ok so I'm hoping to get into 30k with the Betrayal at Calth set due to it's amazing value and I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me patch this up.

3X 10 man tactical squads with a missile launcher and power fist for the seargent.

5 cataphractii termies all with lightning claws

all the weapons are not fixed so if I need to change them I can, only the two HQ's weapons are fixed. I'm hoping someone will be able to advise me on what to equip to my models as I don't currently have the 30k books (hence no points, although I read somewhere that this is roughly 1000 pts), I'm not looking to buy any more models yet unless there aren't 1000 pts here.

Ok, a few things first: 1) what legion are you going to run, and 2) are you running tactical marines or veteran tactical marines? If I were you, I would get battlescribe and the Horus heresy data file so you can look at the rules and costs a bit better.

Running what you listed (with some light liberties) would net you a 1450 point list

1 terminator Praetor (captain, needed to take rights of war)
right of war: Pride of the legion (makes terminators and veteran tactical squads troops)
1 Centurion (can be any of the consoles, doesn't NEED to be a chaplain)

3 10-man veteran tactical squads w/ Missile launcher w/ suspensor web (move and shoot) and plasma gun; srgts. w/ power fist, combi weapon, and artificer armor. These Guys MUST take 1 of 5 special rules.

5 Terminators w. lightning claws (can work, but I would go with power fists, 1 chain fist, 1 heavy flamer); Srgt w/ grenade harnes

From the calth box, the only things I would do different from what you listed was make the terminators P fists (AP: 2 goodness ), and instead of the chaplain, I would run him as a master of signals. PM me if you have any more "rules-specific" questions, but I hope this helps

wow, thanks that's very very helpful, I didn't know BaC netted as much as 1450 pts that's pretty good seeing as most boxed sets by gw give nowhere near as much. will have a look at battlescribe, is there a pc version as my mobile is full?
I'm currently looking to use them as either alpha legion or space wolves (leaning towards wolves at the moment)
I would be more than happy to change the weapons on the termies (or anything for that matter as I haven't bought the set yet) as I'd rather have a playable list than something I threw together, what do you recommend giving the dread?
if I'd need a master of signals I'd be more than happy to pick one up as the set for him is pretty good value (2 minis for £12 each, same as gw prices tbh).

yup, battlescribe has a PC version, it's the only one I use XD. BaC can net even more, probably around 1650 with the right loadout.

Wolves would be fun, however their rules aren't out yet, and won't be untill later this year, maybe (damn forge world pushing off my thousand sons grumble grumble). The issue with the Alpha legion is 1) painting them, 2) they have some complicated rules, but it opens you to taking specials from any other army, which is awesome, and 3) they don't really have their models out yet, only the rules.

For the contemptor, because of how it comes in the box, the easiest/best loadout would be a kheres and power fist, though if your good at converting and can get a hold of another kheres arm, dual kheres assault cannons are really strong on the contemptor.

yeah I found the pc version, although I am quite confounded by how I'm supposed to download lists for it. rather embarrassing to be honest.
I take it that if you used a 1650 list with BaC that it may be rather unbalanced.
I could take wolves using a crusade list though right? shame they haven't got any models yet though. if I can't use them yet, I guess I could play them as alpha legion in disguise although the alpha legion colour scheme is very pretty......

sadly my modeling skills aren't great enough for me to do a second kheres on the dread, besides the wolves prefer a good scrap.

the wolves have no legion rules yet, however, that's only a small issue With the praetor, you can opt to take a right of war, if you follow the RoW's limits. the RoW's themselves are free, but usually have heavy limitations.

also out of curiosity I noticed that if I take a chaplain there is no option to give him a crozuis does it come as part of the 35 point upgrade?

here's how it looks:

chaplain 85pts
praetor with cataphractii armour, combi bolter, chain fist 150pts (RoW making the vet tacs and termies troops)

Elites
contemptor dread with kheres assault cannon 190pts
5 man terminator squad 3 with power fists, 1 with chain fist, 1 with heavy flamer. sergeant has a grenade harness. 250pts
3x 10 man veteran tac squads with missile launcher and suspensor web, plasma gun. sergeant has artificer armour, combi weapon and power fist 275pts per sqaud.

this works out at 1500pts exactly.

I realized that if I take a master of signals I can't take power fists on the termies as they are a 5 point upgrade (vanilla termies come with power weapons) so the chaplain seems to fit better with the list.

Looks pretty good, and with the croszius, it just falls under power weapons since it is only a power maul.

gaaaah, foget custodes I just wanna see the model for leman russ, cause if the artwork is anything to go by.....wanna see sanguinius too although I bet we'll be waiting years before we see him oh well, am still gonna do wolves cause they're my favourite, plus my main army could always use reinforcing.

just realised I need to add in a plasma pistol for the chaplain as well, I might as well make it a 1550 list and add the crozius and the extra power fist for the termies which brings me up to 1535pts. what should I add for the last 15 points? should I take extra armor on the dread, give it a new inbuilt weapon, give it a havoc launcher, give the praetor an iron halo, or mastercraft a weapon of his?
