Freezing to death outside the Fang

I'm hoping to pick up a copy of betrayal at calth sooner or later and I'm not sure what legion to pick.
I allready collect space wolves for 40k and like them the most out of all my options but they don't have their own rules yet and transfers/shoulder pads aren't out yet either and I don't want to wait for ages for them to come out (I haven't seen an ETA for them yet so I don't know how long I'll be waiting) however I would like to use the models in regular 40k as well to expand my rather humble force.

I am also rather interested in the alpha legion as I rather like their mysterious background and interesting colour scheme, fluff wise I guess I could field them in 40k with my wolves (say they are in disguise as SW from the 13th company returned from the eye of terror, or paint them as SW and play them as alpha legion in 30k (disguises again) untill the SW rules are released, but then I encounter the problem of no transfers/shoulder pads again).

I've always liked the emperor's children and fulgrim's model is fantastic, sadly I hear they are the weakest of the 30k armies which puts me off a little as I don't want to be stuck playing an army that struggles to compete with newer ones (like I do in 40k, poor SW )

I also rather like the model for lorgar and BaC comes with some transfers for word bearers so I wont have to order more from FW immediately. their pre heresy colour scheme is also pretty similar to the SW pre heresy scheme.

I would also like a legion that isn't too complicated to write good lists for as I'm not the best list writer out there.

so what's my best option?

not looking to do admech, like I said I'll be buying betrayal at calth as I'd rather do a legion and BaC nets me rougly 1000pts (I believe) and is waaay cheaper.

eh, EC is far from the worst, but worst in 30k is highly subjective. It's a game where at it's core (among legions at least) everyone is a marine. I Love how EC look and their fluff (for the most part) and I really like the color scheme.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

yeah I do too, they're probably my favourite of the traitor legions but I don't want to play a weaker army in 30k as well. (I know the SW codex isn't weak but it is outclassed by most of the new codecies). I still might consider them though, the alpha legion are pretty tempting though seeing as they are chaos that want to destroy chaos (malal anyone?).

The way i see it mate, you should probably think what sort of units you'd like.

For example, i know i don't like a lot the tanks and transports (except for the Sicaran), so i had to choose a footslogging legion to stick to the fluff. I could have of course chosen Ultramarines and get only footies, but Death Guard was looking cool, so i went with them.

So i guess you should really narrow it down by fluff, colours, primarchs (if that's your thing), special units and eventually RoW.

Well I've narrowed it down to space wolves and alpha legion.

I would like to use the minis in plain old 40k so space wolves seem like the obvious choice given my established collection, plus they are my favourite of all the legions.

However alpha legion have caught my interest as their motives to turn to chaos are rather interesting, plus their use of subterfuge and disguise is well represented in the game (being able to borrow a unit from another legion is pretty neat).

at the moment I'm leaning towards alpha legion as they have their own rules available and character model as well as transfers/shoulder pads/torsos, sadly the wolves don't have their own yet, but I could field them using the crusade list. neither have primarchs yet but I expect both of them to be very impressive indeed. I'm still not sure though so any further advice?

Of those two, I would go with the Space Wolves. You can even use some of your preexisting 40K models in the army. The problem with Alpha Legion is that they're too popular. It seems like everyone plays, or wants to play, Alpha Legion.

I'm starting my 30k army with the BaC box set as well, but as I already have a sizable beginning to a 40k Salamanders army that is what I am going with.

Otherwise, I picked Word Bearers on your poll question. I think they have pretty decent rules combined with the fact that you can take Daemons as allies. Look like they would be a cool army to play!

Try Night Lords, the Betrayal at Calth sit gives you the models to do a pretty decent Terror Assalt list with 3 Terror Squads, a deep striking terminator squad led by a Praetor and a Contemptor.

Hold off on the wolves unless you like doing conversions, they will look and play very little like the 40k version.

which 40k models can be used in 30k? I thought that the point of 30k was that it doesn't use GW models (apart from the new BaC ones). although alpha legion are pretty popular I've never seen a game of 30k at my local GW so I would likely be the only one playing them (if I decide to), I have seen death guard and salamanders minis which has turned me away from them as I know both are quite popular.

I know they will play differently as not all their fancy toys and freeze rays get made until way after the heresy but how will they look different?? I know they have a darker livery but they still wear all the fenrisian iconography, if I do wolves I plan on playing them as 13th great company as SOME have returned from the eye of terror and the 13th great company use all the pre-heresy livery and squad markings.

Do Alpha Legion. Iirc, in Prospero Burns they have a pretty violent rivalry with the 5th. Perfect for a heresy campaign, and fluffy too. AL are also super OP, and they can basically take the other guy's units. Overall, a really fun army.
