My original brush with GW came in the late 1990's with 5th edition WHFB and then 3rd edition (I think?) 40k. Back in those times there were a LOT of models/options that had entries in army books but just didn't exist anymore in practice. For example, marked chaos champions were difficult or impossible to find. Certain characters could ride discs of Tzeentch, but there was no actual disc of Tzeentch model anymore. The worst example for me was Eldar Storm Guardians, the hand-to-hand option for Eldar, which was listed in the codex as a basic troop choice. However, there were no models for this unit at the time. The guardian box came with the parts to make the ranged version but not the close combat version.
Needless to say, I was rather frustrated about this until I eventually learned that in the UK there existed a special GW catalog that you could actually order discontinued items from. It took ages for the order to be fulfilled, but I was able to get my hands on some old champions of Nurgle, a champion of Tzeentch on disc, some really OOP rogue trader era stuff, and a bunch of sprues of eldar arms with hand weapons and pistols so that I could convert the current Guardians kit into Storm Guardians.
Does anyone know if this still exists? If it doesn't, when was this service ended? It would be really useful for people looking to pick up legacy WHFB stuff that is becoming harder to find on the secondary market.
