I like the ammunition look - if they make an airbrush to fire them = win

They look ridiculous. I'm not 10, I don't need gimmicks for paint. I'll be sticking with Vallejo.

Are they actually their own new paints, or just repackaged Vallejo?

If they want to do their own paints, more power to them, but I've been using Vallejo for years and don't see a need to switch.

They ended their relationship with Vallejo, hence why PSC and Vallejo released paint sets.

Im told these are Army Painter paints repackaged... which someone told me are Coat D'arms repacked! So who knows!

I see, that makes sense then. I'm sure the quality is probably fine and it makes sense for someone who is completely new to miniatures to be able to get everything at one place. I'm probably not really the target market for these though, since I already have quite a few paints and usually buy new colors in ones and twos rather than sets. But if these turn out to be awesome or something, I'd be willing to give it a try if I was starting a new army or something and needed the basic colors.

The new colors are lighter than the old Vallejo paints that they used to sell. BF has decided that since everyone is washing their figures now, that the pre-wash colors should be lighter, as the wash will darken everything up.

The new Colors of War book uses the new paints in its guides.

For those who are curious, or already have a full set of existing paints, there's a pdf on the website with some rough corolations between the new paints and existing Vallejo colors.

From the Developing the Colours of War article:

The development of the paint was a joint project between staff in both the UK and New Zealand studios, with plenty of support from Jonas and Bo at Kvasir Innovations, the people behind The Army Painter.

Kvasir Innovations is in Denmark according to this press release while Black Hat Miniatures says that Coat d'Arms is manufactured and packaged in the United Kingdom. This leads me to be fairly certain that they're separate paint lines from different companies.

Vallejo paints work fine for me and are available locally, so I can't see myself switching.

The old screw top bottles they switched to after the Coat d'Arms paints were supposedly shaped like a bolter shell.

I'm an adult, and I don't really care what the bottle looks like. All I care about is the quality of the paint inside the bottle and if it's a good value.

Gather the bullet shape was a case of 'why not' as in the volume they are buying the bottles it didn't add to the cost.

Can't see needing them as have plenty of paint already, but at least the names are not totally unrelated to what they are and you can get a hint at what they are for.

Shrug, if they ended the relationship with vallliiialijiooojio then they probably needed something else so why not indeed.

The idea of being lighter shades to cope with washing then end up about right is a good one though

I wonder why they ended their relationship with Vallejo ? Or did Vallejo end their relationship with BF ?

Vallejo are doing very well especially with Infinity taking off and the top painter using their paints

I think from reading the articles on the BF website some of it is to allow people to find the correct shade easier (Russian uniform for British tanks vs firefly free) and also to fill in some gaps (judging from the conversion chart)

I think the biggest advantage of the new bottle design will be how easy it is to recognise - and brand recognition always helps.

I'll continue using my Vallejo/p3/army painter/GW paints, as I don't want to change mid project - but if they're good enough and I need the colour in future I'll use them

So from the note that the shades are lighter due to expectation of being covered in a wash - is the new 'suggested' technique just basecoat/block in colours then a wash all over and done?

Seems like it- after all the AP method has become very popular for historical army painting as of recent.

Not exactly.

The new Colors of War book gives you basic guidelines that will let you do essentially that if you want to. But it also tries to give everyone an opportunity to do *something* to make their figures look a little better. Painting guidelines are divided up into tiers (marked by chevrons). The early, basic steps are the tier I steps, and are the steps you follow if you want the minimally acceptable historical appearence for your units. Those steps have one chevron. Additional steps with more chevrons give you suggestions on how to make your figures look better, if you're willing to spend the time.

And even the basic appearence guidelines aren't always just "coat and wash". For instance, the suggestions for tank tracks (which I used on my Bolt Action Chi-Ha a couple of weeks ago) involve painting the tracks brown to simulate dirt, and then dry brushing with a metalic color.
