Last time I played WM it was in the remix version of Mk 1. Now I'd like to play again and would be grateful for any advice in terms of possible purchases I'd need in order to catch up with the current edition. I'm thinking I'll need the Mk 2 BRB and probably updated faction cards. I'm not sure if there's any value in the army books or if they are vital. I'd be grateful for any insight please.

Hello and welcome back! Yes, you probably want the faction deck to update your units as well as the rule book. No, the faction books aren't necessary but they are also a way to get up to date stats and fluff. If you own a tablet of decent size you will probably want to look into War Room.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Is a good page to get onto if you have the facebooks. Really helpful for finding out what stores have decent turn outs in your area, what nights those turn outs are on, tournaments that are coming up and the like. Really worthwhile, even if sometimes the comment streams can get pretty, ahh, interesting.

As for what to buy, the poster above me covered it. War Room is fantastic, there are other apps which spring to mind which do a similar job but have other functions (number of models painted, battle results tracker, etc). But I just deleted it from my phone so I can't for the life of me remember...sorry.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Cygnar's been having a bad time. Khador gained some more real estate.
The science nerds that worship Cyris turn out to be a very militaristic cult with their own hidden armies.
Deneghra and Haley have gotten more powerful. The Butcher still butchers things.

But the game is more balanced (so I've heard) with more options. It's a great time to get back into warmachine. I'd get the faction books if you like the fluff.

Also, check out my history blog: Minimum Wage Historian, a fun place to check out history that often falls between the couch cushions.

Thank you everyone that's great. Time to dust off those Protectorate minis and read up on the newer enemy factions.

One of the things that might be most surprising for a returning Mk1 Protectorate player:

The Reckoner is now the Golden God-King of all Warjacks. All other Protectorate Warjacks kneel before it, in tears begging forgiveness for not living up to the Reckoner's expectations. The question isn't if you bring a Reckoner with a given caster, it's what caster you bring with your Reckoners.

Seriously though it's probably the piece you'll find most improved from the old days. It's insanely versatile with the best in-faction threat projection. It's point-for-point one of the best Warjacks in the game, and arguably the strongest non-character Warjacks in the game point-for-point. It appears in something like 70% of tournament lists and 90% of those that took at least one heavy. Double Reckoner lists are really common, and even the odd triple-reckoner list does well.

EDIT: Note. I'm probably underselling the Reckoner here. Seriously.

Also, we have a Paladin warcaster now.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Vanquisher is the other star warjack now. With Reckoner and Vanquisher and 2 vassals you're putting out a lot of heavy firepower and melee beatdown for a mere 20 points.

Cool thanks. When I last played it was Devouts that were the in thing. I'll have to check out the Paladin caster as well.

Devouts are still good, although defensive strike got heavily nerfed. You usually only take one for the shield guard and spell immunity for the caster.
