Hey to all the orkineers out there. New to dakka, but not new to 40K, just finally joining the community, haha. Anyway, I was recently gifted a Start Collecting Orks box for my Birthday, and while I like the orks and their fluff, I'm at a loss as to what my purchases should be. Keep in mind, I'm okay with doing conversion work and building, and I'm kinda looking at things with a budget. So good folks of falls, where should I set my eyes on getting next?

Personally I would get one trukk and one mek gun. With those and instructions online you can make 3 mek guns and have the min grots to use them. 3 kustom mega kannonz is a good choice and I use them in almost every single list. Also go on eBay, search for imperial guard rocket launchers to convert some tankbustas with. Cheap easy and affordable. Guard players don't use them and tankbustas are great.

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

Things that are Always good regardless of the army style are:

Plastic deffkopta's get a few ~3 of them and capturing objectives suddenly becomes a lot simpler. You can only get them second hands so buying them might be worth it just to be sure that you have them in the future.

Da lucky stick on a warbozz. Either on a bike or in mega armour.
Warbozz in mega armour fits perfectly with your small squad of both. Converting a warbozz in mega armour is one of the things you might want to start on.

The grot box set is also a great deal. It gets you a second troop choice that helps to unlock a cad and they can be used as grot gun crew.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The rest of the army really depends on the type of list you want to build. A fair warning tank bustas might get a lot worse if the FAQ becomes permanent.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll see about getting a trukk, deffcoptas and grots and a warboss. I was also wondering about the deff dread. I heard it wasn't that good, so was thinking about using it for conversion parts.

You might want to stick on to it. The model is a beauty , they are expensive to buy and GW might just buff them in the next codex. Also that getting started formation isn't that bad really.

So also wondering, what to give my Nobz. Having a tough time figuring out if I want to go all shootas, big choppas or mix and match.

My opinion

-Big choppa's are totally useless. They neither have the S to penetrate vehicles with ease nor the Ap to hurt infantry.( this isn't a popular vieuw)

- Mix and matching. Sounds fun, but is a waste of points. Your unit can only do one thing at the same time while you paid to do all the things all the time.

Right, so shootas then. Alternatively, I could use some extra bits I have to convert them to tankbustas with 3 rokkit launchas and 2 tankhammers. (Or all of them with launchas if I got really creative.)

Shootas are good.

But what you need to think about is your ratio of quality vs quantity. MegaNobz can kill a lot of stuff but they are slow and expensive - maybe you'd rather take more basic boyz? A real Ork Horde is hard to stop, but you´ll be scooping up models by the handful every enemy shooting phase. You need something that can draw fire and/or reach the enemy. One Trukk is just a swift burial by fire for the orks in it, six Trukks or more is a bad day for most opponents.

I'll give you slightly different advice.

If you've got the start collecting box and are looking to expand, you might look at Battle For Vedros. It'll get you another warboss, a Deff Kopta, and another unit of boyz. Plus a bunch of space marines you can sell or trade all for $50. The nobs in the box aren't very good because they don't have wargear options, and nob's aren't very useful in games.

If you do that you are looking at a Warboss, a painboy, 2 units of boyz, a deffkopta, a deff dread and 2 units of nobz. There is a decent core there, but it is missing something very important. Trukks. Get some Trukks.

As stated above Mek Gunz (Kitbash them from Trukk kits), Tankbustas (need trukks), and Deffkoptas (which you can get cheap from ebay) are all excellent choices. Lootas are good and also cheap. Warbikers are really good, but pretty pricey. The same with Meganobz but they have the advantage of being playable with only 1 box.

If you want to run the formation, my recommendation is to give the nobs 2 Power Claws, and the other 3 big choppas or ordinary choppas. If they have a PK or Big Choppa on a nob they get a shoota. Otherwise they get a slugga. I like Big Choppas because they make certain the Nobz can smash most transports on the charge even if they have to multi-charge.

If you'd like to convert the nobz into something more useful, you could consider Flash Gitz or biker nobz. Both are 2nd tier unit choices, but at least they are better than bottom tier nobz. Just make sure every unit of boyz always has a nob with a Power Klaw and boss pole. Also it might be worth keeping 3-5 nobs to run the start collecting formation.

Trukks + Boyz, or Trukks + Tankbustas, or Trukks + Meganobz or even in a pinch Trukks + Ordinary nobz are all viable ways to run Orks.

ETA: Mek's are important too. 10 boyz + Nob (BP, PK) in a Trukk becomes alot more useful when you've got a Mek to eat a challenge and keep that nob alive. I wouldn't buy the Mek blister. The Loota kit makes 4 lootas and a mek. Get 2 of those.

I might have to pick up Battle for Vedros, then and go from there. I'll scour ebay and see what I can find on cheap trukks and look out for any conversion potential (Eyeing you, Ghost Ark sitting on my shelf...)
While the formation from the box set seems nice, maybe going with my plan of converting the nobz might be better. I might also be able to convert a mek gun from some necron bits and some orky looking plates...could be interesting haha.

Thanks for the advice, guys!
