Im running a friendly 1850 double round robin tournament where each army plays each other twice - Eldar, IG, SW, Orks and Nids. Nothing competitive and most lists are semi-themed.
However coming close to the end of the first round of games IG and SW lists are struggling. Now, thats ok on one hand but I can see for the second round it getting a touch tedious.
In addition it would add a little fun to allow each army to tweak some units.

I was thinking of allowing each army after R1 to change some points/units. Has anyone done this mid tourney and if so what do you think might be a fair number to allow? I was thinking circa 300 of the 1850 points? Too much, too little?

Some tournaments include the option for a "sideboard", an idea originating from the card game Magic the Gathering (at least, I believe that's where it's from), of having a certain amount of extra points for units not used in the first round that can be swapped into the main list (taking out equivalent points worth of units) and I think it's popular in Warmachine tournaments and such.

My only issues would be:
-You're implementing it mid-way through? If it had been done before any games, then people would have written their 'sideboard' units before seeing the opponent's lists. Doing it after could lead to silver bullets (units specifically chosen to counter something you know your opponent is bringing, that aren't generally TAC units).
-Do all the players involved have enough spare models to make use of this addition? If one player is currently using his/her entire collection, it might not be received well. I'd guess you know each player well enough to have considered it already, but I mention it just incase.

Overall though, I'm in favour of the idea - it can be very demoralizing knowing you're stuck with your original list, especially if you've already played that person before and their force happens to be (accidentally) very well tailored to kill yours.

Ah my apologies, Im playing the tournament against myself!
Just throwing some dice around and trying out different builds.

The sideboard is a cool idea though. I have no problem cheating myself

Sideboards would only work if you know what your opponent is playing and if you are to play them multiple times (best of 3 and stuff)

I think army swaps wouldn't be too big a deal thought i can see people meta picking counter lists depending on the previous round winners.

That's either brilliant or crazy or both!

If I did it I'd always be worried that Other Me had a cunning plan going on.

Sounds like a reasonable way to play-test tournament lists on your own.

As for how many points to change, I'd suggest about 15-25% as a number randomly picked out of the air.

The last time I tried playing against myself I got a lucky roll and and mysef decided i didn't like what I was playing at. Ended up starting an argument and blows were thrown. Amongst other things. I now have a restraining order from myself requiring that I stay 50 yards away from myself at all times.

Yeah its more for fun really. I had a thread years back going through the pros and cons of 1 player games but its fun to try out builds you usually wouldnt play and just to throw some dice about
