I just been looking at the new Warhammer reboot, Age of Sigmar, and reading up on the story behind it, and I have to say that I'm impressed.
You really have to appreciate how generous Games Workshop is being (at least, comparatively) with what I assume will be an entirely new product line going forward.
First of all, they're offering 47 figures at a US$125 price point, and that's not all dorky infantry. There are some really impressive models in the set. But the real kicker is that all the rules for both the game and the miniatures, including the models from all past Warhammer armies, are free. That is something that, as far as I'm aware, the company has never done before, even before the massive price hikes of recent ages. And this seems to be where the industry as a whole is going: charge for the models and give the rules for free.
Is this the future of the company we can look forward to? Might we expect a similar reboot for 40k with a more "newb friendly" ruleset and better, cheaper models with free rules? Can we look forward to building our future armies without having to take out a second mortgage? I'm excited about it.
