascannons destroyed. The bolter is out of ammo, we're almost of of prometheum and we're leaking oil. Communications are down and we have been separated from the main tank column. Only the short-range functions of the auspex are working, and they are indicating the mob of orks that have harried us with an unceasing cascade of high explosives for the last hour has not just closed the distance, but continues to swell with reinforcements."

"Then what could possibly be the good news?"

"Though the ork mob has halved the engagement range as well as doubled in size, firepower and fervor, their aim is no better. The more wolves fighting over the kill, the more likely the rabbit escapes. "

The long weekend, as well as my giddiness over finally starting this blog, has generously awarded me extra time for my hobby.

I took a break from the bikes and went back something familiar to all ork players - painting infantry.

While I have a set of GW Tankbustas, I am not inspired. They are metal, and [gasp] I don't like metal. Oddly, I am not a fan of the aesthetics, either. Not the GW ones or the Kromlech bodies. The exception is the Kromlech backpacks and rokkit designs, so I did some kitbashin'.. Man, they are great designs and exceptional casts. Here's a preview:

Spoiler:

Still have a few layers to slap on these gits, but I think the backacks are going to be the highlight of the models.

Going to try and get these done tomorrow, so I hope I didn't jinx myself.

Ordos Xenos Inquisition Article of Portent #39R56Y. Threat Level: Intermediate. Discovery suggests orks may be establishing rudimentary training centers.

Spoiler:

These guys still need a little cleanup, and their bases need the little tufts of grass I have picked out for them, but I wanted to have a little update here before the long weekend's end.

Like I mentioned, the standard GW Tankbusta models and I are never going to entwine hands and look into each other's eyes during a long walk down a beach of sugar white sand, so these conversion models will just have to do. I think they turned out well. I'll show you the existing Tankbusta unit they are joining during some upcoming update.

Bits used:

Kromlech backpacks & rokkits
Ork Fita Bommer bomms
Spellcrow Gasmask heads

If you are serious about painting, at some point you might have to make a stand. Hopefully not a last one like Custer, Leonidas or Schwarzenegger, but a literal one - something to hold your models while you paint them.

For me, I made and bought several before finding a favorite.

I am going to compare them for you.

Fourth Place

Handheld jeweler’s vise
Price Paid: $13 and some aching biceps and delts.

My review
Spoiler:

I was duped again by the internet’s ceaseless knavery and my dangerous attraction to things mechanical. Look at the form! The many shiny bits and cranks!

Unfortunately, the picture does not successfully convey that it weighs almost as much as Thunder Hammer and my atrophied arms were just as graceful using it as they would be wielding Foehammer. On the bright side, it might be the secret key to integrating fitness into your hobby.

Work your guns while painting those guns!

Get a six pack while weathering your kans!

Do your squats while you layer your squats!

I’ll stop now.

Third Place

Large wool spool with magnetic sheeting glued to end.
Price Paid: $10 total, plus 15 minutes lost in the world that excitement forgot – the yarn store.

My review

Spoiler:

Everything I paint gets a magnet in the base so it can be firmly secured to the steel shelves inside my TableWar case. That is why - much like my first marriage – this plan seems like such a perfect match.

Unfortunately, also like my first marriage, the attraction wasn’t strong enough to keep things from falling apart.

Yeah, I could have slammed down a steel plate [on the miniature holder, not my first wife] in place of the magnetic sheet, but then you’d gain top-heavy weight causing them to wobble about and topple over at the slightest provocation like unsecured grots in a bommer’s bay.

Second Place

PK-Pro’s Miniature Holder 54mm V2.0
Price I paid: About $19 plus the cost of international shipping.

My review

Spoiler:

Now, this is more like it. It is well-made and is one of the few products I found that is specifically designed for the task. You can spin the arm around to access every nook and cranny without ever touching your model, and it keeps the miniature secure when in your hands and when waiting on your desk.

I’d own 5 of these if not for two concerns:

First, I am an ork player. I paint like Ford builds cars. I’d need to pay for 5 of them, which would be €90 in Euros, over $125 in USD or - in Games Workshop exchange rates – approximately 1 box of 5 infantry models that only come with 1 of the 5 guns you need for your list.

Second, I have used the traditional solution of ‘miniature-affixed-on-top-of-something’ for so long, that this design, while completely comfortable and likely better – seems foreign. I do force myself to exclusively use this for the big models like MegaNobz and bosses, and I am getting used to it.

WINNER OF THE FIRST MEKSHOP SHOWDOWN...

Upturned film canister with gobs of poster tack.
Price I paid: $5 for the poster tack and a withering barrage of dubious stares from the camera shop employees and patrons.

My review:

Spoiler:

I went into the store and asked if I could buy some film canisters.
Not only did they agree, they also refused to take any money for them.

I don’t need to tell you this hobby we enjoy is an expensive one. After months of handing over fistfuls of money to my plastic addiction, I was reeling with the excitement of finally receiving something for free, even if it was only indirectly hobby-related.

