Hello. I'm new to the game. I purchased this army. Any advice regarding this army? What should I buy to fill holes? Late War. Is this list good for mid-war?

My army features:

5x M4A1 Sherman tanks
5x M4A1-76mm Sherman Tanks
5x Stuart Light Tanks
3x M8 Gun tanks
2x M10 Tank Destroyers plus jeeps
3x Priest Armored Artillery plus command
3x Mortar Half tracks
1x Platoon of Armor Rifle Infantry with 5 half tracks and 5 bazooka
1x Platoon or US paratroopers

Thanks in advance.

Seems like a decent enough list for a start. I'd recommend playing a few games with it and getting a feel for what your local meta is like. Once you know what your usual opponents are running, then you can start to tweak the list to add things that fit better with what you're usually facing.

You will want to get 2 more M10s don't ever run them less than full strength. Also an AOP and then your good for a decent armour list. Just play around and slowly tweet to fit but 2 m10s and an AOP are a must the rest is personal style

Get two more M!0s so you have a full platoon.

You need an Armored Cavalry Recon patrol w M8 armored car and 2 jeeps.

I also recommend an armored mortar platoon with 3 M4 MMCs

Here's a sample list with what you have

He has an armored mortar platoon. That's what the three mortar halftracks are.

So far have had a few skirmishes with the tanks. Just trying to get an understanding of the rules.

Soon we may play with the infantry platoons.

One thing that confuses me. As I said above, I purchased an existing set with 1x Platoon of Armor Rifle Infantry and 1x Platoon of US paratroopers. To my eye, most of the four soldier bases look the same. Mostly riflemen. Are these bases interchangeable or is there some way to distinguish the two platoons. In other words, if I only want to include my Rifle Infantry platoon in my army list, can I pick the appropriate number of four base units without worrying about whether they really came from one set or the other?

There might be minor differences in the uniforms. Aside from that, there's no reason why you can't use them interchangeably. And most opponents won't even care about the hypothetical uniform differences.

I think that there have been changes between the metal and plastic models.

Can someone please take the time and list the units that are currently required for the following platoons?

1x Platoon of Armor Rifle Infantry with 5 half tracks and 5 bazooka units
1x Platoon of U.S. paratroopers

Thanks in advance.

The armoured rifles come in a box with all the infantry and half tracks. The paratroopers you can get in a while comp y box set or just a blister of a platoon

That might be. If someone has the time, please list the units within the platoons. I need to know what to include in the two platoons. I purchased an existing army set. But, the packaging wasn't included, so I don't have specific lists.

Without a list, you can't say what platoons have in them; very few platoons in FoW are always made up of a certain number of a certain thing. Platoons can also differ in composition depending on the list they're in and the book the list is from. Nobody here can really help you until you find a list to use--at which point, you wouldn't need the help.

We can help you decide what lists you might want to use, but that's about it right now.

Oh, okay. That is helpful. I thought that the units in the Rifle platoon box or Paratroopers out of Open Fire were what constituted usable platoons within an army list. It is good to know that there is flexibility. Thank you.

What you get in the boxes will be the core of platoons, and usually contains at least the minimum number of units you can field, but yeah, the contents of a box or blister isn't precisely what you will be using.

Your US Paras in Late War, for example, have a bare-minimum load-out of 1 small command base, 6 medium bases in 3 squads of 2, a small 60mm mortar base, and a small bazooka base. In some books, that's all you get. No options. In others, however, options you can add are usually restricted to adding a further 1 medium rifle/mg base to each squad, and/or replacing the command rifle/mg base with smgs. Depending on the list, you can even get an option to upgrade the command base to have a panzerfaust, an option the model for which is only available in a separate blister, or by trying to add it yourself to an existing model.

The Armoured Rifle platoon is easier, in that it has very few options, but those options can differ from list to list, even in the same book. Usually you'll only get the option to replace the bazooka in the platoon HQ with a 37mm gun, but some lists don't give you that option, instead allowing you to replace the AA-MG on the half-tracks with a .50cal AA-MG. You can even end up with armoured rifle platoons in the same list having different load-outs; one may have swapped the bazooka for the 37mm gun if they had that option, or one may have more .50cals than another if they instead had that option.

Whilst boxes generally give you a good idea of what a platoon will contain, it won't necessarily be exactly what the box gives you, and you do usually have a degree of control.

Since you've got a box of armoured rifle and some OF! paras, I take it you might be looking at an Armoured Rifle Company? The only Armoured Rifles that also allow Paras are the 4th and 7th Armoured Rifles from Blood, Guts, and Glory.

That said, there's also a Para list in Nuts! that allows you take an Armoured Rifle platoon, so you can expand in either way and still use the left-over platoon you didn't choose.

Blood, Guts, and Glory has also been one of the better army books for US tanks (again, 4th and 7th), in case you want to expand into those, and also has a Tank Destroyer list. Nuts! only has Airborne Engineers (two lists, one with para support and one with glider support), a para list, and a glider list for Americans.

Thank you for taking the time to post that lengthy informative post. What I have is in the first post of this thread. I am unable to characterize my units or how I can play them at the moment. But, as I play, I will come back here and post thoughts and questions.

I have also ordered other well-painted units and will edit the first post once they arrive.

When you get around to painting them up, you'll be able to see the differences. Paratroopers had some very different equipment and their uniforms were (supposedly) a different color. There's been a lot of debate as to what exact color it was, but I know it wasn't what the standard GI's were wearing.
