Subject: [1850] - Space Marines - Trying to decide between Scars or Salamanders
I'm building a single CAD list for a tournament (which allows no formations, SH, etc.)and would like some feedback on which list seems more viable. Please look them over and let me know what you think about them/what they need.
List 1 - Salamanders
Spoiler:
CAD - Salamanders
HQ Bray'arth Ashmantle - 265 Points (Goes in Pod)
Vulkan He'Stan - Warlord - 190 Points (Goes with Honor Guard)
Elites Honor Guard - Chapter Banner, 2 Power Swords, 2 Power Axes, Drop Pod - 170 Points
Sternguard Veterans - 5 Combi-Meltas, Drop Pod - 195 Points
Sternguard Veterans - 5 Combi-Meltas, Drop Pod - 195 Points
Troops Scout Squad - 5 Sniper Rifles, Camo Cloaks, Land Speeder Storm w/Multi-Melta - 120 Points
Tactical Squad - Combi-Flamer, Flamer, 3 Boltguns, Drop Pod - 120 Points
Tactical Squad - Combi-Flamer, Flamer, 3 Boltguns, Drop Pod - 120 Points
Fast Attack Bike Squad - 2 Melta-Guns, Combi-Melta, Attack Bike w/ Multi-Melta - 143 Points
Bike Squad - 2 Melta-Guns, Combi-Melta, Attack Bike w/ Multi-Melta - 143 Points
Drop Pod - 35 Points
Heavy Support Devastator Squad - 4 Lascannons - 150 Points
Tactics
Its a drop pod assault list. The only things on the board to start will be the Bike Squad, the Scouts (Who will infiltrate, letting their LSS come on empty via Deep Strike), and the devastators. Turn one sees Bray'arth, the Honor Guard, and one of the Sternguard Drop. Turn 2, the other Sternguard, the 2 tacticals, and the Land Speeder come in from reserve to mop up.
List 2 - White Scars
Spoiler:
CAD - White Scars
HQ Kor'sarro Khan - Moondrakkan - 150 Points (Goes with Command Squad)
Librarian - ML 2 (Divination and/or Fulmination), Hunter's Eye, Power Sword - 110 Points (Goes with Centurions)
Tactics
The Land Speeders and one unit of bikes stay in reserve to deep strike/outflank. Dread and LasDevs set up backfield. Scouts Infiltrate to a mid board objective if possible. Start the bikes at the front of the deployment zone and use Khan to scout them forward toward melta range. Turn one the cents drop in with the librarian acting as an anvil to the bikes hammer. The outflanking/Deep Striking units come in later to help where its needed.
I'm leaning toward the Salamanders list right now but I would appreciate feedback on either list on how to make it stronger.
Thanks!

I think the White Scar one would be better, for two reasons: 1st, your bikers are more versatile in capturing "time-sensitive" maelstorm type objective than the Droppod, 2nd, the Hunters eye grants Ignore cover to Grav cannon is awesome, and made your Grav Centurion the bane of MCs and Vehicles.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the Salamander list has problems with mobility. Aside from the bikes and the one speeder, once the troops come on, they footslog the rest of the game. My main concern between the two is that the Salamander list has almost 20 more wounds to play with than the White Scars list.
Though the White Scars list has nearly everything at T5, which could offset that...
So I worked on it a bit more last night and tried to see if I could mix the two lists together to get the best of both in one list (Since in this tournament, Self-Allying is allowed)
Elites Honor Guard - Chapter Banner, 2 Power Swords, 2 Power Axes, Drop Pod - 170 Points Sternguard Veterans - 5 Combi-Meltas, Drop Pod - 195 Points Sternguard Veterans - 5 Combi-Meltas, Drop Pod - 195 Points
Troops Tactical Squad - Combi-Flamer, Flamer, 3 Boltguns, Drop Pod - 120 Points Tactical Squad - Combi-Flamer, Flamer, 3 Boltguns, Drop Pod - 120 Points
Fast Attack Bike Squad - 2 Melta-Guns, Combi-Melta - 93 Points Attack Bike Squad - 2 Attack Bikes w/ Multi-Melta - 100 Points
Heavy Support Devastator Squad - 4 Lascannons - 150 Points
Allied Detachment - White Scars
HQ Librarian - ML 2 (Divination and/or Fulmination), Hunter's Eye, Combi-Grav, Power Sword - 120 Points (Goes with Centurions)
Troops Scout Squad - 5 Close Combat Weapons, Land Speeder Storm w/Assault Cannon - 110 Points
Fast Attack Drop Pod - 35 Points
Heavy Support Centurion Devastator Squad - Omniscope, 3 Gravcannon w/Amp, 3 Hurricane Bolters - 250 Points
I feel like this list, while still sacrificing some mobility, can have a potent punch when the drop pods come in. Thoughts?

I actually prefer the original Sallies list. It's more interesting and unusual, and I applaud anyone who takes Ashmantle. That's an army I would really like to see on the tabletop. The relative statistical strength doesn't matter anywhere near as much as the interest and style of the army and how happy you are playing it.
Yeah I'd go with one or the other. It loses effectiveness when you put them together. I prefer the WS list personally, maybe it's all that T5 12" OS you got on them bikes.
If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

This is not bad, But I strongly suggest you to put the FA bikes into the allied detachment of White scars, that made them Obsec, and benefit the HnR, skilled rider, S5 Hammer of Wrath of the White Scar CT

I love having the chance to use Ashmantle. He's tough, puts out a lot of short ranged pain, and if you pod him to your opponents' line, he can't be ignored (esp. If they have vehicles). This is close to my normal "for fun" list just amped up for a tournament. I do want to be competitive with it and recognize that given the meta of where I'll be playing, this may not be the strongest build, but it's hard to leave your favorite army out in the cold for that. I'll think harder on keeping the original list.
Thanks!

That and the turn one, in your face, grav-cents makes me feel like this is a much stronger list. I just worry about the lack of bodies. I know almost everything is T5 and that mitigates it somewhat, but it's less than I'm used to rolling with.

I thought about that. My only reason for leaving them there was the meltas stayed master crafted. I figured accuracy would be the bigger thing I needed in this list. But I'll try moving them over and see how they go.
Thanks!
