Hello everyone !

I'm building my first ever Warhammer 40k army using my favourite faction the IG. What would be a good competitive army that could win me games/tournaments ?

IG just doesn't win tournaments anymore. If you want to keep using IG models but want to at least have a chance of winning tournaments you should take a look at the FW Renegades list instead.

There must be some way they can win ? Or is 7th ed so unbalanced ?

Its just the way this edition works with the current guard codex. Guards strengths lie in their vehicles and disposable troops, both which lack heavily in a meta where high strength low AP weapons are the norm.

My IG have recently joined the ranks of Chaos as the emperor has not been so kind to them since 7th.

Its excessively unbalanced especially in the Tournament scene which you seem to want to be a part of.

best thing you might be able to do is go into renegade ig. they have a lot better assortment of toys to play with. and its a kick ass book too.

The best IG stuff is a hybrid of mech guard and artillery units. The main artillery units you want are Wyverns and Heavy Artillery Carriages from Forge World. Those should take up two of your heavy support slots (at least one Wyvern and One squad of Carriages) The Wyvern will kill just about all dismounted infantry. The carriages are nice because the rules for unit types artillery are idiotic and make them very survivable. They also allow for orders as well a Str 9 or 10 low AP blast that is ordinance and ignore cover is pretty awesome for disabiling annoying jinking vehicles.

You need mounted infantry to score. That means Taurox and Chimera filled with Veterans or Infantry squads. A good mix of the two vehicles is nice. The Taurox and Chimera are both crap, but both have merits that you are forced to use. I like to put Veterans with either 3xMelta or 3xPlasma inside.

Large infantry blobs don't fair well unless they are behind aegis lines. You mostly take those for heavy weapons and as a back field area holder. HWS are expensive and die easily hence the blob still.

Tank Commanders with Pask in a Punisher and a buddy tank like an eradicator is pretty solid killy unit. Leman Russes are kind of crappy, but can do the job.

A solid list might look like:

HQ: 1 CCS
1 Punisher Pask buddy tank squad

Elite: Everything here sucks. A base cost squad of ratlings isnt bad because its so cheap but usually does nothing. Ogryns and Bullgryns are unreliable and overpriced. 9 out of 10 times you should be taking Veterans over Stormtroopers

Troops:
3-4 mech guard types -
30-50 man blob with as many autocannons as you can take

Fast Attack:
Vendettas and Vultures
Maybe a Valkyrie with a squad inside
Sentinels are meh

Heavy Support:
Wyvern Squad
Earthshaker/Medusa Carriage squad
Manticore or Leman Russ squad

Fortification:
Aegis Defense Line

IG don't win tournaments as they are one of the worst books. The top 5 worst codices are 1. Dark Eldar 2. Chaos Space marine 3. Harlequins 4. Imperial Guard. 5. Orks.

Imperial Armour 13 has all the rules, Renegades are a super variable army with about 50 ways to play (each warlord changes how you deploy, shoot, and have endless waves of men) or the Siege of Vraks book, which also has less rules but an awesome campaign in it. The only downside of Renegades?
1. Filthy Heretics (but you dont have to play them that way)
2. Everything is BS2 base, but you can upgrade
3. Books are pricey (but at least you get your moneys worth in quality, fluff, and rules)

17,000 points (Valhallan)
10,000 points
6,000 points (Order of Our Martyred Lady)
Proud Countess of House Terryn hosting 7 Knights, 2 Dominus Knights, and 8 Armigers
Stormcast Eternals: 7,000 points

Things that I've found effective in my Guard:

Thudd Guns - Love these things. They're artillery so you can give them orders
Wyverns - of course. I think I like Thudd Guns better though for cheaper
Yarrick - Solid Character, can attach him to units, hard to kill, and can give orders.
Demo Mech Vets - Demolitions is so much fun. I had one mechanized vet squad with demolitions take out a renegade Baneblade
Conscripts - Cheap throw away unit but great for an assault with a Priest for fearless and zealot. Took out some D-Weapon Battery Artillery in a tournament with these bad boys
IA Artillery Guns - Medusa specifically if you can get'em. Mainly because you can give that str 10 AP2 pie plate ignores cover.
Blobs with Heavy weapons teams inside - Great to give orders, take wounds, and take out targets if need be
Aegis Defense Line - Love the thing a lot.
The Emperor's Wrath Formation - You can give your artillery tanks orders. Ignores cover Basilisk.
Deathstrike Missile - Because it's Fun.

I've had some success with Leman Russ against opponents that aren't expecting Leman Russ because the Internet tells everyone Leman Russ are bad. As such, I've had some success with them, specifically in formations.

What are nids, inquisition, SoB, storm troops and codex dread knight? Srsly. Btw, guard aren't CSM bad, they're just not great.

Sisters of Battle are actually okay, as long as you think money is something that grows on trees and have great conversion skills as well.

In all honesty, the best army you can make with IG is:

> Take a CCS with Master of Ordnance, and a bunch of meltaguns
> Take one Veteran squad, also with meltaguns.
> Use as an allied detachment to pretty much anything else.

If you ever do consider taking a guard blob, always remember to take a priest or two, they are INVALUABLE I found for myself, since they make the blob so much harder to shift and rerollable wounds when you get into certain combats if someone decides to charge them. Also flamers are rather nice (Having 4D3 Flamer shots never hurt) and I found having at least one source of divination inside is great as 4 rerollable lascannon/autocannons guns is great! If you have the points, poweraxes and melta bombs can be useful.

Like Selym said, melta guns and Master of Ordnance are good, and an astropath is pretty good (Extra warp charge and Psychic shriek)!

I found using Guard as just lots of cheap wounds and objective campers as their best use. Had a doubles with a SM mate, and they can take a lot of hits, not throw out too much, and just uses marines or anything else as the main hitters!

Ignoring the fact that IG are middle to bottom tier currently, I suggest you worry more about choosing something you enjoy painting than being so concerned about being tournament ready.

It's your first jump into 40k, see if you like it first.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...
