Hey guys, I was wondering about the viability of the Strakhov alternate Battlegroup of:

Kommander Strakhov
Spriggan
Marauder

I think it looks pretty dang fun for a Journeyma League. Really gives a different taste of Khador, gives you two interesting Warjacks for Strakhov, and opens up the possibility of changing it up at Week 4 with Zerkova's Hunting Wolves. Just wondering what you guys think.

I love Strakhov and the jacks they gave him are great.
Spriggan in particular is very good for "overr(f)un" movement shenanigans, in fact it's the best non-character jack to run with him.
The marauder is pretty good for his points and "slam on demand" can be a gamechanger.

Yea, I was pretty shocked when I looked at the 2015 Journeyman League packet and saw some of the new Alternate Battlegroups. A lot of them look like a real blast to run. Shoot, I have always loved the Spriggan, and actually gives me a reason to try out the Maruader. I have never used it before.

The marauder is one of those pieces that really shines at low points or in Mangled Metal. Slams are much more effective at that level since you are likely taking a good 40%+ of your opponents army out of the fight for a round.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Cool! I really can't wait for our league to get started. I haven't done much in the way of slams, it shod be pretty fun. Do you have any good tactics or wisdom to share on slamming models?

Because Combo-smite can be used when you charge, you can effectively aim the slam.

So when you charge, ensure you end the movement with your charge target is between you and something else you want to slam it into. Like another jack or your opponent's warcaster. Also, Boost to hit. Don't want to make your one attack this turn go to waste.

Fun fact: As it will be your charge attack, the damage roll against the model you are slamming gets boosted. But if its also slammed into a wall or another model with the same base size or larger an additional die gets added too. for a total of 4D6 damage.

Oh my. 4D6 damage on a slam! Me like. I will have to work on getting some goofy charge lanes off and see what I can do with that.

Oh, but how would you go about building up during a Journeyman League with that.

A pow 20 slam too!
Well for the15 pts you'll likely want a koldun lord for free focus, the other 2 pts can be mechaniks since you''re kinda stuck on jack heavy or you can be cute with a field gun and sentry cuz the enemy is running jack heavy too and crit KD is funny on their turn, other than that there's a whole mess of solos to choose from, manhunter for just plain punch, IFP Kovnik for kinda the same and utility later, WM marksman for the support models the enemy will bring at this level (squires, vassals, enemy kolduns), Sylys cuz moar focus.
At 25 is when everyone should be getting their meatshields, winter guard with Joe are a good option here, as are IFP especially if you took the kovnik earlier, you could also go MoW shocktroopers but they are bad in journeyman leagues due to the jack heavy nature of it making their high armor less relevant, demo corps OTOH can decimate jacks and with Strakhov's feat from real far, another cute option is Nyss with Valachev but it'll have to be a small unit at this level, if you didn't take Sylys a war dog might be needed to round out the points as well.
At 35 and up the game opens up and you''ll have to figure out what to add according to personal playstyle.
But Strakhov does play particularly nice with: the Drakhun, Yuri, All sorts of Kayazy, Nyss with Valachev, Uhlans, The Great Bears and everything else that likes to charge in general.
That said do not discount having ranged support, widowmakers, rifle corps, and anything else you're comfortable with.

Yea, I am going to have to toy around with what I run with him. Whole bunch of things I want to try, I think that Kayazy and the Great Bears are going to be one of the first things I run with him though.

The great bears love stealth, because they are a bit fragile.

I'd also recommend Sylyss instead of a ward of occasionally, because Strakov has lots of things he wants to do with his focus and not enough to go around, a free upkeep is good work. You might miss kommandog barkovitch however.

Yea, I really want to try using Sylys. He looks way too fun to not use with Strakhov every now and than. I really want to try Kayazy with him as well, their mini feat and the additional charge range on feat turn should be pretty nasty.
