With the release of AOS, I feel I need to take a break from GW related products and start up a new hobby game. Some players at my local store feel the same and are looking at others as well. I am more interested in warmachine while they are looking at KoW and infinity. So to the point of this thread is I like to grow interest in warmachine at my flgs. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh the store is very 40k heavy.

Buy a couple of battle group boxes, paint them up, learn the rules and start doing small games with other interested players.

Once people see the game in action and people having fun with it the interest will grow (hopefully )

That was the way that we started in my neck of the woods.

That's a very open ended op. I mean, where do you want to go? What are you asking? What do you want to know about the game?

Sorry for the vagueness of the opening. I'm wanting to start a crygar army love their look and their fluff. But I don't want to start a game no one else will play. Phantomviper that was what I was thinking too or go half in with someone on the starter set.

See if there is a PG anywhere in your area. They are generally happy to come and run demo days, Journeyman leagues (starter) and other things to get interest going.

Oh and here is the pressganger finder. Not sure how up to date it is though.

Thanks looks like there are two in my state. I will have to talk to the shop keep and see if it would be ok first though.

How I got into it:

My buddy, both of us 40k players says "Hey, I been thinking about checking out warmachine, you should join me. The starter box is $35 on amazon. I picked up Cygnar and friend 2 picked up Khador"

$35? Wow, that's cheap, sure let's give it a shot. I'm now $450 deep into Cryx and recruiting our disenfranchised AoS players.

Figured we just start with the battle boxes and try to get more people interested in it. With how unpopular AOS is around my area right now more people maybe willing to try something new.

Just be aware that the rules in the battle box are the "Quick Start" rules and are by no means complete. The full rules are in Prime/Primal, the 2 player box sets and, the all in one army boxes.
So, if you look at the rules they work for the battle boxes but you'll eventually need a full rule book from one of the above.

If you get 4 or more folks together I would recommend running a Journeyman League. They start at 15 points and grow to 35. Points for the league are based on games played and painting. The only thing I would change is the scenarios are they are kinda weak.

Yeah, the game is really cheap to get started on. I've gotten multiple battle boxes and built them up to 35 points just to have other armies for people to try out.

It gets expensive once you get hooked and want to make 50 point lists for half of your faction's stable of warnouns.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Its still a hell of a lot cheaper than if you wanted to be able to run every competitive list for a faction in 40k. I started Ret a bit over a year ago now - I started with a 35pt Ravyn list and now own almost the entire faction, including duplicates of some units which can only be used properly in tier lists (3 units of Strike Force + UA, 2 units of Invictors + UA etc). I don't own Destors and Nayl and have no desire to buy them (because they are in contention for worst unit and worse solo in the game), I'm missing pVyros and Thyron, but have everything else. All up this cost me about the same as my last competitive 2000pt 40k army that I ran (Mechdar).

So I have settled in Crygar and I really like Caine and Stryker as casters but not sure on units, solos and jacks that would work well with them?

It can be expensive but certainly doesn't need to be.

I don't know many people who try to build separate lists for half of their factions warcasters/locks. Most people I know have 2-3 casters that they prefer to use the majority of the time. And many models can be used in all those lists. That will suffice for the vast majority of players who play for fun and maybe a local store tourney or two.

Most people build their collection continuously over time. A battle box is comparable in cost to dinner and a movie for one person. Something that is pretty reasonable to most people and if they don't like it they can probably resell it to recoup some of the costs. Like any other hobby or activity that costs money you need to budget appropriately. But it isn't too hard nor expensive to get a reasonable collection that allows you to play with your friends or at your local store. Especially if you focus on models that are on the less expensive side and look for deals and bargains on the internet. I've made decent 35 point lists for less than $150. One of the people I know who has the largest collection of Cygnar (or anything) that I know of is Agamemnon from the PP forums. He likes playing big, dual caster battle so has lots of everything. Yet he got to that point by budgeting himself a reasonable amount of money each month for his hobby.

There is nothing wrong with going one model/unit at a time. It is a very steady way to grow an army and add options. Of course some people just go all out with a new army (myself buying 186 points in one go), but thatis only iI was restarting Khador for the third time and already knew what I wanted and the different options I hadn't run before were... On a side note, two Max units of Iron Fang Uhlans, Vlad3, Drago, two Drakhun, Fenris and Markov aren't cheap. But most skew lists like that are not going to be cheap. They are just another way to play, but not necessary.

I do not think I could do anything that crazy in one go. I probably just have to do a model/unit at a time. Going beyond the Cygnar Battlebox what are some good directions to go with list building? I like Stryker and Caine I also like the look of the Gun Mages and Trenchers. But I have no idea what jacks work best with what.

On a side note is there anywhere to read up on fluff outside of the brb and faction books? Novels comics etc I mean. Just looks like a very rich world I like to get more info on.

They started up their own imprint fairly recently (Skull Island Expeditions), and there's some pretty good stuff in there. In particular, the novella on the Butcher and the one on Makeda are both excellent (the latter being by Larry Correia). I've heard good things about Into the Storm as well, and they've actually started releasing characters from that one (notably the Thamarite merc).

Gun mages are a great next step for cygnar. As for jacks I have seen Ol' Rowdy used a lot but I'm not too familiar, I see Stormwall a lot but I'm not sure you want to jump in with a colossal.

The first purchase of many after the battlebox is one of the units of gunmages. Black 13 are popular because they make your army exactly 15 points and are a relatively cheap unit. MSRP is about $17 I think. Otherwise the basic gunmages and officer are a very common unit that sees action in most Cygnar lists. And the Cavalry are also very good. Squire is also a given for all but a few Cygnar casters.

After that, I wouldn't really buy anything else until you decide upon a primary warcaster. The warcaster is the single most important item to determine what your list looks like. It is easiest to build a list top down, though you can start with a unit or solo and build up that way. It is more difficult, but far from impossible. Take a unit you like and then find out what caster turns it up to 11. Then go from there.

Anyways, once you figure out your warcaster it is much easier to get advice about what to buy in order to get a solid list for them.

After you have a solid list and some experience playing then you start adding other units, warcasters, solos, etc.

I like the Black 13, they are gorgeous models aswell as the gun mages. I have looked on battle college to see what warcasters work best with what units and what abilities they get the most benefit from. I really like the hunter and I think it and caine1 would be pretty good together.
