Hey guys in combat phase, have any of you guys ever played it by putting your models on to the opponents models base, to pile in as much as you can? I never did it before, but a friend brought it during our last game and said a lot of people do it that way.

i think I got this answered on a different forum already. The person said it depends if you are measuring by model or by base.

If you play purely measuring from models, I suppose it is acceptable in the rules. But I think it would scorch most hobbyists' hearts to see models treated that way. The sensible approach, in my opinion, is to not overlap bases.

Per the AoS rules, it would be acceptable. But yeah, don't do it.
Best you switch to base-to-base measuring, like most comps for AoS do.

No, having multiple models overlap bases is not ok under AoS rules. The rules don't mention whether or not you can do it. So it falls under the most important rule (about what makes the most sense or has the most fun). Its pretty clear that overlapping bases does not make sense and is not about having fun. So you can't do it according to the most important rule.

Just as an aside, I've been playing wargames for over thirty years, and I can't think of a single system that encouraged or permitted stacking bases on each other. Many of the systems were totally silent on the having a rule on it, but everyone understood that you don't stack bases.

Go for it, the most important rule as written in the rules is to have fun, talk with your opponent, and if you cant decide then roll a dice.

The rules state that you measure from the model so the base has no part except to hold the model up and look pretty. This is clear, I myself measure from base to base but in AOS yeah I have had instances with the bigger models where i did place a model ontop of another and my opponent was cool with it so we rolled on.

30+ years of gaming or not that is a pretty easy and clear call based on the rules as written though. This is AOS, not another tabletop game.

I play model to model alot,we just have a simple house rule-

Models in base to base contact are always considered to be within 1/2 inch of each other

Unless the base is so big that range to the model on it becomes a problem, it shouldn't matter much.
If the base is that big I would ask the owner to allow either my models on the base or that I measure to the base.

Base touching fine but over lapping...no. i would consider it rude, and do you really want to screw up my nice bases?

This
I spend a lot of time making my bases (tufts, sand, cork, icycles and so on..) and i`m afraid about piling other model on my precious "mini-diorama".

We measure base-to-base and don't do this.

When we measured model-to-model we counted base contact as being within combat range for attacks (i.e. .5").

Seems like a few of us simply switch to base to base measuring.

My phrase for playing at the house is

"For fists or faces, we measure from the bases"

Silly and catchy and no one has ever had to ask "where should i measure from" haha
