Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

At first I was a little disappointed that this wasn't a tie-in game for the new Bond film!

But these guys are actually pretty awesome! The sculpts look very nice and detailed, and well priced too!

My mate has some. He works in an army surplus store & can recognise different makes & models of the tactical gear like the webbing.
Also the metal is very hard so don't worry about the thin guns.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Beautiful miniatures, and well priced.

The game feels a little too close to home for me to feel entirely comfortable with playing it though. When the objective markers are civilians with bags over their heads on their knees, it just feels that little bit too real-world grim. Kind of like if I was playing a game with prisoners trying to escape from Japanese soldiers on the Bataan Death March, or Brenda Romero's concentration train game. It's probably a great game, but I'll most likely keep my atrocities to involving space bugs and genetic supersoldiers.

Points for realism though, and the above is just how I feel.

Spectre don't make figures that fit that description. :-/

We tend to use these figures to represent high value targets captured by Special Forces (who will cuff and bag them in reality). Civilian prisoners would have a bit more limited usage, other than counter terrorist operations like those in all the big popular computer franchises.

Noted in the description:
These two models represent hostages or captured personnel – who add another element to Spectre: Operations. Using the rules set you can now play hostage rescue missions, or your force can attempt to release their captured personnel!

Well they could be bringing out stuff like this.

Near future stuff's fine to me, though I tend to use my moderns for settings like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which are a slight step away from the real world. The difficulty is that most players prefer their fantasy, historical and sci-fi settings as opposed to a modern one.

Are there any comparison shots between those new balaclava guys and Empress Miniature's similar insurgent miniatures? I keep looking at Spectre's selection wanting to pick something up, but find it difficult to find anything which would strictly suit a European setting (all the welly boots...). It'll be interesting to see what other regions wind up being catered for beyond the Middle East and Africa, for instance Asia and South America don't tend to crop up much either (Empress PLA going up against Asian terrorist organisations could be cool).

Been watching you gents for a while. Big question is, when's the technical out as I missed the kickstarter?

Any thoughts or plans to bring out little bird helos for inserts, that's one chopper that seems rare at 28mm scale.

Oh, excellent release. I have a sudden inkling to get a few of these and stage a "Clear and Present Danger" style motorcade ambush. American Agents V Local Insurgants. RPG's, Blacked out 4x4's and CIA Operatives

The prices seem a lot more reasonable than I remember Specter miniatures being. The scenario models are fantastic! The vehicles.. eh.. I'll settle for some Diecast cars for less than $10 there :/
It's funny, I was looking at these and remembering someone else makes the A-team (Crooked Dice maybe?). You could pretty easily scenario out some of the more entertaining scenes from the movie.

Sort of a random question - I've noticed Hawk Wargame's small vehicles are called "technicals" as well... is that like a Queen's English term for a jeep / offroad vehicle or something?

Thanks

Good old wackipædia. Shortened form of Technical Conversion I believe. They were called that in C&C Generals.

It's a term for some sort of off road (converted civilian) vehicle with a big machine gun or similar mounted on the back originally (although I've seen it used for quad bikes too more recently when some reporters are talking about special forces equipment)

I love these minis and would really enjoy doing some kind of spy/action movie stuff... Anyone know some good rule sets for these minis?

Technical is shorthand for slapping a gun that is normally a crew-served weapon onto a vehicle that was intended for civilian use. Some of my Marine buddies have floated memes of donkey carts with various big guns... I think there were a few with bicycles and other silliness. There was a KS (I thought from Spectre) about Technicals with all sorts of weapon conversions.

I've been buying up a lot of 1:43-1:55 stuff for modern scenarios. I'm curious how these guys scale next to Empress stuff and those super cheap 1:48 Airfix modern kits (Quads, Warrior, Land Rovers, etc).

Just came here to post the new stuff... beaten to it!

We will also be releasing our rules Spectre:Operations very soon

Technical is a term coined from the 90's in Somalia. Local warlords were given 'Technical assistance', which lead to the mounting of heavy machine guns or AA guns onto the back of local pickups as a very cheap and effective mobile weapons platform.

It has since been used to describe any modified civilian vehicle that has been militarised in some way.

Got it, thanks guys. Term seems a bit of an oxymoron for a rather low tech solution is all

Had an email today to say that the 75th Rangers are now available. Look very cool, age of sigmar may be on hold for a little while now. Still haven't picked their seals up yet either.

First use I saw of the term 'technical' was from Somalia, used to describe the various gunned up civilian vehicles used by the clans. The AAR from the 'Day of the Rangers'/Blackhawk Down fight uses it,though I've seen reports from earlier which used it as well.

That is from the 'Day Of the Rangers' display at the Airborne and Special Ops Museum

They've also released MENA (Middle East and Northern Africa) civilians: http://www.spectreminiatures.com/collections/mena-civilians

These models represent civilians that may be encountered the Middle East and North Africa. They are usable for a variety of roles, from passers by, to informants, undercover agents and insurgents or 'dickers' - reporting on security force activity.

They are wearing a mixture of clothing appropriate for all roles and in realistic modern poses, these models can be used to add depth and realism to your wargames; especially in the upcoming Spectre: Operations rules where civilians play a role in the Spectre battlespace, just as they do in the real world.
