Been having a hard time finding a sweet spot with my lists on my own. Starting to feel like a glutton for punishment trying to play guard. Any recommendations on some solid lists I can put together with this list of what I already own?

-5 leman Russ
-2 wyvern/hydras
-4 chimeras
-80 guardsmen
-2 vendetta/vultures
-land raider redeemer
-2 inquisitor & cotaez and kamarazkov
-4 crusaders
-6 death cult assassins
-ministorum priest
-commisar/yarrick
-creed + kell
-Primaris psyker
-1 imperial knight
-1 aegis defense line

Usually play 1850 and 2k lists. I play against Tyranids, orks, tau, SM, usually. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Okay. Don't rely on Russes until Age of Emprah.

That's about all I've got after playing IG for 2 years.

I've been noticing as strong as my Russes seem to be they never really do jack gak. Been playing around with more blob and meltavet lists lately to questionable success.

On review of the model count:

-The Knight is an auto-take
-Use Inquisitors for Spehss Majiks (I'm not well-versed in them)
-Use the Russes as Exterminators. Kit each with a Lascannon, hide behind the ADL.

Here's what I came up with for my game tomorrow against Tyranids. Would I be better off going with a more infantry heavy list rather than the steel host formation?

+++ Steel Host & Knight (1855pts) +++

++ Astra Militarum: Codex (2014) (Combined Arms Detachment) (1385pts) ++

+ HQ (350pts) +

Tank Commander (350pts)
··Command Punisher [Dozer Blade, Heavy Bolter, Tank Commander, Warlord]
··Executioner [2x Multi-meltas, Heavy Bolter]

+ Troops (320pts) +

Veterans (160pts) [Flak Armour for Squad, 6x Veteran w/ Lasgun, 3x Veteran w/ Meltagun]
··Chimera [Dozer Blade, Heavy Bolter, Multi-laser]
··Veteran Sergeant [Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol]

Veterans (160pts) [Flak Armour for Squad, 6x Veteran w/ Lasgun, 3x Veteran w/ Meltagun]
··Chimera [Dozer Blade, Heavy Bolter, Multi-laser]
··Veteran Sergeant [Close Combat Weapon, Laspistol]

+ Fast Attack (155pts) +

Vulture Gunship (FW) (155pts) [Twin-linked Punisher Cannons]

+ Heavy Support (560pts) +

Hydra Battery (70pts)
··Hydra [Heavy Bolter]

Leman Russ Squadron (425pts)
··Executioner [Heavy Bolter]
··Exterminator [Heavy Bolter]
··Punisher [Heavy Bolter]

Wyvern Battery (65pts)
··Wyvern [Heavy Bolter]

++ Imperial Knights: Codex (2015) (Unbound Army (Faction)) (470pts) ++

+ No Battle Role (Lords of War) (470pts) +

Knight Crusader (470pts) [ Rapid-fire Battle Cannon w/ Heavy Stubber, Meltagun, Twin Icarus Autocannon, Warlord/Lord Baron, Warlord/Lord Baron]

Or the more infantry heavy list?

Honestly? No idea. From personal experience LRBT's are made of paper when it counts (unless your opponent is playing with a 5E equivalent army, in which case; Cardboard)...
I'd hesitate to have 3 Russes in one squadron, especially when the punisher necessitates short-ranged engagements.

From your previous post, I suspected that Tyranids, Orks, and Space Marines were your usual opponents - hence the AV14 frontage. Didn't anticipate the Tau though. If you're looking for a "take all comers list", you're going to have a real tough time against such varied opponents. Each of those races can really bring something from a competitive stance that the others can't, and which require very different solutions. Specifically; Flyrants, Green Tides, Riptides & anti-flyers, and Drop Pods. There will be no "take all comers" list that you can come up with that will, in a competitive atmosphere, win against all of them. If you want balanced games, you and your group will have to start having discussions before about the style and competitiveness of the games you want, and what is and isn't acceptable.

The most effective lists I've seen for Imperial Guard as of late are ones based on out-surviving their opponents while presenting a few big targets. Your plan should be to use "big stuff" to draw forces away from your "take and hold" units so that by the time your opponent has killed your "big stuff" they cannot get back to position in time to push you off the objectives. Vendettas with small squads in them, along with the Knight and Land Raider can try and pull things away. Just remember that these units are going away to die, and hopefully will kill some strong stuff in the meantime. Your Priest, Inquisitor, Psyker, and infantry blobs can hold the primary objectives in the meantime. Don't be afraid to flat-out your Chimeras to put them inbetween your enemies and your infantry. Best case, their charred husks will block line of sight to your infantry (keeping them alive longer). Worst case, your opponent loses speed for moving over them/through cover.

Remember, you're not playing to kill them. You're playing to "not be killed". Try to get psychic powers that boost your survivability, rather than increase your offensive output.

Good luck!
