I've recently fallen quite heavily for Guild Ball. It's a fantastic game with a great collection of characterful miniatures. I've spent years messing about with painting minis and never really getting very far, so it speaks volumes about my passion for this game, that I've actually started to finish the paint jobs. I played in my first tournament on Saturday and was able to field an entire team of painted models which is practically unheard of where I am concerned.

Having contracted the Guild Ball bug, I'm going to start blogging my progress as I work my way through the various different Guilds and different players. To begin with, I'll be showing the players from my Brewer's Guild. Unlike other games, each Guild Ball miniature is a named player. There are no points values, you just choose which players from your Guild that you want to field (you need a captain, a mascot and 4 other players for a standard game).

This fellow is Stave. He's the Brewers' token "big guy" (each Guild has at least one) and spends the game chucking barrels at opposing players to knock them over or even push them off the pitch. Taking out an opposing player gets you 2 victory points, so he's pretty handy to have on the team. I didn't want to do the standard brown paint job for my Brewers, so I went with a strong blue for the clothing. I also chose to do blond hair to give them a bit of a Bavarian appearance (although it makes Stave look like a porn star).

As I progress, I really want to work on blending my highlights a bit more as this is just standard layering. It works ok for table top standard, but I want a smoother look. Speaking of which, I also need to work on getting a smoother finish with my paints, so will try to thin them down more before slapping it on.

Yes! This game is awesome, our group has gotten so into it and I'm actually making the Guildball ModCube tokens tomorrow! Looking forward to trying out my Butchers more, and will definitely be following your progress on these

Thanks both

@ RiTides - Modcubes would be very useful for this game. It needs a lot of tokens.

Here's my next Brewers' player, Spigot (apologies for the blurry pic - working on my photography skills!). He's basically the Guild Ball Gazza in that he used to be a really talented player, but now drinks too much. The Brewers keep him on the team for the occasional moment of brilliance and because he acts as an inspiration to the other players. The Brewers aren't great at passing/scoring, but Spigot improves their chances if they are within 4" of him.

Pretty cool models!

But this is just IMO, I have a sneaky suspicion the people who made guild ball made their miniatures eerily non sporty for a reason. Most look more in place in Mordheim or Cadwallon. I made a joke to a friend who was into Guildball that if you took any model and placed a ball in front of them, instant guildball model!

No offense to the actual guildball game of course! just my observation on their model design

Cheers Kenshin - I don't disagree with regards to the Guild Ball sculpts - they certainly wouldn't look out of place in other games, especially the ones tooled up with swords, cleavers, hammers etc. Most of The Union could pass for Mordheim minis quite easily.

Over in the official Guild Ball forums, we had a discussion about to what extent their weapons could be used in the game as killing another player on purpose is not allowed (although accidents do happen).

The one give away that these are minis from a sports game are the studs on their boots, but you can't see these on all of the players.

On to Friday now (and again, apologies for the appalling photography - I've got some lamps, just waiting for daylight bulbs!)

All of the Guilds have at least one girl on the team (except perhaps the Engineers - their female player is literally made of wood, so not sure if she qualifies) and Friday is the Brewers' obligatory member of the fairer sex. She is also the Brewers' player most likely to score a goal, but she is far from being the best striker in the game. Your best hope is to keep Spigot within 4" to use his Football Legend bonus and then down a beer which further improves her chances of scoring (this is her heroic play, but you need some Momentum to activate it).

This is really cool stuff, it is great to hear that your love of the game has motivated you to actually finish paint jobs on the miniatures. The small amount of miniatures needed to play must help with that as well.

These look like some brilliantly characterful sculpts and you are doing them justice. Stave is my favourite so far, but I look forward to seeing what else you paint up.

Best of luck.

Spigot looks great! The photo, though... looks like he was running a bit too fast for the camera

Very kind Yes, I enjoyed Stave and spent the most amount of time on him

Cheers - yes, that's my bad photography Hopefully my pics will improve now I have daylight lamps (see below).

Her name actually is Friday. Sure I can add a full frontal shot later Don't get too excited though - the female sculpts in Guild Ball are fairly restrained although there are a few exceptions. Brisket (the Butcher's striker) springs to mind.

Anyway, here is Hooper. He's the Brewers heavy hitter and you can really keep the opposing team on the ropes with his attacks. He's not my favourite Brewers sculpt and I'm afraid I rushed him in my efforts to get them done in time for the tournament.

EDIT - I'm actually more pleased with the photograph

Is that a throwing knife in her right hand?

It is indeed - one of her plays is to throw a knife (does a bit of damage and inflicts the poisoned condition as well).
