Hi there, another idea to play the new Tau Codex.

+++ Tau Empire +++

+ Formations +

Infiltration Cadre

Pathfinder Team [4x Pathfinder]
Pathfinder Team [4x Pathfinder]
Pathfinder Team [4x Pathfinder]

TX4 Piranhas
TX4 Piranha [Fusion Blaster]

XV25 Stealth Battlesuits [Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon, Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon]
Stealth Shas'ui with Fusion Blaster [Fusion Blaster]

XV25 Stealth Battlesuits [Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon, Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon]
Stealth Shas'ui with Fusion Blaster [Fusion Blaster]

Optimized Stealth Cadre

XV25 Stealth Battlesuits [Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon, Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon]
Stealth Shas'ui with Fusion Blaster [Fusion Blaster]

XV25 Stealth Battlesuits [Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon, Stealth Shas'ui with Burst Cannon]
Stealth Shas'ui with Fusion Blaster [Fusion Blaster]

XV95 Ghostkeel Battlesuits
Ghostkeel Shas'vre [Cyclic Ion Raker, Target Lock, Twin-linked Fusion Blaster]
Ghostkeel Shas'vre [Cyclic Ion Raker, Target Lock, Twin-linked Fusion Blaster]
Ghostkeel Shas'vre [Fusion Collider, Twin-linked Fusion Blaster]

Retaliation Cadre

Commander [2x MV7 Marker Drone]
XV8 Commander Crisis Suit [Command and Control Node, Drone Controller, Multi-spectrum Sensor Suite, Puretide Engram Neurochip, XV8-02 Crisis 'Iridium' Battlesuit]

XV104 Riptide Battlesuits
Riptide Shas'vre [Early Warning Override, Ion Accelerator, Twin-linked Plasma Rifle]

XV8 Crisis Battlesuits
Crisis Shas'ui [2x Fusion Blaster]

XV8 Crisis Battlesuits
Crisis Shas'ui [2x Fusion Blaster]

XV8 Crisis Battlesuits [4x MV7 Marker Drone]
Crisis Shas'ui [2x Plasma Rifle, Target Lock]
Crisis Shas'ui [2x Plasma Rifle, Target Lock]
Crisis Shas'ui [2x Plasma Rifle, Target Lock]

XV88 Broadside Battlesuits
Broadside [Twin-linked High-Yield Missile Pod, Twin-linked Smart Missile System]
Broadside [Twin-linked High-Yield Missile Pod, Twin-linked Smart Missile System]

The idea is, to put the Pathfinder Teams, the Ghostkeels, some of the Stealth Battlesuits and the Riptide on the table. If the enemy is not killing the Pathfinder Teams, the Riptide is fighting with full Marker Light support. If he kills the Pathfinder Teams, all my Crisis and the Broadsides are coming on the table. The Commander is in the unit of the 3 Crisis with Plasma and able to put some Marker Lights for the Riptide.

What do you think? Would that work?

Is that list that bad?

No, it's not a bad list. It's not a great list, but it's not a bad list. The idea behind fielding Infiltration and Retaliation makes perfect sense. Infiltration does reconnaissance and calls down Retaliation. However, on the battlefield, they cancel each other out. Retaliation is coming down turn two anyway, eliminating the need for the Infiltration. Here is some feedback on each formation:

Piranhas with Fusion Blasters don't quite cut it. The only have BS3, so are missing half the time. I'm in the department of running Piranhas bare bones or not at all. To get the most out of those Stealth Suit Fusion Blasters, you need to get some Target Locks. Burst Cannons and Fusion Blasters engage totally different targets.

Again, you need Target Locks with those Stealth Fusion Blasters. I would also keep your Ghostkeels the same. Cyclic Ion Rakers all around. As it stands, your list doesn't have any anti-air and Ghostkeels are a great place to get it with Velocity Trackers. After forming the Wall of Mirrors, you have 18 S7 shots and 3 S8 Melta shots that ignore cover, hit rear armour and get resolved at BS4. If you fire all three Ghostkeels at the same target, the shots are resolved at BS5.

This load-out looks fine, but don't start the Riptide on the field. If you do that, you lose low-altitude deployment.

In general, I think Retaliation Cadres need some way to mitigate scatter or else you're going to end up all over hell's creation. Getting some Homing Beacons on Stealth teams is a great way to ensure accurate deep-striking. I hope this helps!

Close, but you actually get BS5 all the time (+1 from wall of mirrors and +1 from fire team). BS6 if you fire all at the same target (+1 from wall of mirrors, +1 from fire team, and +1 from Coordinated Firepower)

3 VT are overkill (60) for an all comers list

A VT on one of the ghost keels should be enough for most lists as you will easily kill any flyer (non MC) in one turn.

Good catch on the BS. I thought Fire Team only applied if they all shoot at the same target. That makes them way better I disagree with you on the VTs though, but it all depends on your meta. When you have multiple Dakka Flyrants and Storm Wings running around, a VT on each is pretty much mandatory.

Yeah, And the BS6 is actually better than you think, because now when overcharging with CIRs you can re-roll a 1 on gets hot.

Yeah guess it depends on your meta. But 60 points seems like a waste in an all comers list if you don't even know if your opponent will have a single flier or not... Plus marker lights help against flyers as well.

Sorry to burst your hype bubble but you need a Hunter Cadre detachment before you can start taking your auxiliary choices.

You don't need a hunter cadre to take formations
But it is just a formation detachment
Coordinated firepower is a special rule for a hunter contingent which does require a hunter cadre

No, you need at least 1 core choice before you can take ANY auxiliary choices.

For a hunter contingent yes

But the formations are still available as stand alone formations...... You just don't get the hunter contingent special rules

It is also stated in the title to this thread that it's a formation detachment NOT a hunter contingent.
