So I still have a few bucks left over from Christmas and want to put together a small Patrol force (using the Azyr comp). I'm holding off on Beastmen until they get their update, so I'm looking for a force with relatively new plastic kits. I've narrowed it down to either Savage Orcs or a skeleton-heavy Vampire Counts army. Any suggestions are welcome.

Savage Orc Patrol
20 Points

++HEROES++

1 Savage Orc Warboss @ 3 points
*Weapons: Stonecleava

Savage Orc Shaman @ 2 points
*Weapons: Totemic Bone Staff
* Spells: Arcane Bolt, Mystic Shield and Foot of Gork

++UNITS++

6 Savage Orc Boar Boyz @ 3 points
*Weapons: Flint Spears and Crude Spears

6 Savage Orc Boar Boyz @ 3 points
*Weapons: Flint Spears and Crude Shields

10 Savage Orc Boyz @ 2 points
*Weapons: Stone Choppas and Crude Shields

5 Savage Orc Arrer Boyz @ 1 point
*Weapons: Feral Bows and Extra Arrers

5 Savage Orc Arrer Boyz @ 1 point
*Weapons: Feral Bows and Extra Arrers

++MONSTERS++

Giant @ 5 points
* Weapons: Massive Club

Grand Total: 20 points

Although I prefer Orcs over Savage Orcs, outside of Boar Boyz the Orc miniatures are starting to look a bit dated.

Vampire Counts Patrol

1 Wight King @ 2 points

10 Crypt Guard @ 6 points
*Weapons: Wight Blades and Crypt Shields

20 Skeleton Warriors @ 4 points
*Weapons: Ancient Spears and Crypt Shields

20 Skeleton Warriors @ 4 points

3 Spirit Hosts @ 2 points
*Weapons: Spectral Claws and Daggers

3 Spirit Hosts @ 2 points

Grand Total: 20 points

I have a good background idea for this list (think Snow White and the Huntsman with a Lahmian Vampire instead of the Wicked Witch ). How does a Vampire Counts army do without magic?

I'd say go for the Vampire Counts for now - looks like a more fun army to play and face and you should hold off on the orcs until more news about them in AoS exists.

Want to play a balanced Age of Sigmar?

The Age of Sigmar Project Points Cost!

Points cost for ALL armies, including unit upgrades and special abilities!

I was never crazy about the gaint to be honest.

Also you may want to look into Beastmen. There were rumors they were be discontinued towards the end of 2016, not sure how true this was.

I would say go vamp counts, but Azyr comp is unnecessarily and excessively harsh on the undead, particularly skeletons. Every 'horde' unit in the game gets bonuses for large unit size, but only skeletons and state troops are heavily punished by the Azyr comp rules as a result. Skeletons doubly so with our banners - critical for conveying the undead theme - being charged extra as well.

grave guard also arbitrarily cost more than the nigh identical (if anything, superior, due to better shields) tomb guard.

It's kind of a mess.
