so GW's seem to be showing their age and wargames factory has some nice ones but they seem to be in about 100 pieces. mantics are so-so.
can any of you suggest some cool looking skeletons with bonus points for less pieces?

I think id like to start a small aos undead force themed around skellies.

thanks

on a side note... has reaper gone to all resin? I was checking out their skeletons and they look like some sort of white material.

GW skeletons have always bugged me. Their shoulders are not at all human!

The reaper ones will be bonesium, the bones range are white flexible plastic. I'd avoid the skeletons as the weapons will bend and sag, and although easy to fix, they tend to bend again in storage.

Came here to say this.

Also Mantic's make for a lot of variety as they're very customisable. For big hordes, they kill the "same pose" vibe.

Ya know bottle, I based that gw statement on a box that I've had sitting in my closet for awhile. I checked them out again and may have to reconsider.

I do not recommend the Wargames Factory Skeletons.
• Their arms and legs are very thin, and very difficult to remove from the sprue without breaking them. Even with proper clippers and great care.
• They are not easy to assemble, glue points must be flattened out with a razor cutter in order to have enough contact area for a strong joint.
• The thin-ness of the legs makes them weak structurally. To the point where if I pound on the desk, you can watch them wobble to and fro.

They do look cool, but they also seem like they are going to break by just looking at them wrong. I do not believe these will stand up to being transported or gamed with for very long.

wow, that's good to know snurl, thank you.
I was kind of hesitant on thrm simply for the amount of assembly. separate feet would have driven me insane.

Never had any of those problems with mine, but to each their own.

I have several regiments of them multibased for KoW, maybe the multibasing mitigates some of the individual fragility.

Heh - I highly recommend the WGF skellies - they are quite possibly the best skeletons when it comes to using the bits and pieces for building terrain.

A friend of mine used them for a KoW unit - and modeled two of them sitting down, eating sandwiches, while the third dug up graves. (Must be union skellies.)

I am quite possibly the most unreliable person in the world when it comes to remembering to take pictures.

I bought a new camera, just before going to Gen Con....

And took two (2) pictures.

No excuse for it, either....

The Auld Grump - on the other hand, I have about two dozen pictures that I took of dilapidated buildings, to find just the one that I wanted to use for a logo....

I personally like Kings of war skeleton bodies with Vampire counts skulls and weapons. They have a very nice ragged look to them when combined that the normal VC skellies don't.

The enemies of Mankind may employ dark sciences or alien weapons beyond Humanity's ken, but such deviance comes to naught in the face of honest human intolerance back by a sufficient number of guns.

Since you're priority seems to be less pieces, the Foundry and Bronze age seem to be good options. My question would be how many? Metal skellies tend to get expensive fast when you're building lots of them.

I actually think the Mantic Skellies are quite good. They're a nice mix of customizable, but without too many parts.

Mantic skellies are also fairly sturdy - and travel well.

I don't even KNOW anymore.

I do not like that Mantic skellies all seem to have "Angry Eyes". As a radiographer, that drives me crazy.

EDIT: I have a couple handfuls of Grenadier skeletons from the '80s, such as their Mammoths and the "Raiders of the Undead" boxes. Excellent sculpts. Sadly, Mirliton doesn't seem to have many of the molds for them, just the less good skeletons from other sculptors.

yeah, theres a lot of factors involved as you can need a bunch if your summoning etc...
those bronze age ones are great looking. I wonder though how much of it is the paint job making them look better?

Heh, I will grant you the angry eyes - when I first saw the models, I knew that they had been sculpted by Naismith.

His Citadel and Grenadier skellies have the same expressive bone structure. (Bones not generally being very good at doing anything but smile....)

I'm having the same problem.

I want some simple skeletons that do not have a specific period stamped all over them, and/or they don't have spiked "Evilness" on everything they wear/hold.

Hmmm, if you do not mind older metal sculpts - and given that you mentioned the old Grenadier, that would seem to be the case, then you may want to look at the old Ral/Partha/Iron Wind Metals/Ral Partha Europe Fantasy Army skellies - which come from a wide period of time. (And suffered from scale creep over the years.)
