So I decided I wanted to buy a proper carrying case for my minis. Something I could use to bring around a Warhammer or Warmachine army or a couple skirmish games worth of minis in. Something that I could carry to the LGS or maybe take on a plane. I started looking at different offerings like Battlefoam and KR Multicase and I find myself overwhelmed by options and price. What would you recommend?

I’m a big fan of KR. By the time I’m done typing this, there is a good chance someone will have posted that battlefoam is the best. They both have their pros and cons. When doing research myself, I felt that KR was the best ballance between cost and quality. BF, IMHO payed a little too much for marginal upgrades. But that’s a very subjective point.

I’m not sure if KR makes a case specifically sized to fit under the carry on restrictions on airlines. Pretty sure BF does though. (PackAir? I’m not that familiar with their range) Not saying there isn’t a KR that would fit, but I don’t fly with my minis, so it’s never crossed my radar to look into it.

There is a lot of variance in how armies pack. Not only how many points, but the general army composition. For example, I can fit ~100 infantry in the same space that 2 drop pods take up in my foam. But if I do a mechanized list, 50 infantry and 4 rhinos take up the same space. If you have an example list of what you want to bring, that might sway you from one product to another, and will definitely dictate the size.

I know KR customer support is very good. If you e-mail them a list of what you have, they will make some recommendations.

If you do have multiple systems, KR is really designed to support that. You can have boxes packed for both, and just slip the ones you need into your bag for the day.

Thanks for the reply. For some examples of what I'd like to at least be able to carry around:

A few warlocks
Two scythean/carnivean/ravagores
Neraph/Seraph
Angelius
Nephilim Bloodseer
Zuriel
Four shredders
Strider Rangers
Strider UA
Strider Deathstalker
Ogrun Warspears with UA
Probably another 10-12 man unit
Two Shepherds
A forsaken

Which is about 30 30mm bases, 6-7 40mm bases and 5 large bases.

Alternatively I'd like to be able to fit 300 points of Infinity and a decent amount of a Malifaux faction in there at once.

Right now I am consider buying a Feldherr, KR or Battle Foam bag and getting some 3" and 1.5" pluck trays.

That's going to be hard to carry regardless. Personally I'm not impressed with my Battlefoam bag that I recently purchased, but it's not a super expensive one. As models get larger and more crazy it's tough to find good cases --- luckily you can get it all laser-cut to fit etc.

I'd definitely lean toward KR multicase, even if the combined package may be a bit more expensive. Other option is to buy some foam yourself and make/use a proper container of your own. My main box for my 40K minis is a Pelican case which is stuffed with foam from an old Citadel carrying case. The case is obviously 10x stronger than the old flimsy Citadel box.

I would suggest you get the new GW zigzag foam case, its great for odd size infantry such as what you've described, probably the medium or large size case.

I'd look at KR. They have suggestions for easy faction of most popular builds and they have standard options for allot of large models too. Plus the option of half size trays if you really want to mix up model sizes within a case.

There also keen to help and knowledgable so a call to them and a chat about your collection should generate the foam you want.

I'd definitely recommend KR. I've got a bunch of their cases in a few different sizes, and they all work really well. The foam's very nice, and the custom foam options make it pretty easy to mix and match for your army. I had one box get accidentally stood on, and though the cardboard creased and gave way a bit, it's still perfectly fine, and the models came through without a scratch.

I would not recommend the GW cases. They are nice and all, but the plastic they use for their carry cases is garbage. One of ours has a lip on the lid that cracked after all of 2 uses.

If you can get the zigzag foam, it is definately worth it for oddly shaped models, but if you have both oddly shaped and fragile, get a custom cut (or one of the KR pick and plucks). The GW zigzag stuff can put a lot of pressure on larger models, and I get a bit uncomfortable with it. I have never tried putting my wraithknight in it, but an Imperial knight is just fine. Also, since the bottom of the zigzags are not attached, heavier or really short (Canoptek scarabs size) models tend to shuffle about underneath instead of stay where they should.

One quick fix is to get some free-floating egg carton foam (also called convoluted foam). It works with oddly shaped mini's pretry well, and you can get it to fit pretty easy in any kind of lidded box (I use a Rubbermaid with snap closure handles). I have never taken it on a plane though, so I am not sure if it would hold up to baggage packer hassle or on board turbulence shifting.

If I had to pick though, I would do KR.

Kr multicase all the way I've had mine years never had a model break and the cardboard only has a little ware on the hinge.

Cheap and robust.

KR can get costly, if you have large models. Getting many into one box needs planning, depending on the models' shapes.
But, once you have them all boxed up, and you mark what is in each box, it is easy to grab the box you need for that game.
The bigger 'aluminium' range of KR is better there, though, but it just means unpacking foam trays to get to the bottom. This will be a problem with all cases, though, not just KR's big ones.

If you need help picking what to get, the 40mm bases on my 40k Terminators fit properly into 1/3 deep foam trays. I have pictures of them in my Gallery's Stuff section.

I've been a big fan of my tablewars cases. I have a full sized and a mini version. I also store my figures on extra trays, so it's easy to change out armies.

I haven't tried it, but the new GW one does look a good idea.

You can get the same box much cheaper from its original maker.

It’s not the box that people like about it, it’s the foam.

One of the problems with pluck foam or bespoke cases is that once you get it, you are done. With the zig-zag, you are moving dreadnoughts one day, terminators the next, and green tide the day after that. I’m not sure anyone else makes something comparable. I vaguely recall seeing a small company talk about it, but not sure if they got off the ground.

I’ve heard some complaints about it, so it’s not the be-all of storage, but it is a neat concept. If KR made a tray of it, I’d include it next time I order new stuff from them. But I’m not changing horses to a new company now, I like the interchangeability of the KR trays/box/bag system.

I'm having a case built for me out of wood, and using foam inserts. I only go to the local hobby shop to play once a week, but I like my stuff secure nonetheless.

I just bought a KR Multicase tray set and I had bad experience.
The tray set is the Age of Sigmar starter set and it should contain all miniature from the AoS starter set

https://www.krmulticase.com/product/traysets/WHAOS-STO-BOX

None of the tray is 40mm deep, the 32mm deep has written in the description that can contain retributor: maybe if you break them in half because there is no way a retributor can fit in that cells. Also there are 2 pick and pluck foam that they say they are able to fit: 3 prosecutors and all big models.
I already written to them to have an explanation and what they want to do to adjust this situation.

I chose KR because 1.5 of their "units" hold my entire 1850 pt 40k army.

The other major appeal was that their cases don't stand out. Its literally a black bag with some pockets and a KR logo in the corner. I can take it with me into the office or subway and no one has any clue what it is.

You could easily bring the bag that holds 1 KR unit and a regular sized backpack onto a plane as your carry-on.
