Subject: What version of 40K should I play?

I haven't really played 40k since 3rd edition. I've just been building the models and reading fluff. But I want to try a game.
I am going to put the old Battle for Maccragge set I have together. Or should I just get the latest Dark Vengeance?
So I have the rulebooks for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th edition. I am leaning towards 7th since that is the most current. Any thoughts?

You gotta have opponents to play, so I'd go with whatever your potential opponents are playing, which is most likely going to be 7th.

Poll sometime back showed 5th being the most popular version, followed by 4th, then 7th. So based on popular opinion of how good the versions were, those would be the three best choices. 7th has the advantage of being current and being actively updated. Many would argue that 4th and 5th were all around better rulesets though.
Here's the link to that thread. Gives some good incite to pluses and minuses of various editions: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/606652.page

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did. |

I would suggest 6th, 7th might be more recently and so still has the community eye on it but rivals even 3th in terms of broken stuff.

If you want to find new people, 7th is the way to go. It'll be easier to find what you're looking for, and while the game has changed a lot since 3rd, the bones underneath it all are the same. That being said, your Battle for Macragge minis are still perfectly usable - any Marine army will want Tactical Marines, and any Nid army will need some more bugs too.

7th is the most coherent (and I know, that's quite a feat for GW) ruleset in a long time. I feel they did a fairly good job on it.
I'm not keen on the standardisation of LoW in 40K (I'd rather play epic if I want to field titans!) but maelstrom can be a lot of fun (although sadly poorly balanced and very random!).

5th edition if you play an assault army.
6th edition if you play a shooty army, and dont like LOW, and only care about objectives at the end of the game.
7th edition if you play a shooty army, like LOW, and are interested in maybe just combining units with complete disregard to the FoC.

I feel like a lot of these are posts about peoples favorite edition.
The best advice has been learn what your local players are invested in, as stated earlier. No point going back to 5th ed. if everyone at your LGS is updated to 7th ed.

I agree you'd be best off to play with the latest edition of the rules set, as for what you should buy getting it, it'll depend on what you want to play.
I'd start by putting together what you have first, and deciding from there.
assuming you want to go with space marines dark vengence is a solid choice (and if you decide chaos is your thing that's a LOT of stuff as you can easily chaosfy the BoM marines and the dark angels)
taking a look see at the deathstorm boxed set, assuming you can find it, might also be a pretty good move, as it's blood angels vs 'nids. so it combined with battle of mcragge would be a good starting point for a blood angels AND a Tyranid army.

The current edition is always the better edition to play right now, whenever in time right now happens to be.

Well if you play an old edition do you use the most recent codex or the most recent codex that had come out for that edition?
Does this mean that some models cant be used? Like Wraithknights?

My son and I play 4th edition and use any codex we choose from editions 3 - 5. If there is a new model that has been released that is not represented in the codex your choosing to use we take the earliest rules that it can be found. Modify it to fit a more balanced point release and probably have to line item veto some aspects if they just dont work with the 4th edition rule set.
For example all flyers are demoted to fast skimmers. Things like the wraith knight and riptide are still monsterious creatures but have had points adjusted. Neither of us own any IK models so thats a non issue,
I tell ya though... its been great fun bringing out my 3.5 chaos Emperors Children army and my Codex Armeggeddon Ork Speed Freeks list again.

7th is Apoc-lite, yes. It favors formations, MSU, Maelstrom, and heavy use of terrain as balancing factors, yet it plays well from 200pts to well over 3000. Actual full on Apocalypse is better suited to much bigger games, say 3000 on the low side with no upper cap.
