Sorry if this is in the wrong section, it didn't seem to fit anywhere!
Do any of you guys write narrative campaigns, and if so, how do you go about it? Do you start with smaller battles like Kill Team and build your way up?
I'm looking to write a campaign for me and a couple of friends. The forces would be Tau (2200 points), Tyranids (1500 points) and SM (Blood Angels, Space Wolves and Red Scorpions - also about 1500 points in total).
I like how creative you can be with 40k and think battles with a narrative, however limited, can be a lot of fun. But I'm struggling with this one. Struggling to think of some reasonable excuse for all three of these armies to clash together. Ok, reasonable may be pushing it when it comes to 40k but you know what I mean!
Any thoughts would be welcome!

I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat. I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat; and then on some dark cold night, I will steal away into your home, and punch you in the face. |

I would recommend listening/watching this and if you subscribe the 2nd part as well http://www.miniwargaming.com/content/Sit-Talk-Narrative-Campaign-Questions
You could do the classic dawn of war story, they are all on the planet and as we all know everyone gets along so well so they are all fighting, go. You could also design a planet/system/local cluster where all of these races are at and have everyone have there own continents/planets/systems to invade to try and grab more territory and have everyone come up with a reason for them to be fighting like a relic for the space marines.

I'll check out the video, thanks for the link!
Coming to think about it, it won't take a lot to think of reasons why they're all there I guess:
* Tau - The planet is lush and fertile with good mineral deposits (good for making Crisis Suits!) and potentially powerful geo-thermal energy. Enter the great good!
* Tyranids - The natural resources that make the planet attractive to the Tau make it ideal for harvesting to the Hive Mind.
* Blood Angels/ Space Wolves - War game exercises maybe?
* Red Scorpions - Need to work on this as their fluff specifically says they're suspicious of both the BA & SW because of what they see as genetic impurity. Still they're mysterious so maybe their reasons can be their own...
Just need to think carefully about how to build up the scenarios and story so that it's fun and has a point. That's going to be the tricky part!

The other thing I would look at for mission Ideas are the alter of war books, there are ones for pretty much every army and you can take elements from them to help make missions.
The biggest thing I would avoid is uneven points as it can really set one side up to fail.

I have the Tau Altar of War, need to just check out the Marine ones for some inspiration. I've had some ideas for unique rules and scenarios so it's beginning to come together.

The forge world books also have scenarios that can be adopted over to another campaign

I'd also look into the Clan Raukaan supplement, it has some pretty cool missions in it as well.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum
