Hello DakkaDakka!

I have been away from modeling & painting 40k for a while. Due to some health issues preventing me from attending school, I have decided to jump back in! My first army was a Black Templar successor chapter that I created. However, I have now turned to the dark side, and am beginning my chaos warband. Although, I started 40k during 4th ed., I have always loved the "Eye of Terror" supplement - especially the Lost and the Damned. My goal is to recreate a Lost and the Damned army using the Chaos Space Marine, Crimson Slaughter, Daemons, & Astra Militarum Codices. This is very ambitious, so I will be starting with CSM & Daemons.

Aside from basing my army around the Lost and the Damned, I have a basic idea/theme for my warband. Originally, I was going to go with the Word Bearers which, I see, as the chaos equivalent of Black Templars (awesome in and of itself). However, using the Crimson Slaughter codex, I cannot take VotLW, and I did not feel right using Word Bearers without VotLW. As you all may have guessed, I am a devoted son of Dorn - even though I have gone to the ruinous powers - and I despise Guilliman (NB: not the players of Guilliman of course). So, I was thinking of doing recent renegade/traitors in the 40k timeline. I was browsing the Lexicanum for ideas, and I found the Venom Thornes

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Venom_Thorns

I immediately fell in love with them! And, not having a known colour scheme, I have free reign. Graham McNeil's "Skull Harvest" has also inspired me greatly - specifically the diverse nature of Honsou's army. With the Venom Thorns being on the Eastern Fringe this could also allow me to include lesser known alien mercenaries (it seems that most of the known xenos mercenaries are near the Tau). Finally, I am an avid weird fiction reader. So, I was also thinking of including some Lovecraftian gods, for lack of a better term. This snippet from Codex: Daemons (pg. 8 of the current codex) gave me a legitimate way to include them:

Greater Daemons and Daemon Princes grown powerful enough to instil a small measure of control over their surroundings also create their abodes in the Formless Wastes - each of these small islands of structure is a petty domain in comparison to the vast realms of the Chaos Gods, but each embodies the whimsy of its creator, a small shrine or temple to a niche of belief.

Enter Shub-Niggurath, Hastur, & Azathoth!

With fluff out of the way, here is a rough draft of my army list:
Spoiler:

Kharn or Chaos Lord
Hellcult

•Hellbrute

•Cultists (35x)

•Cultists (35x)

CSM Squad (12x)
CSM Squad (12x)
Obliterators (2x)
Obliterators (2x)
Helldrake
Autocannon Predator

Herald of Tzeentch (Psy Level 3)
Herald of Tzeentch (Psy Level 3)
Herald of Tzeentch (Psy Level 3)
Horrors (11x)

Again, this is a very rough draft. However, I really want a horde of cultists. I realize that it is not the most competitive list, but I prefer friendly games. So, for this list, I need a crap-ton of cultists, and half a crap-ton of daemons for summoning. For the cultists, I like the GW models, but I do not want a load of duplicate models. So, I have been kitbashing my own cultists, and I mean a lot of kitbashing. Please pardon the crappy photos. I will be getting a light box set up soon. This is what I have so far:

I call this one Mr. Hungry

Meet Ferret Face (cookies for whomever gets that reference)

Here is my attempt at a Doghouse Gothic Marine

And the whole lot, more or less done (I am noticing some mold lines, and the first cultist needs a green stuff neck)

Any and all constructive criticism is welcome!

Then suddenly I saw it. With only a slight churning to mark its rise to the surface, the thing slid into view above the dark waters. Vast, Polyphemus-like, and loathsome, it darted like a stupendous monster of nightmares to the monolith, about which it flung its gigantic scaly arms, the while it bowed its hideous head and gave vent to certain measured sounds. I think I went mad then.

Thank you, KernelTerror! I have to admit that I am having a blast kitbashing these guys. Today, I only have one guy to show. However, I am not sure about the slug rifle. I removed the flint lock lighter (I think that that is what it is called - the rope thingie), added a bolter mag, and drilled the barrel, front & side. Please let me know what you all think or if there is a better way to make a flintlock into a 40k weapon.

