Not experienced with these guys at all just trying to make my first cheese list so here goes. It's a double CAD

HQ

2x Flyrants with TLDWBLW and electroshock grubs

Troops
2x ripper swarms

Fast attack

2x Harpy with stinger salvo

1x Hive Crone with stinger salo

Second half

HQ

2x Flyrant with TLDWBLW and electroshock

Troops

2x ripper swarms

Fast Attack

Harpy with stinger salvo

So this comes in at 1716 wondering what I should change and move around here and add. Venomthropes are not an option simply because who are they going to buff? They'll never keep up with my guys and since the rippers stay in reserve they'd end up being an easy first blood for someone, compared to the flying monsters

While all the fliers certainly increase your ability to max score against some, it also increases your chances of being maxed scored against. The old RPS conundrum.

I would go to the battle report section and look for Jy2's current Nid list. It's 5 flyrants, 4 mawlocs and some mucolids. The mawlocs fill the gaps of the flyrants well against the current meta.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

I was already thinking about removing one harpy and making it another flyrant with the extra points I had. I'll go check out that list Is the mawloc for scoring? I thought it couldn't score because it burrows again or something

It's 4 mawlocs and no, they are for killing MSUs and dealing with invisible Deathstars.

The Mawloc is for killing. The AP2 is what Flyrants lack, so it's for the tougher units or pains in the backside, or to kill a unit that snuck off to go score something important. It's the wild card.

And you NEED Venomthropes in this list. The trick to a Pentyrant, or any similar list as I understand it, is to protect them on Turn 1. You won't always go first and a similar level of cheese WILL kill atleast one or two flyers in an Alpha Strike. You need to be protected from that with Shrouding and hiding in a piece of terrain or two. Once the bugs are in the air, who cares what happens to the Venom. Let it die.

I faced down a very bike heavy Ravenwing detachment with this something like

Sammael on a bike
Ezekiel

Command squad with 5 grav guns, banner and apothecary Ezikeil and term libby go here in a drop pod

2 min black knights
1 black knight with apoth and champ 5/6 man Sammael goes here

3 grav units with combi

2 dark shrounds

2 land speeders

Nephilim jetfighter

I'm missing something I can't remember what but the whole army was 3+ save or better with rerollable 3+/2+ jinks.

I did very very well. What types of armies are going to really give me trouble? And does anyone know of a resource where I can see the mawloc used well. Our local guy I don't think employs it properly

Just read Jy2's battle reports! He's one of, if not the, best Nid player in the country.

Jy2's the most vocal on here, not sure about the rest. Mawlocs you need at least 2, if not 3 to minimize the times where they just miss. A bunch of lictors helps with that (which is delving into Lictorshame territory).

Honestly, I have had 0 success with Harpies. I think they're pretty bad. If you can use 'em and get success, more power to you. This list (and Jy2's pentyrant list) are going to struggle to control objectives, which is going to be a major hindrance in the list. The lictor/mawloc combo element helps a bit.

Sean Nayden's blog has some of his early Lictorshame bat reps: http://vectdoes.blogspot.com/

So the reason I did 4 additional flying monsters instead of more tyrants was to force my opponent to spread his fire.

I lost two ripper swarms all game. That was my reasoning and it worked but it could be wrong. I will definitely check that out

Yeah, FMC spam is definitely valid, being aware of the scoring drawback. I just really don't like Harpies, haha. Would prefer Crones, and even then probably only one or two. If you're taking that many, look into Skyblight - need 30 gargoyles, but that will help your ground presence a lot.

Taking bad units to distract from good units seems like shaky logic. FLyrants are good. Mawlocs are good (en masse). Lictors are good (en masse). Nids are one of the books that have a pretty narrow competitive build range in the meta. Nayden's lictor shame was great before Gladius; not sure it would work now (in general I mean; players like him could take SoB and keep a winning record).

Flyrants are the best unit in the codex because they can affect the game in all four phases. Protecting them early is an issue if you don't play in a meta where there's lots of BLoS terrain. Consider a bastion.

That's a very valid assessment. The Nid dex is extremely unbalanced in that Flyrants are very, very good, there are a handful of decent units given certain build, and then there's a large pile of crap.

Oh the spores are a troops choice? I am new to nids and have only run into that type of spore once or twice. That's how it can fit

Yeach, Mucolids are hilariously 15 point troops...

To the OP, I guess my advice is, don't reinvent the wheel. You've got some very highly ranked tournament players in Sean Nayden and Jim Yeh who have optimized their visions for Nids. Both their lists are floating around on the web between dakka and BoLS.

I have to go to work and can't read up on that list yet but just going through the codex and looking I can see the mawloc list is good. Very good. I will look into it more later

I made the list I played for my first nid game EVER in less than two minutes and won starting 130 points down, I 80 points all game and my opponent had maybe 750 left. I always thought they sucked but If I could bring such and unoptimized list against a pretty decent one and perform that well I can only imagine what 4 large AP 2 ignores cover blast would have made it like. Ouch

If you want to go "Flying Circus" take a look at SkyBlight, it will provive you with Objective secured Gargoyles, that can re-spawn.
