Hello
Just wondering how much people have spent on their army/armies in total?

I spent £400 on a £1200 7000 point army all thanks to ebay over the last few months

I have a 10k Dark Eldar army. I probably spent $200-300 on it.

My GK cost me around $850 AUD to amass the 4500pts.
My Eldar cost me about $1400 to get to 11,000pts.
My Marines were around $1100 to get to the same level as eldar (SM are a lot more common 2nd hand).
My IG was $400 for 2500pts.

My WHFB High Elves cost me around $250 for 3000pts.

For all of them, judicious scavenging at 2nd hand sale tables at cons and events got me most of it. About only the "core" (2 troops and HQ) were retail.

It's nearly always worked out to be 2pts per dollar. Generally I don't buy second hand. Having a few thousand points of a few different armies has added up I suppose. So I'd hazard a guess at $4.5k

Roughly $210 on my new Space Marines army - not including the Codex. Roughly 1850 total.

A hundred of that was spent on old, second hand models that I had to strip, convert and repaint. And there were no juicy new units in it - no thunder hammer/stormshield terminators - just claw/fist/bolter ones, no whirlwinds, no land raider crusaders. Just one regular land raider with lascannons and a plain rhino.

However, many of the tactical dudes in the used lot were from 3rd/4th edition, as well as the rhino, so that was a plus.

This was far cheaper than my Eldar, where I spent more than that on just two models [Wraithknight and Crimson Hunter].

I silently weep at night at the amount I spent getting into this game twice. Granted it wasn't a lot but to me it was. Especially now since I recently quit again and just have my space Marines sitting in a corner of my room collecting dust.

Ebay is crack cocaine for wargamers imo.

You think you saved money now.... you just wait. If you're married, try explaining the savings to your wife after a few years of 'deals'. Uhg.

She’ll have her hobbys. If not, get her some.

"How much did you pay for that skien of yarn and how many do you need for your project?”
“mummbles”
“I’ll be at the game store”

I could take a stab at estimating my army, but I’d have to figure out a lot of things. Adjust for inflation? What parts were gifts? What discount I got during what era, etc. A general rule of thumb is that buying new from GW is about 3-4 points per dollar. Space marines tend to be one of the better ratios as well, and make up the bulk of my collection.

I know I’m not in “house” range. Defiantly “car”, probably just a quality used one, or low end new car though. If I had to take a wild stab, probably $4,000 ish. That includes my Eldar and the bookshelves of obsolete rules/codexes. And decades of fun. Sure, it’s an expensive hobby, but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it for a long time now, so it’s money well spent. And not that bad when you take a slow approach.

I couldn't tell you how much I've spent on one army, but I can tell you that in total I've spent 2647.5 MYR (405 GBP or 615 USD for those of you in the realm of GW shops).

I've begged, and borrowed - but I haven't stolen yet - to get as much as I have for that kind of money, particularly as here in Malaysia everything is over RRP.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

I certainly do

Nids- Like 200 bucks, most of mine came from the Battle of Macragge start set, and my cousin got one too, so i gave him the Marines and i got the Nids, i only bought a Lictor, a Carnifex and a Hive Tyrant, oh and a box of Stealers.

Space Marines: 80 bucks for about 1000 points. Bought my cousins Ultramarines when he stopped playing.

Orks: 600-800, as i actually bought all of these from GW during 5th ed. Total points where around 3000 and something, but with the new dex idk.

Tzeentch Daemons: 300 buks give or take. Got them when their 4th ed dex was still up (personally i preferred that one, yes i am weird) its a bunch of Horrors and like 15-18 flamers, 3 screamers, 3 Heralds, 1 Daemon Prince, and a Soul Grinder. This list actually did pretty well in 5th and early 6th. Love those Flamers

Skitarri/ Ad Mech:300, granted most of my "Vanguard" are actual Mutant Chronicle minis (as i think they look cooler) and i dont own any Ad Mech ones, this will still probably be my cheapest army.

Sisters of Battle: 1,400 from E Bay, for 4000 points of models, 90% of wich are painted, pretty well actually.

