Was wondering if anyone tried or had thoughts about running The Archangels in an 1850 point game - the requirements are pretty tight for points (only a couple 100 spare after requirements - mainly 4 furiosos and 10 vanguard vet squads) but the benefits of 1st turn DS, with rerolls, with only 1 dice scatter are huge!

So this is what I came up with, and I almost have all the models to do it - I might actually try this list pretty soon using some tacticals for vanguard proxies just to see how it goes.

I couldn't fit drop pods into the list for the dreds - the points pretty much don't allow it, so they would start on the board and hope their 13 armor lets them survive turn 1.

Anyway, any thoughts on the following appreciated:

BA The Archangels (1850pts)

Codex: Blood Angels, Exterminatus: The Archangels

Formation benefits - Stubborn, Start reserve rolls turn 1, Reroll failed reserve rolls, Scatter only 1 D6

Captain w jump pack (105pts)
Chaplain w jump pack (105pts)

Furioso Dreadnought (125pts)
Furioso Dreadnought (125pts)
Furioso Dreadnought (125pts)
Furioso Dreadnought (125pts)

8 x Vanguard Veteran Squad + Jumpacks + Meltabomb (115pts each)
2 x Vanguard Veteran Squad + Jumpacks (110 each)

You have to have a terminator captain and terminator chaplain in this formation.

Taking Captain Karlaen could be cool then you get +1 to seize the initiative, just if you really want to go first, he's not a bad captain either.

I'm at work so I only have battlescribe to go with - but it looks like it is only "The Archangels Strike Force" with the terminator armor requirement (which is what I remember from reading the book last night as well). This list uses the formation "The Archangels" I know its pretty close but not the same - this one is the 4 furioso/10 vet squads one (could be sternguard or terminators also).

Karlaen would be cool, and originally I tried to work in a terminator squad with this - but couldn't make it work in 1850 points and didn't want the vet squads to go bare.

I'm pretty sure you need the terminators, I don't have the book but I'd recommend checking just to make sure.

Yup - need a TDA HQ.

The Dreads really, really, need pods.
You're also not getting any real benefit from the formation rules either - Vanguard Vets can't assault from deep strike (in this formation anyway) so you're probably just better off starting them on the table - they're fast enough. I'd probably also want Vanguard Vets (and hey, DC, they're better) from the Baal Strike Force for I5 on the charge.

I think this formation is better for Hammernators who lack mobility. Drop them into your opponents deployment zone turn 1 with podded Dread support, turn 2 assault.

The formation before it has the terminator armor restriction.

You could actually run this in 1850 with a jump pack captain...thats a lot of first turn deep strike - 50 vanguard vets

Chaos is correct. That specific formation doesn't require tda armor on the IC's, unlike the other very closely related archangels detachment, which does.

I've thought about running the formation like that as well. Problem being that you have like no special weapons and walking AKA dead on arrival dreads. Best warlord trait you could possibly get is descent of angels for extreme awesomeness.

but with 50 vanguards in their face turn 1...(i did 5 squads with a power weapon and 5 with handflamer+meltabomb)

will the dreads really be in danger?

All in all seems like a decent list. That many deep striking vets is terrifying

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes

Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

actually i just realized i didnt cost in the jumpacks....which means no special weapons or flamers/melta bombs in original list since its 15pts per unit...might make back some points dropping powerfist off captain and leaving dreads as stock

that should be atleast enough for meltabombs in each vanguard squad
