Hey all,
This fall I'm starting up a Rogue Trader campaign using Fantasy Flight's 40K RPG system, and my alarmingly large backstock of terrain and miniatures. To capture the swashbuckling feel of Rogue Trader, some new models are in order.
The inevitable space battles are likely to be just a handful of ships (rather than entire fleets), so I knew I'd have room for something more impressive than just off-the-shelf BFG minis. So to show I'm serious about the campaign, I started work on this custom Cruiser!

The whole thing's about 12 inches long. I started by making a prow from scratch- it's hard to find that classic shape, and I have a table mounted sander that made it possible (though very, very dusty) to grind out my own. I cobbled together a basic frame out of wood pieces, and set to detailing.

All the Gun Batteries are made from various wire connectors and terminal blocks, as is the bridge (making a good looking bridge is tricky!). Combined with cut down pieces of Basilica Administratum pieces, the Gothic aesthetic came together surprisingly quickly. The statue in front of the bridge is from the Warhammer Fantasy Manor House terrain, as are the eagles on the deck. The 3 gun turrets are my favorite find- they're just cut down Wire Connectors taht have spring levers so they're reuseable. you can find 'em on ebay crazy cheap.

The Engines are made from Thread Spools wrapped with rubber tank tread from a toy, and capped off with nozzles that are just half a fish tank filter bio ball. The smaller engines are conduits from the Imex Power Plant kit. (Is it just me, or are all the IMEX / Platformer / Tehnolog kits getting really hard to find these days?). Also key to achieving the Battlefleet look are plenty of antennas.

With good sources of materials identified, I'm confident I can make even larger ships for our campaign (Cruiser, anyone?). But I hope to have this Frigate painted before then, in time for our players to start skulking about the Koronus Expanse

Nice, I love bfg but haven't gotten round to playing the rpg yet, have you worked out the ship build yet? Does she have a name?

Thanks, all! The ship's about 12 inches long. I'm realizing now it's closer to a light cruiser. Looking like Port and Starboard Macro Cannon Batteries, and Dorsal Sunsears for the turrets. There's no official spec for a hull like that, so I'll just have to devise my own... No name yet, but it's coming soon.

Final build shots: finished the Prow, and added more detail to the Stern and Bridge areas.

The big challenge now is picking a Color Scheme... Visual suggestions welcome!

That is fantastic.

Your stuff is always inspiring.

Funny you bring up the imex kits. I was just shopping for them, pegasus hobbies site has the chemical kit but they say the power plant is likely gone for good.

Whats funny about asking is I needed the Chem plan because I was inspired by your site to build a dozen BFG transports out of It!

Welp, got the ship primed. It's nice to see it in a unified color, everything lines up well.

I also settled on a color scheme, something like this fella:

Which of course, means I primed... in the WRONG COLOR -_-

So I may be re-priming the back of the ship black. Drybrushing is the fastest way to paint something anyway, right?

Next up: some crew conversions, or painted ship. Whichever grabs me by the throat first.

Ooo looking good. Can't wait to see it painted and the crew conversions you mentioned.

Painted!

I can probably get more detail into the paint, but this is at least tabletop quality, and there's still MUCH to do for the campaign...
Oh and she has a name now, the Canterbury. Seems fitting, considering she's ancient and haunted.

Enough dawdling: all crews, to your stations!

That is incredible! All the little details. And you captured the aesthetic perfectly.

Just sticking with imperial ships for now, or are there xenos ships lurking in the void?

Amazing, this is really giving me the itch to start building some chaos ships at this scale....

Thanks folks!

Yeah, will definitely be making some Xenos ships, Eldar and Orks first. Might try some Stryxis, Rak'Gol or Necrons later, who knows.
Agreed, Chaos ships at this scale could be a lot of fun- I want to make them all corrupted and horrific looking, of course!
Also, eyeballed scale and it looks like I can repurpose a buncha Starcrashers ships for smaller raiders, hulks, freighters, etc. So yay for that.

As to miniatures, I have a healthy collection of painted models to draw on for the PCs, will post pics of those later (promise!)
For now, here's some Armsmen and a Deck Officer I threw together to fill out the ranks during boarding skirmishes, planetfall, mutinies, etc.

The armsmen are converted 'Stealer Hybrids from Deathwatch: Overkill. The heads are mostly from Wargames Factory British Line Infantry (now sold by Warlord games, I guess).

The deck officer is a Skiitari body, legs from the British line infantry, and a head from Wargames Factory Spanish Cavalry.

Paint pending- gotta get back to the shipyards before they overload the plasma reactors again...

Love that tri corner hat, really changes the model and fits in well with FFG's Rogue Trader art (RIP).

Thanks again for the kind words folks!

Now that I know the first ship is a Light Cruiser, I'm making some properly scaled Frigates next. WIP on the first one:

I figured out, by cutting some rounded wooden Hand Rail stock at an angle, I can bust out a good prow shape right quick (no compound curves, but still looks good). Will make it a cinch to crank out a couple more ships at this size and style.

Also pleased with these engines: metal knobs with rubber tank tread wrap, and the back of the hull has some Power Plant kit bits on it. Because Plasma should look dangerous.

And some BONUS CONTENT:

I wanted to print a nice Warrant of Trade prop for our game, so I cobbled this together in Photoshop.

I know you want one, so here's a clean version. I used the Crusades font, or you could print your RT's name by hand if you're a badass.

How does it scale vs. the previous ship?

Also, if you are making light escorts, you can’t just make one. They only come in flotillas! How many sister-ships do you have planned? Need at least one more.

I was going to ask about those prows, cool idea, I never would have thought of it.

Started into get tempted... Something to try when I finish Space Fleet.

Thanks folks!

Here's that Frigate painted:

And a scale shot of the two ships (plus a freighter model I borrowed from my Starcrashers set). Techpriest mini to show the size of the models (not in scale, of course!)

I also got the game area ready for our campaign. I think it turned out nice, plus the black bg makes it easier to photo ship battles and terrain and such.

Here's the finished Warrant of Trade (converted an old address book I got at the thrift store, plus a painted template from Dreadfleet):

And finally, an (apologetically blurry) photo of the minis we've selected so far for our PCs. Still need to make an Arch-Militant...

L to R: Navigator, Voidmaster, Astropath, Fire Warrior, Rogue Trader, Senechal, Explorator, Missionary.

Wish us luck on our first voyage into the void!

Wonderful truly wonderful.
