You have $200 to spend to build a new army of your choosing. Assume that you can purchase everything at least 65% of listed retail price and the only other requirement is that the army must be bound.

Aim for point value from 750 - 1250

EDIT: Just to say this isn't really a what should I buy question. Just curious what people would buy if it was their $200. Sorry if that was not made clear.

Buy ONE BOX OF MINIATURES!

Heh, couldn't resist.

If I had such a restriction I'd probably just buy Start Collecting Boxes. Unless you are some variant of Space Marines other than Wolves, those boxes actually comes with some decent units.

Alternatively, buy as many of those Deathwatch Biker boxes and make a White Scars Biker army. Also, does the 200 include the cost of the codex and Supplements or would I be assumed to already have those before picking the choices for my army?

Bang for buck, the big boxes are going to be your friend.

My first thought was a Betrayal at Calth box, and spend the rest on transports. Maybe a assault/dev squad, although you’ve got plenty of warm bodies, so going 3rd party a/o bitz sellers might be a better choice, especially on budget. Build it as a battle demi-co, with a few extras.

Looking into which start collecting box lights your fire and building from that would be my next suggestion.

But with most “what should I get” questions, the right answer is very subjective.

This is to include miniatures only. Assume supplements and codex are in hand prior to miniature purchase.

I was reading this thinking "and what else?" Then I saw where you live and figured you're probably over budget already :(

Start Collecting! Admech, build Dominus, Onager, 5 Rangers and 5 Vanguard, then finish off a war convocation.

It can be done for $300~ or so at 20% off.

Blood Angels, Custodes, Tzeentch, Alpha Legion, Astra Militarum, Deathwatch, Thousand Sons, Imperial Knights, Tau, Genestealer Cult.

I have a problem.

Being contrary for the sake of being contrary doesn't make you unique, it makes you annoying.

To Ebay, and hunt for models from box set starters.

...

That's probably cheating, isn't it?

I'd probably go for a BaC set, a box of devastators, two sets of jump packs and two drop pods. I think it is fairly obvious how I'd build them

If I found $200 on the ground and HAD to spend it?

If I'm buying for a gaming group, and using Amazon prices, I'd buy...

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Core Game + ...
_____Lair of the Wyrm Expansion
_____Shards of Everdark Heroes and Monsters Expansion
_____Dice Pack
Star Wars X-Wing: The Force Awakens Core Game + ...
_____Imperial Aces Expansion
_____Rebel Aces Expansion

Comes out to $200.65 in today's prices with free shipping included and gives you two full game for multiple players with options to give you lots of flexibility and replay potential.

If I'm required to spend it on 40k? I don't know. $200 doesn't go far at full retail. Assuming you already own all of the rules... I'd probably work on an AdMech army. At 65% off retail and assuming free shipping, $203.34 would get me...

1x Adeptus Mechanicus Getting Started
1x Onager Dunecrawler Box
2x Kataphron Battle Servitor Boxes
1x Sicarian Infiltrators Box

Given the structure of the Getting Started Box, this would give me two legal detachments.

Skitarii
5x Vanguard + Upgrades
5x Rangers + Upgrades
5x Sicarians + Upgrades
2x Onager Dunecrawlers + Upgrades

Cult Mechanicus
Tech-Priest Dominus + Upgrades
3x Kataphron Destroyers + Upgrades
3x Kataphron Destroyers + Upgrades

It's 920 points BEFORE upgrades, and there is a lot of upgrade potential in there. You could very easily play a decent 1,000 point list using your ~$200 investment.

At 65% price on GW's website, I could get 3 boxes of Windriders, 1 Warlock Skyrunner, 1 Farseer Skyrunner, 1 Vyper, and 1 Wraithknight for about $217.

That gives me anywhere between 650 and 950 points depending on how models are decked out.

Also it's battleforged.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

More serious, I'd buy stuff that you couldn't build an army out of itself, but adds to my current army. I'd scrounge Ebay for various out of print things.

You could get Two Knight Wardens for $204 @ 65% price.

Between a betrayal at caliph, at start collecting and a kit for extra like a dev or assault kit.

I could build a fair marine army.

That's assuming discount + no delivery etc and the like.
Ernough parts for most troop choices, basic hq, elites and weapons options al in 200.

I'm in uk so a fair roller to pound. Same country as factory etc.

I want to say Calth and stuff. But realistically umm... 2x Start Collecting: Space Wolves, maybe a transport or two? Prices escape me but that should be close and give a 5-man Thunderwolf pack (build a Lord on Thunderwolf out of the 6th), two squads (Grey Hunters and Blood Claws? IDK what's good), and then a transport or something. Thanks, now I want to revisit that since I have one SW start collecting box already, and I'll have the $85 for another one relatively soon, plus I Have a drop pod and a razorback somewhere; should be a nice little army.

Thanks. Thanks a bunch

Are these boxes full biker kits with a simple deathwatch upgrade sprue added?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy DV bikers?

Those are full biker boxes with a DW sprue added and are cheaper than the 3-pack that exists currently. The discount to them makes them cheaper than DV bikers.

I would start a new army.
Codex, start collecting box, an extra troop (or 2) and something I think is cool (probably a fast attack) with what I have left.

Note it does depend on the status of the army I am busy developing. I have more daemons than I really need now (not stopping, just adding slowly going forward) but a year ago I would have dropped it all on more daemons

Eg: Necron box $85, codex $50 ($135), more warriors $36 ($171) and a spyder $33 ($204). Slightly over, but hey. No idea what the points cost is but should give me something to take to the club.
Or: Ork box $85, codex $41 ($126), more boyz $29 ($155), bikes $41 ($196).

Fair enough you might of just given me an idea. Except no whote scars have to find some other chapter that uses bikes. Heavily.

Now to convince my wife i need to spend $200 on plastic toys.

Easily enough to get you to up to 1,000 points. Just need some expenditure on paints and brushes, and you're good to go, even at GW prices. Heck, you can even save the painting till later; just get a spray can of black and some silver, red and gold paints at a later date.

I've purchased an Eldar Start collecting box for $64 shipped....that means you could get three of them (or any start collecting box) for right at $200.

I don't play current 40K but you could assemble:

1xFarseer on bike
2xWarlocks on bikes
9x Bikers
2x Fire Prisms
1x Nightspinner

How does that fare points-wise?
