I am facing a Chaos Space Marine List. Last game I got steamrolled with a less than an optimal setup on my side, he made a huge emphasis on CC, while I had brought melta, a bunch of devastators.
It is important to note that there are no fliers in his list. He has 20 Flesh Hounds, a level 3 Chaos Sorcerer and Chaos Lord buffed to hell (focused on CC, he was dropping 10 attacks per charge). These units are the ones that caused me serious pain.
He also had 3 Obliterators and 2 squads of bikes with meltaguns.

I really want to defeat him, and killing the Hounds + Lord is a must.

Here is a list that I am planning on taking:

Combined Arms Detachment

HQ (185pts)

Pedro Kantor

Elites (424pts)

Sternguard Veteran Squad (229pts)
6 Veterans - 4 with Combi Melta
1 Veteran Sergeant
Drop Pod

Vanguard Veteran Squad (195pts)
4 Veterans - 2 with Claws, 2 with Power Axe and Storm Shield
1 Veteran Sergeant - Power Sword + Storm Shield
Drop Pod

Troops (364pts)

Tactical Squad (195pts)
Meltagun, 9x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant with Combi-melta
Drop Pod

Tactical Squad (169pts)
Heavy Bolter, 5x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant
Razorback with Twin-linked Lascannon

Fast Attach (127pts)

Assault Squad (127pts)
2x Flamer, Jump Packs, 5x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant with Power Sword

Heavy Support (150pts)

Devastator Squad with 4x Lascannon

The idea is that Pedro joins the Sternguard then deploys together with the Vanguard Veterans next to the Chaos Lord and Flesh Hounds. The Assault Squad catches up to be in 12" of Pedro. All 3 units charge the Hounds + Lord.
The devastators focus on the Obliterators, the Tactical Squad with Metla Drops next to them too for added metla pressure.
The last squad of Marines with the Heavy Bolter will hold an objective, while the Razorback Focuses on the Obliterators too.
The rest of his amry is cultists and wiping them was not a challenge in the last game, I am not worried about them at all.

I really need some feedback and suggestions on how to handle that huge horde of Hounds + the Lord. Any changes to my list that can help me counter his list?

P.S - I am still new to the game, only a few games played so far.

Another idea I had was dropping the Sternguard and Devastators to grab a Unit of Terminators with Shields and Hammers in a Land Raider. Not sure if it is worth it though. Would make my CC very very scary though.

Okay.

First suggestion:

If you have a million daemons and a chaos lord of khorne thundering up the other side of the board, "charge at him" is not really a plan with great long-term prospects....

The chaos lord and the flesh hounds are both probably going to struggle with 'proper' armour. Meltagun bikes and obliterators sadly aren't, but there might be some mileage in a dreadnought or two. If you can lock that lord and his puppy brigade in combat with something that they can't hurt, it's only a matter of time before they die.

If you're sending the sternguard in as a suicide unit to kill what are essentially massed light infantry, would flamers be a better choice for the combi-weapons?

A terminator assault squad with thunder hammers should hold up well to the lord but the dogs probably have enough attacks to break them, and getting them into position could prove awkward.

One cheap option for inconveniencing the doggy pack - a cheap librarian is >70 points. Take sanctic daemonology and you get the primaris power - banishment - automatically. Tag the flesh hounds and they get -1 to their invulnerable saves. Worth doing if you're going to hammer them hard in that turn.

Termagants expended for the Hive Mind: ~2835

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Made some changes to the list. Still feel that I am going to get steamrolled and tabled though.

Combined Arms Detachment

HQ

LVL 2 Librarian with Power Sword (125pts)
Teeth of Tera

Elites

Venerable Dreadnought (165pts)
Plasma Cannon + Heavy Flamer
Drop Pod

Dreadnought (145pts)
Assault Cannon
Drop Pod

Vanguard Veteran Squad (195pts)
4 Veterans - 2 with Claws, 1 with Power Axe and Storm Shield, 1 with Power Sword + Storm Shield
1 Veteran Sergeant - Power Axe + Storm Shield
Drop Pod

Troops

Tactical Squad (190pts)
Plasma Cannon, 9x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant
Rhino

Tactical Squad (149pts)
Heavy Bolter, 5x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant
Razorback with Twin-linked Heavy Bolter

Fast Attack

Assault Squad (127pts)
2x Flamer, Jump Packs, 5x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant with Power Sword

Heavy Support (130pts)

Devastator Squad with 4x Rocket Launchers

What is a list that you guys would suggest? I would really want to have a standing chance.

The idea here would be to focus on the Flesh Hounds + Lord on turns 1 and 2. First unloading all the firepower into that squad, then charging them with the Dreads + Assault Squad + Vets & Librarian.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Small update, he is replacing his obliterators with Chaos Spawn. That basically makes his whole list focused on CC.

What is the right way to approach this with my Space Marines? What should I change/adapt? Would love to hear some feedback

Thanks

Might try to make a nice deathstar list:

HQ

Captain Lysander (230pts)

LVL 2 Librarian with Power Sword (140pts)
The Shield Eternal

Elites

Venerable Dreadnought (180pts)
Assault Cannon + Heavy Flamer
Drop Pod

Assault Terminators (465pts)
3 Terminators with Storm Shields and Hammers
1 Terminator with 2 Lightning Claws
1 Terminator Sergeant - Storm Shield and Hammer
Land Raider

Troops

Tactical Squad (120pts)
Plasma Cannon, 4x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant
Rhino

Tactical Squad (115pts)
Heavy Bolter, 4x Space Marines
Space Marine Sergeant
Rhino

Tactical Squads hold objectives.
Lysander and the Librarian join the Terminators in the Land Raider, with the goal of making a charge at the Lord + Flesh Hounds. Librarian will debuff the hounds. Lysander will challenge the Lord and hopefully win.
Dread will drop in next the Flesh Hounds + Lord to take a couple hounds down and then charge them. Hopefully this will be enough to deal with that pack. Could work out well if the Dread holds them in combat for a turn, so that Lysander and Terminators can charge them from the side.
After that it will be clean up duty, since the rest of his list does not present any real challenge.

The trick here will be to get a good charge off, so it will come down to positioning.

I would love to get some feedback, since I have not used this kind of list before (only ran battle-demi companies), and have no serious idea on how to deal with what I am faced with. PS my game is on Saturday.