Edit: first picture was a bit dark, so I took another; hopefully, it is better.

Pretty cool !
I personally would not worry too much about cultist using archaic looking weapons, depending on the history of their warband they might have crossed worlds where this is the norm.

But you did a nice job customizing it, with the mag under, it looks like he could manually fire shots the same way he would with a revolver.

Nice work, 70 cultists is going to be fun. Renegades and cultists really have individuality that ig lacks.

Reckon they could have there own book though, wanted to do a sons of sec force once a upon a time. I suppose with the choas book and counts as ig you'd be covered tough!

@KernelTerror - Thanks! I wasn't sure if I could leave them, and still be fluffy. However, I am glad that the conversion came out well!

@stonned_astartes - Thank you! I know quite a few people dread making that many models, but I am having a lot of fun. In fact, I messed around with my army list a bit more, this time using the Cult of Slaughter formation, and managed to fit in another 31 cultists! I wish that GW would bring back an official Lost and the Damned supplement; I'd even settle for a White Dwarf one. Yeah, I think Codices: CSM, Daemons, & IG will work well enough. This is probably weird, but I wish there were less 3+ armour save units, so that I could have a little bit more room for creativity! All of the meta players are facepalming now

Sadly, I only have one guy to show tonight. Here is the mutant Phulaks. He will be the bodyguard of a very important (well, if you can call a cultist champion important) model very soon.

I did get some nice tools that'll help me with my sculpting...hopefully. Tools probably cannot help with user error

Also, I just ordered some brown stuff off of amazon that should be here on Saturday (I have read that it is a bit more forgiving than green stuff). Here is an awesome DakkaDakka tutorial for sculpting that I found, and it has helped me a lot:

Sorry for the late update. I had family from out of town visiting. However, I do have some progress to show.

@evildrcheese - thank you very much! I am hoping to post updates here fairly consistently.

@JustALittleOrkish - Have a cookie (why don't we have a cookie orkmoticon?)! That show is one of my favourites. My physician's name is actually Honeycutt. He died laughing at my first appointment because I was wearing a M.A.S.H. t-shirt And thank you

@Llamahead - hahaha! I am going to use that one when I go to my FLGS. And, thank you. I have not heard of those. Would you mind posting a link?

Well, I have two cultists finished today. Here is Cicero:

and here is the mutant, Keen-eyed

Also, I have been practicing my sculpting. I went back to a few cultists, and fixed some armpit gaps as well as giving the taller one a proper neck. And, I have two more CSM legs done. Having the proper tools has made this much easier & far more enjoyable.

Lastly, here is a group shot of my fledgling rabble:

I plan on hanging out at my FLGS tomorrow, so I should have a good amount of progress to post afterward. Thank you all for looking, and any constructive comments, criticisms, & suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys! It really means a lot to me.

@KernelTerror - I owe it all to a warped mind & a huge bits box!

@stonned_astartes - the jester is easily one of my favourites. Eventually, I'd like to do my own Carnival of Chaos.

@Llamahead - those models are great! They look a lot like Redemptionists which I will definitely be using when I get back to my Templar army. Although, that might be a little hard to do since I have renounced the Corpse-Emperor and his thrice-damned son Guilliman

@kestral - I didn't realize how big they were to regular marines! They are easily a head above stock SM. I'll take a comparison shot soon. This now poses the problem of how to incorporate regular astartes legs into the army without looking weirdly. It'll probably end up in some base heightening as I really do not want to do true scale marines. Also, I hear you about the rat heads; I'm not totally sold on them myself. Originally, I was only going to do one, and then paint it to see if I liked it. But, when I saw the rat heads next to the blind flagellant head, I new that he need eyes as appendages!

