I want to bring up this discussion because i have a friend who is currently playing necrons and i want to hear your response to the question.

The question: In your opinion, what is the best unit and/or HQ against necrons? (this is about killing points, not objectives)

My personal opinion is either the WarpSpider or the Fire Dragons. Warp spiders because they have monofilament on their Death spinner. Fire Dragons because their fusion fun has Melta (not to mention its a S8 Ap1). I am not sure which unit would be better though.

When you say Necrons, do you mean our Tanks or the Troops?

Troops for example; Lychguard
Tanks for Example; Monolith

Troops i suppose. If i was to say tanks then most likely fire dragons would win at that

Okay well, I've got a Friend who plays Eldar and he uses a few tactics.

To take out my Tanks he uses two squads of Swooping Hawks, they have Haywire grenades*, and in case you don't know what they are at the bottom.

To take out my Units he uses all sorts of units, but things with Blast templates (Large Blast and Blast) are effective (Fire Prism for example, use the Dispersed* on Warriors and other basic units with 3+ saves and use Focused* on HQ's) and things with lots of shots like Shuriken Cannons and Catapults.

Remember: Necrons Take out tanks really easily compared to most Races

*Haywire Grenades; Range: 8" / S 2 / AP - / Assault 1, Haywire*
*Haywire; 1 they do nothing, 2-5 its a glancing hit and a 6 penetrating hit.
*Dispersed; 60" / S 5 / AP 3 / Heavy 1, Large Blast.
*Focused; 60" / S 7 / AP 2 / Heavy 1, Blast.

Out of the 2 options, Fire Dragons would probably be the best overall. S8 AP1 would instagib them, always ignore their armor, and could easily deal with any vehicles if they bring any.

But outside of those options, just bring D.

Monofilament works off I, and Necron infantry have a bad I.
So, Warp Spiders, Night Spinner, and the HWP version.

Vehicles? Bright Lances to get the shield down, then lots of S6.
There's Haywire, too.

Fire Dragons do both:
ID for infantry,
Melta against shields.

Fire dragons seem like the better versatile unit. I personally think having a army of Warp spiders, fire dragons, swooping hawks, and wraith guard is a necrons worst nightmare.

adding Fuegan and/or Jain Zar for a HQ are probably the best choice

Fire Dragons are not that scary as a Necron player. The only units they insta-gib are Warriors, Immortals, Flayed Ones and Scarabs who are all expendable and not worth Fire Dragon's time. The rest is T5 and has RP or Invulnerable saves. They used to be decent at killing Wraiths due to instant kill but now that isn't true.

The biggest threat to Necrons are Wraithguard and D-scythes. The D ignores both their Armour and RP. And in the case of Wraithguard, will instant kill all our HQ except a Destroyer Lord (who may still die depending on your D3 roll). If you deploy them well it'll force the Necron player to respond to your movements instead of you responding to his. You will control the board as long as those units live.

As for warp spiders. Sure they'll inflict a lot of wounds but the casualties will be relatively light after amour saves and RP. Just make sure you have BLOS terrain nearby to jump behind after shooting.

Also, I've gone up against a Jain Zar before and it's the only Eldar HQ I couldn't kill in melee. I charged her unit with Wraiths and a Destroyer Lord and we were tied up in combat for 4 turns. I killed everything around Jain Zar but I couldn't kill her thanks to all my models being reduced to WS 1 and her removing my warscythe from the fight.

Isn't the Eldar's best weapon simply showing up and mentioning that you're playing Eldar? It still counts as tabling the opponent when they tell you to off and pack up before one of their models even hits the table, right?!

RIIIIGHT?!

Sure, everyone is correct to bring up D-Scythe wraithguard, but if your Necron enemy is also running lots of Necron infantry don't forget that they suck at close combat, and have crap initiative (meaning that after they lose they never get away). You can't RP out of a sweeping advance.

My most regular opponent is a Necron, and my biggest win was when I played a Storm Guardian host with a melee aspect host and and Avatar in the middle.

No, Fire Dragons are not that dangerous vs. Necrons. It depends on the Necron list.
Spiders can go down in a hail of fire. Necrons have several options here, like Warriors/Immortals in a Night Scythe, Tomb Blades, and whatnot.
