Hi all

I recently started a Demons army for WHFB, heavy on conversions and scratch-building. Now I'm going to have to swap out the bases for AOS, or keep the square/rectangular ones and use these models for D&D or other tabletop RPGs.

My inspiration for the army came from flipping through some old D&D books, and recalling how much I loved all the weird, creepy subterranean monsters; mind-flayers, carrion crawlers, rust monsters, otyughs, all that stuff. So I picked that as a theme for this army.

The models are all converted or entirely scratch-built. The core concepts behind the army design are:

-Lots of character. Combination of horrible & humorous.
-Very similar infantry, differentiated by color scheme and paint style.
-Big monsters with coherent thematic elements; multiple eyes, tentacles, and scales.
-Characters and heroes are bigger/more elaborate versions of the basic infantry.

Beasts of Nurgle. Kind of weird demon pollywogs:

So the first step in making this army was to prep & convert all my infantry. I wanted small models (the better to fit into tunnels and caves), and I wanted a sort of mind-flayer meets Jawa kid of vibe.

After looking through my options, the old Battle for Skull Pass night goblins were perfect. Smaller than other goblins, easy to convert because they're mainly single-piece models, and available in bulk.

I used a Dremel mandrill bit to carve out the faces of all the goblins, making a small hollow inside the hood, then shaved the goblin icons off the shields.

I sculpted green-stuff tentacles and faces into the hollow hoods.

I made a couple hundred of these guys, and will be using them for all the infantry. Paint scheme and little conversion touches will distinguish the different unit types. For example, Plaguebearers having one eye or three eyes arranged in the Nurgle symbol, that sort of thing.

I know the weapons don't match what the units are "supposed" to have, but I don't care. I love the look of these hordes of little guys, all ranked up at attention. And the paint schemes should leave no doubt as to which unit is which.

Herald of Khorne!

I picked up a load of these older, metal night goblin characters, to convert into my lords/heroes.

WIP Keeper of Secrets. This was my test model for the bigger demons. Balsa-wood core, and a skin of green-stuff.

Here are some WIP shots of the Beasts of Nurgle.

I'm using a deliberately splotchy painting technique on this army, to give me nice color contrast rather than smooth blends. From arm's length away, optical mixing will soften up the color transitions.

This will allow me to paint the army quickly, and still have bold color contrast without a ton of blending.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
WIP shots of my first unit of Plague Drones of Nurgle. These guys are still a ways off from being completed. All of them will have wings eventually. I'm not going to put riders on them, as I like the whole flying tadpole-fly-hybrid monsters...

All the big lumps on the skin of these guys is going to be painted like huge cysts/blisters, all full of pus & ready to burst.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
WIP shots of the Skullcannons. I love the way these guys are turning out. Of all the models so far, I feel they best capture the goofy/horrifying combination that I'm going for. LOL

A group shot of some models, to give you an idea of scale:

Beasts of Nurgle. 4 of 8 done so far.

Completed Keeper of Secrets:

And a completed Skullcannon:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Nurgle Soul Grinder: kind of a huge slug monster, with all these snail eye-stalks on top.

At the bottom of the front end, it's going to have two mouths, one over the other. And another smaller mouth higher up on the body. The larger mouths will have teeth, and the smaller mouth will have a long tongue hanging out, like the Beasts of Nurgle have.

The arms protruding from the flanks of the beastie will end in long tentacles, that lay on the base. Some of these will end in little lamprey-style mouths.

And some very preliminary shots of the Flesh Hounds. These guys will be little bundles of spikes and eyes, with a huge mouth at the front end, ringed with tentacles that are extended out in grasping poses. I want them to look like vicious tiny parasites. The kind of thing that makes your skin crawl when you see an electron-microscope picture of it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
More WIP shots of the big slug.

Like most of the monsters, this is a carved & shaped balsa-wood core, covered with a skin of Apoxie Sculpt, then a detail layer of green stuff.

Started moving the models onto round bases, for 40K and Age of Sigmar.

In the meantime, I've been painting some random models for D&D, and started on some Skaven.

Got some more work done on the Flesh Hounds. Of course I had to make a unit of 8. Decided to change up the aesthetic for them, now that I don't need to rank them up for WHFB anymore. Now that they're on round bases, they're going to be these multi-eyed-fishy-bug-monster-things.

I added the first layer of green stuff skin. And did a test model, which I'm pretty damn happy with. All toothy and with his sad little fins doing nothing to help him move along. Like a possessed version of Nemo. LOL

Also finished the green stuff work on the set of 3 wings for one of the Plague Drones.

More detail work on the Flesh Hounds, primarily adding mouths, spines, and tentacles. Slow going, but I'm happy with how they're coming together.

Finished the bulk of the sculpting on the Flesh Hounds. Just need to wait for this pass of Green Stuff to dry, then I'll add the little armor plates, which are the last detail they need.

Really happy with how they're turning out.

Started some Ork vehicles for my 40K army. Just a little side project done for laughs. So far I've gotten started on an Ork Battlewagon with swappable turret. Currently I'm building the Zzzap Gun for it. But I'll be doing a Kannon and a Lobba for it too. I want the big gun to look like a giant version of a cheesy 1950s sci-fi ray gun. LOL

Inside the battlewagon is going to be the Kill Cannon. I'm going to be putting Boyz with heavy weapons on the side platforms, to represent either 4 rokkits or 4 big shootas.

The smaller vehicles are going to be Warbuggies/Wartrakks.

These are all very much works in progress. EDIT: PICS REMOVED, AS I SOLD THE ARMY.

these vehicles look really neat--I really like the Zzzap gun! Did you make those bellows/accordian looking hoses using green stuff? or are they a part? If you made them, how'd you get that shape? I can't imagine getting that level of consistency by hand alone.

"Sir, the enemy has us encircled!"

Finished some more RPG figures. Another Confrontation armored skeleton, and a random GW goblin I found kicking around my bits boxes.

These guys were a speed-painting exercise. About three hours total, to get both models done. I'm not entirely happy with every little thing about them, but I think they turned out OK considering the pace I was working at.

The Confrontation stuff has come up great, and while I'm not 100% sold on that Khorne ...thing, it works perfectly as a generic demon. (and yeah, I have that model, too). The scheme you chose works for both Khorne and generic.

The thief-type model looks pretty cool as well. Is that a particular PC or NPC?

Thanks! The thief guy is just gonna be on stand-by. One of my players loves the Leadership feat, and building an entourage of followers & henchmen. At some point she'll want a rogue working for her. That's when this guy will hit the table.