Undead Legions: 1,400 from E Bay again. I have no idea on the points value but its a lot of minis, i have over 50 Graveguard and about 60% are pro painted.

Beastmen/The Herd: 600 bucks? and i think i have almost 30 Minotaurs. Id say another 100 bucks and they will be done for good. Again from E Bay.

So yes, we hate money. (all of the dollars are American btw)

Edit: ive bought these over the course of like 10 years.

Considering I've been playing fantasy for about 23 years, and 40k for about 12 years, I have no idea how much I've spent on models over all that time... but I just realized the various rulebooks for 10 combined editions (and now 4 armies total) is roughly $2000 before you even count models. Ouch.

When I first started, I cashed in a bunch of discounts (including customer loyalty discounts, the birthday discount they give, and several gift certificates I'd squirreled away) to get the army going. (I got somewhere around $300 and paid something like $20 out of pocket.) Since then, I keep an eye out for deals.

Old school kabalite warriors are usually overpriced, but if you're patient you can eventually find them for around fifty cents apiece. I stopped doing ebay a long time ago, unless you have the time and patience to sit around and snipe people, it's mostly filled with shady characters hocking overpriced minis. I vastly prefer the trading forums of sites like Dakka, the Dark City, and Bartertown. (But mostly Dakka, truth be told.)

I will always--always--take free minis and bits. Even if it's damaged, even if I don't play the army, even if I don't play the game. The modeling is my favorite part, and I love sitting with a bits box trying to mix and match pieces to refurbish a damaged miniature. Lots of my DE came from trades that were the result of exactly that: me getting rid of crap I'd fixed up but didn't actually want.

I also love conversions and counts-as. My eldar allies are exodites (using wood elves). My Corpsethief Claw is converted from a group of 'turncoat' wraithlords. ($10 apiece as opposed to the $45 of a standard talos.) My grotesques are made from Dreamblade minis, rat ogres, and confrontation figs.

I'm all about trying to cut corners to save money for my army. If the figures in this thread are representative, I think I'm doing pretty good!

I was an idiot. I spent money on paint and cases and back packs and GW tools and other non bitz accessories. I wasted $1000.

I spent $2000 into CSM 6 years ago. I only recovered $600.

Then I went and bought IK on ebay and great forums such as "NotDakkaDakka". Made only one sale here and every seller I tried to buy from on Dakka Dakka was dragging their feet or worse tried to scam me. I have no trust with doing business with people on dakka dakka anymore. I dont mean to be rude but you guys give me the biggest head aches because you all are a bunch of trolls for real. You guys troll me in the forums and you guys troll me in the sales. I really do not think I am being rude or offensive in any way or breaking any rules. I am being brutally honest. I dont mean to start a flame war or whag ever. j just think some of people on dakka need to hear the truth and stop being donkeh caves. For emperor sake' some guy rudely insulted me for misspelling just 1 letter of their screen name.

S'funny...I've had the exact (exact!) opposite experience. Dakkaites have been far more trustworthy than eBay sellers for me. I've never been scammed on this site, but I've run into more than one shady deal in the Wild West hellscape that is eBay.

If you mean n a per-army basis, I can use my GKs as an example.

My first GK army cost $230, which was a 3rd ed metal army, 3 Land Raiders, and the Daemonhunters codex.

When I update that army to 5th, and all plastic, it cost me around $400.

When I updated them to their current codex, all I did was buy the new codex. So, I've spent just under $700 for one of my armies.

My Marines and Sisters were all purchased in 2nd, and both cost around $200 each (everything was way cheaper back then). I did spend around $3k on Armorcast Titans and Baneblades, though, and have over $200 in just one Knight Titan and its two codexes. Got to love that.

Yet, GW is no where near the most expensive modeling hobby I have, as I've been building master grade and perfect grade Gundam models for almost 3 decades.

I would estimate that my Steel Legion army probably cost me about 2500$ CAD. Maybe 3000$.

My estimate would be that it is about a dollar a point.
