How would you go about rolling for saves on a Lord Celestant on Stardrake if the Sisters of Thorn cast the shield of thorns on him? In what order would you do the saves, and when would you apply the mortal wounds to the nearby enemies?

I'm having trouble conceptualizing it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My initial thought is:

1) Roll save for Lord Celestant. On a 3+ he saves, on a 2 go to step 5.
2) For any 6+s rolled in step 1, the attacking unit takes a mortal wound.
3) Reroll all 1s you rolled in step 1. On a 3+ you make the save, on a 2 or a 1 got to step 5.
4) For each 3+ roll you made in step 3, deal a mortal wound to each enemy unit in 3", on a 6 the attacking unit also takes a mortal wound.
5) Roll the Shield of Thorns re-roll. On a 3+ you make the save.
6) On a 6+ in step 4, deal a mortal wound to the enemy unit who attacked.
7) On a 2, take a wound.
8) On a 1, re-roll because of the shield effect. On a 3+ you make the save. On a 1 or a 2 take a wound.
9) All saved wounds in step 8 cause a mortal wound to all units within 3" of the lord celestant.
10) On a 6+ roll in step 8, the attacking unit also takes a mortal wound?

Its much more simple because you can't re-roll a re-roll and shield of thorns triggers on any save of a 6.

Roll save:
3+ you pass, 6+ deal a mortal wound to the attacker.
1 you re-roll, 3+ you deal a mortal wound to each enemy unit within 3", 6+ you also deal a mortal wound to the attacker
2 you re-roll, 3+ you pass, 6+ deal a mortal wound to the attacker

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I don't know any of these stats but wanted to put my input on something. I don't think it says anywhere in the rules that you can't reroll a reroll. Everyone I know doesn't reroll a reroll but i guess it depends on if your group does or not.

The 40k rulebook clearly states it, but I don't think the AoS one does, i could be wrong though.

Did they clarify it in the FAQ sheet they released maybe?

I think you are both then suggesting that the shield re-roll effect on the Celestant can only come into effect once - basically cutting off items 8-10 of my list.

I can get behind that interpretation, and I'm not saying it is wrong. But I also haven't seen anything that says you can't bring the shield re-roll into effect twice in one attack, if you have the opportunity to make a second save roll.

The Sisters of the Thorn effect allows you to make a reroll but doesn't provide a value on that save roll (like mystic shield for instance). So it is essentially referring you back to the underlying unit (the Stardrake's) warscroll. I'm not sure why you wouldn't get to use all of the save rules on that warscroll.

I suppose an argument could be made that the shield effect doesn't provide for a second roll. It says: "You can re-roll save rolls of 1 for this model. If the re-rolled save is successful, the shield unleashes a deafening peal and each enemy unit within 3" suffers a mortal wound."

It doesn't say: "You can re-roll all save rolls of 1 for this model. If the re-rolled save is successful, the shield unleashes a deafening peal and each enemy unit within 3" suffers a mortal wound."

That would be explicit that you could. But there isn't any language that explicitly says you can't either.

@Snoopdeville: if you find that rule or FAQ that is applicable, please let me know! Though this isn't a case of re-rolling a 1 after rolling a 1 and getting a re-roll. It's a new save.

From the Age of Sigmar rules, 'Tools of War' (first page, bottom of the first column):

You can never re-roll a dice more than once, and re-rolls happen before modifiers to the roll (if any) are applied.
