Hello, I hope someone can help with this. I've been offered a whole load of old GW figures, but the breakdown has been given under the old letter pricing structure, can anyone break it down for me?

The only thing I have is some old blisters with price tags. Maybe its a start. Couple of things, though, I'm sure prices rose during the alphabet labeling system, so its going to vary widely depending on the vintage of the models. Here are the ones I have

C $8 USD. Sm Scouts with Shotguns
D $12 USD. Sm Chaplain
G $14.99 USD. Captain Lysander

C $10 USD. WHFB High Elf Hero
E $9.99 USD. WHFB Luthor Huss

As you can see, the models I have vary, between 40k and WHFB, and the codes are wonky. I think my Luthor Huss (mounted) is a rather old blister/model.

Sorry its not as comprehensive as you're looking for.

It's easier to just convert them to new prices.

They changed them that much, that unless you know exactly what year it came from the letter representing the price could be anything.

They were all round numbers working up from A (the cheapest). They went through a few revisions, though - part of the point of the letter banding was to remove the need to re-sticker everything every time they had a price adjustment.

And obviously the actual price bands were different in each country...

Which was rather the point - when prices changed, they didn't have to do anything to the packages to update them.

Thanks for all the advice, perhaps a bit more info is needed as I didn't make myself clear properly.

I don't need to know the price value of each code, I need to know what each code represented as a purchse.

Codes C to G are individual figures. Q I think was the LOTR Balrog, But what are codes A, B, I, J, K, L, M, N, O?

Each code represented a price band, not a specific product. Every product worth the same retail price had the same letter, regardless of what it was.

Bit of a problem then, I've got to represent up what this offer is to a funding committee, who don't play wargames. 66% off the retail price, but they want a breakdown of what they're paying for....

Do you need a list of the costs, or what they represented in terms of figures?

So you're representing the funding committee, and someone walking in saying "Here's something I want to sell you folks, but I can't actually tell you what the price is"?

That's not a problem. That's when you say, "Please come back when you can ask for a monetary figure" using that good old fashioned straight forwardness.

There is also a question of what price you're looking for. Are you looking for the original retail price? That might be a little hard to come by.

If you're looking for the current market price for out of print models, I would suggest doing a little research on eBay and just average the selling price for the last several successful auctions. Some of the older models have gone up in value over the years and others are worth next to nothing.

If you're able to provide a listing of what you have, we might be able to communally come up with prices for you.

Also, you really only need to establish the original retail price for one of each letter. If you know someone who has access to old White Dwarf mags, the original sales price might be in those.

Not quite, I've been offered £2k of GW stock for £600. However those that control the funds that I'm asking for, have asked for a breakdown of the individual box codes, so I know from experience that Q is the old plastic ballot, price point I is either a Crisis suit or perhaps three bikers. I was just wondering what the old system was for banding the goods together, ie what did squads go under in comparison to a vehicle. Personally I want to buy the lot for myself, but the better half has vetoed that, so I go to the welfare committee for the cash to buy on the clubs behalf. But they've asked for info that I don't have to hand.

It's the terms of figures that I need as opposed to what they cost. I've already found that out.

Speak to Andy Horsfall, the citadel store supervisor and my old manager. He's been in the company 18 yrs, and will be the only one there who would know from experience. Buttery you seem to be at Whw frequently, we'll have to have a game sometime.

I'll try, but the downside of going on a Saturday is that I'm at the whim of whoever's chained to the till.
I've had such piss-poor timing with my games recently - Battle Brothers x 2 and the AoS launch.

I'm not sure you fully understand what is being said here.
Bracket A is worth £2. It could contain A small single miniature in blister, some static grass, a paint brush, a magazine, whatever.
Bracket G is worth £20. It could be a boxed plastic squad, a boxed metal dragon, a metal warmachine in blister, a metal five man large infantry squad, a compendium book, a paintset, a tank, whatever.

The bracket letters stayed the same each year but the price per bracket went up by 5-10% per year (Over 2 price hikes) and the bracket prices were displayed on the wall to save the staff having to re-label every item twice per year.
I cant remember how long the system was in place but it was at least 5 years, maybe 10, during which point some sets got moved between brackets others removed from sale, other packs were bundled together etc

If you have the list of what's on offer I'm sure we could break it down into....
A- 15 singles in blister, 2 Paint brushes.
G- 2 Boxed Dragon, 15 Boxed Plastic Squads, 5 Metal Warmachines in blister.
Or something like that?

If they, as non wargamers, want a list of models I'd just do a simple head count and go for these categories and the number in each.....

Infantry Singles-X
Infantry Blisters-X (80 models)
Large Infantry single-X
Boxed Infantry Kits-X (240 models)
Boxed Large Infantry Kits-X (140 models)
Vehicle Kits-X
Large Monster Kits-X
Terrain/Landscaping Kits-X
Misc-X

Or something like that.

Aye it'd be much simpler to have a list of the items and then to attach prices that way other than trying to work out the price codes. Saying that though that may be a tad complex if that £2000 of stock is all band As...

From my own recollection though they only used the letters for their blister backs. There may have have used them for the boxes behind the scenes, but I never seen any boxes with them IIRC. The boxes were always more than most of the blisters, with it only being the really expensive blisters that cost in the same price bracket. Maybe it was different in other countries though. Paint just had the prices shown on the shelves as well rather than having a letter.

Edit: also knowing when the models were from would help if you're looking for estimates. Are they all from the same period or does the packaging vary?

(but make sure people don't open all the paints at once just to have a 'fresh' one, they really dry up fast in those style of pots)

I got a load of small boxes like that once, was six packs of one colour of paint.

Yeah, but each box is a different colour, and the white boxes are the old foundation paints. Just as well as I've a lot of figs to get through.

Ps, I was serious about some of the stuff. The dark eldar, wood elves and beast men stuff is surplus to needs. If anyone wants them, PM me an offer. Swaps for LOTR stuff, especially figs that go with Rohan or Isengard will be seriously entertained.

They counted as different "Units", per say. Some were individual characters, some were champions, some were heavy support units, some were fast attack...... etc.etc.

Those codes do not matter, BTW. Unless your talking 1990's- 2000's pricings....

You are going to need a bigger boat....

Potentially interested in any or all of those, but write up a list of exactly what's there and let me know what you're asking for them via PM as per swap shop rules. Playing guesswork from photographs isn't realistic.
