Hello all,

I would like some help with regards to a recent idea I have had. So I am currently set to get married this August to my long time gf and as a keen supporter of me and my hobby, I would like to contribute by creating/painting our wedding cake topper. I think if done correctly she would really enjoy it and I would get to see another smile from the pretty lady.

Now I have seen some awesome toppers involving zombies however she cannot stand them to the point where my three zombicide boxes are relegated to the attic except for when shes out and my friends are round.

Such as these
http://www.gardenninja.com/commissions/643-2/

I have also searched the googles for more ideas but I am struggling to find something suitable without too much conversion (my conversion skills are rudimentary)

Any models, ideas or even contacts would be much appreciated.

I too am getting married in August, and am making my wedding cake. Honestly, I'd say don't do the zombie/model thing. If she isn't into it herself, it won't be something nice for her, it'll be for you, no matter how well you try to wrap it up in good intentions. You are lucky she supports your hobby, so why not put those skills to good use in another way? Try to find a traditional cake topper that resembles her even a little bit, then repaint them to a beautiful standard, so that they really look like the two of you. That would be something meaningful for her. Otherwise the best reaction you are likely to get is an "I'm tolerating this because it's my wedding day" smile that you will see straight through.

Hey congrats JamesY

Your right about the zombie thing, I wasnt intending on going down that route at all, it was just a general concept I thought was well executed.

Zombie theme is definately out, Sci Fi is probably out depending on execution, and not fitting with our theme.

She is into her brothers grimm fairy tales you see, and our invitations were fairytale themed. Ideally I had in mind some form of kneeling knight with a standing princess such as hasslefrees miranda
http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=miranda~hfh030&category=fantasy-%26%0D%0Asteampunk~fantasy-humans

The problem at the moment is finding a kneeling knight at the same scale.

The main idea of this thread was to see what my options were to begin with.

Last thing i want is to waste efforts and be in the dog house again

Ah that's an altogether different idea! Might be worth commissioning a sculpt for the knight? That way you know the scale will be right. Might be worth putting up a post asking for quotes and see if anyone is able to do it. If I see a suitable model though I will post a link.

Congratulations to you too!

Just remember it's her wedding not yours. Your better off asking her what she wants. I let my wife pick out the cake and topper I just paid the bill.

True enough Chute its not exclusively my wedding, its ours and that is something I have been mulling over quite a bit recently.

If its a poor concept I'm not happy with then it will stay in my draw for a later valentines day present. But I want to at least research and investigate the idea before I ignore it completely.

Our wedding budget is small, and she loves homemade or personal items such as this. To come from me rather than some random manufacturer is a lot better no ?

Highlighted pertinent parts.

Common interests are okay to build a theme around, but only if both of you are totally into something together. And only if your future wife agrees.

IME What you think your wife would like on her wedding day is totally at odds to what she actually wants. So ask her if its okay.

Saw your post above. As a valentines gift its a great idea, better yet as an unexpected gift.

If you're into building the topper, why not theme it around a memory of you two together?
Stuff like... On a bench, sitting on a Ferris wheel seat, together at the beach, or a game you watched.
You could make both of you in your own clothes, tuck a little backpack of your games with some bits spilling out somewhere on there, and make sure you hide some things of hers around there as well. A favourite memory box, a photo album, a console or her pets.

I'm sure the right ideas will come to you. I won't say "it's her day", I'll say it's both of your day, and you can easily look toward yourselves for the inspiration.

If she's happy with mini's on the cake, then make up a shortlist of nice bride/groom style ones and let her choose.

There's loads of fantasy maidens and steampunk stuff out there.

For instance, I was using a reaper maiden and a Warlord drunken Highlander (we're scottish, so a kilt seemed fitting).

Bear in mind that the cake is a massive centrepiece, quite important to the bride and will be seen by all of the guests (including your grans).

Of course, if you get a grooms cake (it's an American thing, aparently), then you can get a bit more freedom.

For ours, we ended up with a formal cake with a doulton figurine on the top, and a grooms cake with a lego couple on it. Everyone was happy.

Just was about to mention a grooms cake- you can totally nerd that out as much as you want, since it's your own personal piece of the wedding. I had a dinosaur cake for mine.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feed back, was looking again today and finally stumbled across this from Dark Sword Miniatures

What do you think ?

I used old WW2 miniatures in 54mm and sculpted my hair onto the officer (we're both have a historical background, are into period clothing and swing dancing... so very situational). It was a "V-Day celebration" type of box.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Those Dark Swords minis are very cool for a cake topper.

I think you'll find he said it's "her wedding" and "not yours", which was quite a funny way of pointing out that weddings are usually a much bigger deal for the bride. I think it would certainly be a wise man who kept that in mind. I agree with JamesY that you should bring your painting skills, but probably leave anything "miniature" related at home. Most miniatures are going to be a bit too small for a wedding cake anyway, and they're likely to have things like guns and action poses, which wouldn't really be appropriate. I think "traditional" is probably a safe bet if you can't find something that represents you both.

I like the DarkSwordMiniatures couple!

Alternatively: Have you talked to odinsgrandson? He regularly sculpts wedding toppers for geeks, so even if you do not want to make an order with him (he is in the US), he definitely has spent a lot of thought on that subject and might be able to push you in the right direction.

Oh, and I totally agree with Chute82's sentiment: That wedding is NOT yours ("both of you"), it is HERS. Seriously, unless it was toal bonkers, do everything just the way she wants it - make it a lasting (positive) memory for her. You are generating emotional savings capital for future rough times....
