I recently needed lots of rocks for lots of bases, and most rocks are not really that good at being adhered to anything, so I found a cheap and easy way.

step 1
gather your sprue, you will need a bit of it.

Step 2
Chop it into reasonably small pieces.

Step 3
put the little pieces into a jar with a high percentage acetone solution.

step 4
wait about 15 hours. it should be very soft by then.

step 5
scrape out the amount you need, and begin shaping it to how you would like it to be. it does not easily stay smooth, it forms small wrinkles and cracks.

step 6
after about 6 hours, it will be as hard as it originally was, and if you sculpted it well, it will look really good.

* due to acetone being extremely flammable (number one arson accelerant) , releasing flammable gases, being an eye and skin irritant, proper safety measures such as being in a well ventilated area would greatly reduce the chance of you being poisoned.. or suffocating.... or spontaneously combusting... so just don't do anything stupid

That's a really interesting process. Call me crazy, but couldn't you just use a small pebble to avoid the whole chemical exposure thing?

Yes, but this would allow for more thin rock protrusions, or a melting effect,

Looks good it also gives me something to do with my old bits of sprue that are lying all over my room

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind.
