Hey guys now i have my own imperial fists successor but im considering sending them renegade as i am a filthy heretic at heart. I plan to keep using SM models and rules for them as i dont see them full on embracing the gods however im curious how do renegade armies show the fact they are renegades?

Following Chaos? Or just going against the Imperium? Chaos is easy to show, usually a change in marking or physical signs of corruption. Throw in a few spikes. Paint their armor to show lack of care in maintenance. Swap out some bits for some chaos ones. For anti Imperium, I'm guessing here, perhaps some non standard imperial parts. Modify weapons and vehicles with some imperial guard parts. To show your chapter isnt getting resupplied or proper repairs. Paint them proper, but then paint them so their chapter markings have been crossed out or defaced.

"Accept that Tzeentch has a place for all of us in his grand scheme, and be happy in the part you have to play." "This is Chaos. We don't "ka-frickin'-boom" here."

My idea for them is they are chaos/renegade but hiding towards the outer edge of the imperium due to being fleet based and are still getting recruits. Equipment is justified by they have "tricked " a forgeworld into giving them stuff

Imperial iconography is typically scratched out, various armour mods, taking of trophies and other such activities that allow the marines to be more individualistic typically. Perhaps weather the armour to show it's harder to maintain without the Imperium providing resources.

Changing the Chapter's name and iconography is fairly common (See the Astral Claws/Red Corsairs for an example).

Beyond that not much changes for renegades unless they go full Chaos, then you're looking at mutations and the like.

I am thinking of sending them kind of full.chaos but not having any physical mutations yet due to they havent been chaos for long.

Ok so my thinking is
The chapter has been serving the imperium.faithfully until one day while putting down a rebellion the chapter is giving misleading info which means they accidently end up killing the inhabitants of a loyal world.
However on said world chief librarian finds a few tomes which unknown to him are tomes of sorcery
Over the next 50 years the corruption slowly spreads through the librarius to the rest of the chapter including the reclusiarch and the chapter master.
Chapter master sends those who hes sure wont turn on a suicide misson against a ork waghh. Just before they declare themselves heretics they trick a foolish magos and planetary govenor into sending them geneseed new recruits and new equipment.
Hearing that my chapters turned a combined force of IF CF and Black Templars hunts my chapter down who have set a trap for them on a world close to cadia having turned the world heretic a daemonic horde is summoned causing the combined imperial forces to retreat. During this my chapter slips away.
Summoning a daemonic herald they learn that Abbadon is soon to launch the 13th black crusade and the chapter master promises his forces will support Abbadon

Pretty much this. When you forsake the Imperium you also blaspheme the symbols you earned working for it, and as marines are often quite literal this means they might physically deface the battle honors or paint them over. Ofc, seeing as there are superstitions about the Power Armor's machine spirit maybe being offended at such actions it's also entirely possible the marines would just let any symbols etc wear off in combat instead of doing anything to them. So the weathered armor look might be a good idea - the marines hope all the symbols will be worn away in battle and the machine spirit just forgets them, and then they can paint new things on the armor...
