Cathie wants the kids to get into Warmachine and Hordes instead of Warhammer for several reasons. She decided to surprise me with a "Gift" although I already noticed the charge is on my credit card! Now, we have both of the brand new battleboxes coming our way. (Arriving by 8:00 Monday) She was hoping that we would just be able to use what was in the battleboxes and not have to keep buying more books and models. (Trust me, I know better) We are also much closer to a store that plays these two games. (Something that might appeal to me when I can get out of the house again.) The funny thing is that I was looking at buying the old Hordes battlebox because I wanted to try Circle, and the old Warmachines one because I wanted to paint the really cool looking Khador and Menoth models in it. They used up the good factions on the first sets. If I end up playing either of these games in the long run, it will probably be with Khador and Circle...

A few related questions;

Do the core rulebooks in the battleboxes cover the whole game like the starter set rulebooks in Warhammer do. (Whole rulebook shrunk down and printed on thin paper) or will I need to go out and buy the Primal MkIII rules for both games? Are the rules in the game sets limited to the two included factions?

If I do end up buying the older battleboxes, will I be able to use the models with MkIII, or will I need to get new stat cards? I don't quite know how Privateer does this.

If I have the two rulebooks and whatever stat cards come with any models I buy, is that all I need to fully play the game? Do the stat cards come with the miniatures? Do I need to buy a separate book for every faction I play? I always thought one of the advantages of these games was the ability to dabble in more factions than you can in Warhammer without going bankrupt. Do the Stat cards basically function like the codex entries in Warhammer? I am excited to try out a new game, but I want to know what I have just gotten into. They might go right up on Ebay so that I can finish up my Warhammer CSM army instead.

Privateer's website has a lot of neat eye candy, but trying to find out any answers about the game is tough. I might be looking in the wrong area, but I couldn't even find out what factions were in the boxes Cathie ordered until I watched an unboxing video on Youtube. Even that didn't show enough to tell me if the rulebook was full or abridged.

Thanks in advance for you answers. I watched a couple of Battle reports on Youtube last night and today. The game looks like a lot of fun, and the people playing seem to really enjoy it. If I can dive in without going totally insane, I will make a couple of little armies and we will have some skirmishes. Otherwise, I will just stay with Warhammer 40K

Yes, they are full rulebooks. PP even has the rules online, so you can print them off if you wish.

It depends, most of the older boxes had their cards updated. But it depends if the store in question could be bothered to do so. If you have a tablet or phone, look at downloading the Warroom2 app. It's an official app that has all the cards for faction. The basic deck is free, you have to pay to unlock all of them. But the cards will last until the end of the edition. Once you unlock the deck, all the new releases are free too.

All miniatures come with stat cards. They are purely "crunch" no fluff behind them at all. Forces of warmachine books are due for release later in the year, which would contain information about the difference factions.

The best place for more information is the privateer press forums, all the information you want would be there.

Thanks a bunch. I am glad that they have the full rules in them. I would hate to have to buy two new books that cost as much as the armies! It sounds like we can jump into this reasonably cheaply. Cathie thinks she will get us playing this instead of Warhammer to save money. I don't understand the logic of saving money by buying another new game to sink it into. Then again, when she comes home from the Mall with a trunk full of bags, she never tells me how much she spent, only how much she saved!

If it matters, the Horde book has an appendix with the Warmachine rules and vice versa. So if you buy a horde battlebox you also get rules for warcasters and warjacks.

So, for example, you could buy the new hordes two player box and the old warmachine box and have the basic rules for both games. And hopefully the local store has the cards you need.

If not, you can probably request the mk 3 cards thru the PP website for missing parts. And I know you can buy them from the online store now as well. Though you're probably better off just buying the mk 3 deck.

Thanks for the response! That's great to know. Cathie has ordered both of the new sets, so I will end up with both rulebooks. This way. if one of the kids grabs a book, I can still play both games. I think I will get the electronic cards. I will give the books a good reading through when I get the sets.

As for getting to try it out, the paint queue probably goes all the way through the Holidays right now. I have the rest of my Dark Angels, about 2000 points of Chaos and a Harlequin army to finish before I can get to these guys. I hope to eventually try it out. As I said, it looks like a fun game. I am hoping that the kids will paint up the figures and get it on the table so I can play with it a bit.

I got them today. The rules look like they make a lot of sense. It will be easier to learn than 40k has been! It looks like a touch more strategy and a bit less luck than 40K, but I won't know until I have played a few games. It's a pretty slick package! The guides are concise and the painting instructions are pretty nice.

The models aren't quite up to Warhammer, but they are nicer than metal figures. A bit clunky, but they look pretty cool. I will have a lot of fun painting them. I am planning to keep them and add them to my collection. The Cryx do nothing for me (Mechanical 'nids?) but the Cygnax will be a lot of fun to paint up, as will the Skorne. The Trollbloods will probably grow on me too, as I think they will be more likable than Orks. I might just grab some Khador models and start an extra small army from scratch at a later date. I don't see myself expanding any of these armies a lot. I will probably just pick up a few pieces and hold smaller battles or large skirmishes.

Thanks for all of the input. This looks like it will be a fun game for family play. It also looks a lot easier to teach to newbies than 40k.