I haven't been feeling well these past few days, but I was able to spend most of a day at my FLGS. Of course, I had to bring more fodder home to give to the gods of Chaos

I will probably be basing the ogres & ogryns on regular bases (they do indeed fit). I'm also thinking of making them my unique cultists (e.g., flamers, heavy stubbers, champions) in order to easily differentiate them on the tabletop. But, the rule of cool will always win, and they might just become big mutants with even bigger weapons

While I was there, I got a lot of sculpting done for my CSM. I need to finish four more left greaves, and I'll have a total of six more. However, I do have this to showoff:

I have had this thing collecting dust for years, and never had any idea what I'd do with it (but I couldn't toss it of course). My pa & I had this thing done fairly quickly - a drill press is awesome! I intend on painting the wood, but am torn on how to paint it. My pa was thinking of just matching the green. However, I was thinking of either black or maybe even hazard stripes. What do you all think? Or, if you have another idea, please let me know. Before painting the actual board, I'll do some testing on scrap pieces of wood in order to get a feel for whether or not it'll work. Hopefully, I will have a better update tomorrow. Thank you all for looking!

@ tundrafrog1124 - Thank you. I like your Lost and the Damned also. Your ogyrn & familiars are superb, and I have now put Bretonnian men-at-arm helmets on some of my stock cultists thanks to you!

@ evildrcheese - You bet! That game has taken too much of my time.

Hello everyone! Between being sick & trying to stay on top of school, I haven't had a lot of time to spend with my little heretical bunch, but I am back with a little update.

Firstly, I have begun my first foray into mold making. I noticed that one thing that the stock cultists have that mine lack are subtle details. The biggest one that struck me was the lack of chaosyness (if that's not a word, it should be). So, I cut off some of the chaos star pendants, and attempted making a mold. My first one came out surprisingly well. However, when I tried to mass produce them, they came out not so well. I think that I'll be sticking with the smaller molds, but having multiples of them. Overall, I think that the small chaos pendant will make these heretics more...heretical!

I also managed to finish another cultist who is definitely not a pyromaniac

Finally, I was able to finish my second gothic pattern CSM.

That's all I have for now, folks. Hopefully, I will be able to actually update with some regularity. As always, constructive C&C is more than welcome!

Thanks, KernelTerror! It means a lot to me.

I got a little bit more done. Priming has been on the backburner due to my airbrush putting up a fit. However, I finally have some primed, and ready to begin painting. Before I start painting cultists and CSM, I'm going to practice on some warriors of Minas Tirith since I am rusty.

What I have begun painting are some bases. I wanted to have a desert theme, and was inspired by the dry lake beds here in the Mojave Desert. These are just some test bases. I used Golden Gel's medium crackle paste, and primed with Vallejo surface primer Ger. green brown. Then I dry brushed with XV-88, followed by Ushabti Bone. I am thinking of doing a soft highlight with Ceramite white. Your thoughts? Once I have the painted model glued on the base, I'll add some static grass, and some small bushes with a few purple flowers, like my state's sagebrush. I think that will help break up the monotony of only having the cracked earth.

Finally, I have a new mutant (can't figure out a name...something cute but terrifying would be appropriate)

Thanks for looking, and have a great day blessed by the gods of chaos.

The name is very suiting, and I like it! If you all wouldn't mind naming his two other diminutive mutant brethren, I would greatly appreciate it.

I really like the one looking down sights. I had to carve out the grot head, reshape the gun, pin the ghoul head, and then sculpt the back of his head & neck. And, here's a groupshot:

Overall I am pretty pleased with them. I noticed that, in some places, my paint got a bit chunky though. Mental note - water down the paint just a little and roll back around with a third coat. It has been a while since I have painted (~6 years). Just for comparison, here is the last model I painted:

Hah, I love it already. I'll be following this one. Smallpox is a great name. You could steal from Watchmen and call another one Big Figure. How about Tall Paul? He was a friend at Uni who actually was tall! Do you like Police Academy? Hightower? I think you should have at least one absurdly tall cultist to go with the short ones. If you aren't a fan of reverse naming, but like film references, how about Short Round, from Indiana Jones?

It is good to see someone making good use of the Chaos Warrior bits too. I've always felt they would look good, but too many people use them without redoing the greaves and feet like you have.
