A buddy and i wanted to get started in FOW. I wanted to play russian and he wanted to play brits. I really like tanks and mech stuff and he likes everything.

What do you need to start besides model? How is list building in FOW done?

thanks

If it's just you and your friend playing each other on a regular basis choose two sides that would be historically accurate against each other.

Your also going to need some terrain and a decent table to put in all on

This is hard to answer on a forum as it could take pages to explain.

First thing you need is the main rulebook. You can get the big hard backed one or one of the smaller books from the starter set.

For Russians the first thing you would want to do is pick up the "Red Bear revised" intel book. It gives you all the information on the different types of armies you can field and the stats.

For Brits there are several books out there with Brit armies. Just pick a theater that interests you and start from there.

Each book as the different units for list building and points. Most lists require a HQs and 2 combat platoons. From there you can add additional combat and support units until you get to your agreed upon points level. Most places I know of follow the recommended point values that BF publishes for the current tournament season which changes year to year.

Since your buddy wants to field Brits, it would probably be worth it to pick up the starter set. It contains roughly 750 points each for Germans and an allied army of British armor and US paratroopers. You also get a rulebook, V2 rocket, tokens, dice and some 2D terrain pieces to put down.

The current Open Fire set does not have a Flames of War rulebook. That being said, it may be in the OP's best interest to play Open Fire (Flames of War Lite) instead of Flames of War if he and his buddy don't plan on joining an established group and how much historical accuracy they want in their forces.
