Denmark.

I recently got a hold on a Trollblood Starter pack for peanuts (I think four dollars is a fine deal, don't you? ), and it drew me back into the game, which I had played very little of with some Cygnar models some time ago. I know the setting very, very well, as I've played the RPG for a long time, and I have read a lot of lore on the net. Likewise, I've propably read all entries on Battlescribe once at least, so it's safe to say that I can get invested into the game.

So, looking around for cool models I might want to get for my new Trollbloods, and suddenly it remembered why I didn't get going with the game in the first place; I really, really don't like the artstyle of the setting.

Don't get me wrong, most models and artwork is well-done and all, but I just can't stand the style. It's so overdone and toony, I can't get into the models or characters at all, which is a shame, since the setting is very, very cool in itself, and has a lot of potential as the standard "magi-steampunk fantasy setting" of nerd culture... But when I look at, say, the Trollkin Champions, I just can't. That's not a bunch of veteran warriors from the Trollkin race, that's some mangled plastic with oversized weapons that are easy to print. Some models, like the Fennblades or the Trenchers are pretty good, but the rest are usually not. Just look at the difference between Borka1 and Borka2! It's like something drawn by Studio Ghibli and a Kill la Kill episode, respectively!

Do anyone see where I'm coming from? Is it a problem for you guys (or at least those of you who find the visuality of a wargame to be very important?).

I defenitely see where you are coming from (Denmark, quite clearly ). The PP models are really hit and miss for me too. PP makes many miniatures that are absolutely beautiful (Strakhov and eVayl are probably my favs), but others are downright hideous and many just look like cheap toys for little kids. The Trollbloods especially are a faction that suffers a lot from this. For me the Cygnaran warjacks are another clear example of the bad kind of PP miniatures.

But in the end, it is a matter of personal taste and some people will probably enjoy the aesthethics that I dislike.
For me it is important to not buy miniatures I do not like the look of. If you don't like the miniatures it is wasted money, even if it is just a little. So one should always try to pick a faction where you really like the look of most of the miniatures. If you can't find such a faction you really should not get into a game imo.

I know the feeling. When I first looked at getting in, I was really drawn to Menoth and Cygnar for background, but although most of the infantry are cool for them, the jacks are really cartoony.

My solution? Play Retribution. Avoiding the Dawnguard (don't like them) and the House Vyre Chassis (little too round, but acceptable, just), they're the least cartoony. In my opinion, at least. Plus, genocidal elves. What's not to love?

My $0.02, which since 1992 has rounded to nothing. Take with salt.
Elysian Drop Troops, Dark Angels, 30K
Mercenaries, Retribution
Ten Thunders, Neverborn
