Hi All,

I wanted to share a little idea I have been trying out.... I bought myself a Dust Tactics walker "Luther" and wanted to show one of the rocket launcher tubes firing!

Having a very small budget I wanted to try something simple and easy to do....

Any questions or comments please let me know and I will try my best to explain more if needed!

Firstly I used a small rocket I had spare in my bitzbox. I added some thin copper wire and cut and shaped it as desired to the tail of the rocket.

Next, use an everyday kitchen sponge and tear off a piece that is long and wide enough to sit around the copper wire. At this point I cut into the sponge and concealed the wire inside... small dab of superglue to hold the sponge in place....

Fiddly bit next, slowly start to use your fingers to pull and tear the sponge to the desired shape... remember to follow the curves of the wire and to add some dynamism, look to have the smoke trail thicker at the back of the rocked and then thinner back towards the launcher.... this stage should be done in very small parts... take your time to achieve the desired effect.

I used grey primer next.... leaving the sponge "unsealed" will give a nice smoke effect and keep a slightly see-through appearance.
Thin coats of black paint were added directly behind the rocket and worked thinner down towards the tail of the smoke to give a transition from black to grey.

Yellow added followed by orange and finally red was sponged lightly onto the piece. Adding more paint directly to the rear of the rocket and less towards the tail help with the effect....

that's it.... I hope that is of some help to people... as I said earlier.. if you need any help of if you need me to explain anything further please let me know!

cheers,

Nice tutorial, but it would better if you broke up the text so that it descibes what's going on in each picture, below the actual picture, instead of the wall of text on top.

Next time I work on my Orks I'm going to give this a try.

Hey all,

I know this was ages ago, but I did wonder if anyone tried it out... or had any examples?! Would be cool to see if anyone thought it was useful or not!

cheers,

Seems like a neat method for creating that smoke effect. Do you know if it would work if scaled down a bit and showing just the flame part, since that's what most miltary rockets look like when fired (the big plumes of smoke don't show up until they've been in flight for a while, at the moment of launch it;s all fire).

Looks good im definitely going to give this a try

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind.

Hi Mate, thanks for looking in! I am sure it would work for just the flame part as you say. The reason I added the smoke plume all the way back to the firing tube was to cover the wire support... but I suppose if you use a thin wire or something more transparent.... it may not be an issue...