They must have seen the twinkle of giddy delight in my eye, because I could tell the gent handing over the bag of free canisters immediately began rifling through his memories of every Cops episode he ever watched in order to recall how I was going to use these film canisters to make and smoke crystal meth.

Like my secret crystal meth addiction, I'll be keeping these forever. They work out nicely. Pro-Tip: Glue a coin to the inside of each lid for added stability at the cost of some weight.

It comes from the east, curling like an oily surf over distant dunes. A careening line of ramshackle, red trukks belching black exhaust into the desert’s blue - the monstrous creatures in them also belching testimony to primitive gods.

The earth shudders as our batteries unleash a thunderous volley. The shells scream across the battlefield to prove our aim true.

Up on the looming drifts and all along the orks’ astonishingly long and ragged line, dozens of machines rupture into orange fireballs. They lurch into the air, spitting shrapnel and licking fiery tongues across the sides of adjacent trukks.

But still they come.

A second volley again sets the raging column alight. More orks and their machines explode. Death’s fangs ravenously rip souls from smoking twists of metal like dogs tearing meat from bone. The cheers in our throats die just as quickly, though, once it is obvious the greenskins are unphased by their losses.

Because still they come.

Unstruck trukks and bikes heedlessly dance over, through and around the still-writhing wrecks of their brethren, emerging through curtains of flame to reform their ranks. They are now close enough to give us the full effect of their maddening spectacle.

Behemoth machines bounce off the dunes and each other as they approach ever closer, while brimming transports leave trails of spilt passengers and cargo in their sandy wakes. Over-eager riders barely in control of their bikes send half-hearted salvos of automatic fire whispering overhead. Squadrons of deff koptas corkscrew around columns of smoke as their machines groan, warp and plunge under aerobatic strain. Buggies fan waves of sand from their tires into the eyes of rivals as they aggressively jockey to be the first to hit our defenses.

We are prepared to receive an army. The orks bring us a circus of violence.

Even as their eternal enemy, it is hard not to afford them some secret reverence. There is something underneath the slavering beast yelping maniacally, frantically clanking axe against chassis in an attempt to be heard above the thrum of their rough engines...there is a clear, savage honesty. From the smallest grot to the most hulking machine, each is an essence pure in muscle and motive.

But this is no time to be esoteric - it is time for melee. The orks spill out of their transports and wash over our battlements in waves of jubilant rage.

---------

These four trukks are the first vehicles I ever painted, and in consequence, they is no unifying palette or tone. Essentially, I used them to explore a world different than the numerous infantry I've covered in color. I also got a chance to play with some weathering oils from AK Interactive on some of the trukk beds as well as the frisk/decals from Anarchy Models for the licks of flame and patches of checks.

I am also establishing my bearing with my photography, so please excuse that work-in-progress, as well...

And my very first vehicle ever painted. I'll need to go back and apply matte varnish in the appropriate places. I think I like the bed the best of them all, but this is my least favorite trukk of the four...

I love your refreshingly bright scheme here! Obviously the conversions too but the vivid colors caught my eye first!

Thanks for the kind words. I know "cartoony" orks have diminished in popularity, but I am incorrigible.

There are numerous Ork empires collectors, each spreading across the galaxy like a noxious green stain, and no system neighborhood is entirely devoid of their touch. Some theorise that the Orks Ork Collectors do not use conventional methods of inter-stellar travel because they follow some deep-seated instinctual plan of galactic conquest, but the truth is far simpler. The greenskins greenskin lovers have not mastered the art of space travel settling down because they really do not care where they are going, only that they get to fight paint whatever is there when they arrive.

The missus and I relocated to a nearby town recently, and the sea of cardboard from the moving boxes and heaping piles of torn-off packing tape have finally shrunk themselves into manageable sizes.

Additionally, I’ve finally got my office/hobby room established the way I’ll probably keep it, at least for now.

Here’s the new hobby area:

Plus, an added boon – LOOTED MEK SHOP! My wife was unsure about how feasible her Ikea jewelry cabinet would fit in her arrangement of things, so the boys and I happily looted it to be used as a bits, tools and sprue storage.

I also improvised an LED arrangement on top to illuminate the drawers contents.

I think it is going to work out nicely, though it is already alarmingly close to full.

Will you look at that? More ork heads than Scout Sergeant Elias' trophy room wall:

whole sentence here. The tank isn't...

Glad?
Sad?
Mad?
Lonely!

Jet Girl: It isn't op... operational.

I am happy to report progress is being made on my first battlewagon.

I am excited to finally be using the airbrush for more than a simple primer. P

lus, the fades and gradients are pleasing to the eye and pleasing to learn…

Not much to show so far, pretty much just the base coats are on here, so everything is far too clean but it is early. I think it is coming out well..especially for a first-timer...

Going to need to edge the teeth, but the fade is much better than I can do with the bristled brush (stencils by Anarchy Models)....
