Plasma pistols are massively overpriced, you might want to avoid them. And frankly anything that needs to eat plasma you are going to grav to death.

What would you suggest instead of Plasma Pistols?

Thanks

Well, you have 90 point sunk into them. Do you have a game planned at 800 points? Or was it just a easy number? Because if you build to 750 you could replace them with flamers on the marines, and still have points left over for meltabombs.

Upgrading assault sarges to vets is a good use of points.

Bumping the devs up to full 10 man squads, so you can combat squad out and hit 2 targets might be worth it.

It might sound strange at first but I'd suggest that you consider increasing the dev squads to 10 men strong. That way you can combat squad them and delete even more units on your alpha strike. And as said previously, plasma pistols are not really worth it, flamers are what you want here.

Edit: I guess all of this was said before. Great minds think alike, right?

No, but I want to have a couple of really small formations that I can play short games. Here's why... I would like to, if possible, play more than one game per week. My local GW shop is where I will play, but they are only open Tuesday - Thursday 12pm - 7pm and Friday and Saturday 12pm - 8pm. I can't get there before 5:30pm, so I'm looking for something that has easy and quick setup, would finish quickly, and quick to pack up to use during the week where maybe Friday and Saturday would be the days when I could bring out my bigger armies (1500, 2000, and above). I'm thinking just a Skyhammer and the Tau Optimised Stealth Cadre. Both are at or under 800 points and should be fairly quick to setup, play, and pack up. That's why I've kept the points low.

I can totally understand the need for a small list for a quick game. I can’t normally get to my FLGS until 6, and some of the regulars need to be out by 8, so not a lot of time for large games. I just don’t hear much about 800 point games. Mostly 500, 750, 1k, 1,250, 1.5k, 1,850, and 2k+. There might be different norms at your local stores. When I pack an army, I normally make a number of lists, with different modules I can add/subtract. Like a core 1k list, with a 250 and a 500 point formation. This gives me a lot of flex depending on the pickup game I can find. I’ll usually toss a few extra things into spare slots of my foam on the off chance someone wants a larger game.

For pickup games that I've seen in the past, people just agree on a certain number of points and play it that way. But, I agree with you. It needs to be a little more flexible. That said, if I was going to play an 800 point game, I'd probably just ask around in the local shop's chat room to see if anyone would want to play an 800 point game first. 750 may not be a bad goal to shoot for as well. That's what I'm trying to get to the the Tau Optimised Stealth Cadre.
