I am looking to start a space wolves army thinking 1000-1500

So far I have three boxes of thunder wolf cavalry, two boxes of wolf pack, one box of wolf guard terminators, one Wulfen box, venerable dreadnought, iron priest and wolf lord krom

The dreadnought has the axe and shield

Next I'm looking at the thunder wolf. I was thinking a unit of 4 and another of 5. All with shields and probably some power fists. I was going to make some with the thunder hammer but didn't know if that would grab even more fire.

The Wulfen are another unit I'm having a hard time deciding. They are pricey so if they don't make it to combat that would be an issue. So probably two with frost claws. And possible add a storm wolf later

Terminators with one flamer

A unit of ten grey hunters with a pack leader with melts bombs

A unit of ten blood claws mostly stock

I know that wasn't written in a very easy format. Sorry still pretty new to 40k. I intend on buying some more I just wanted to start assembling some so I can start painting

Are they all pre-built?

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Not pre built. I haven't built anything other than the iron priest, wolf lord krom and the venerable dreadnought.

I was just trying to get some ideas for leading out the thunderwolf cavalry, the wulfen and the grey hunters/blood claws.

I have only played with eldar mostly so far, and relatively new at that, they don't have quite as many options as space wolves.

- 3x TWC
- 2x Fenrisian Wolves
- 1x Terminators
- 1x Wulfen
- 1x Ven Dread (Axe/Shield)
- 1x Iron Priest
- 1x Wolf Lord Krom

~ TWC are amazing. I go with 3, then add an Iron Priest on Thunderwolf Mount w/ 4 Cyberwolves. I also would turn a TWC model into a WGBL/Lord and go 2 Fenrisian Wolves. This becomes a MEAN unit, but for a slim cost.

~ Company of the Great Wolf detachment found in the Champions of Fenris book allows you to go 1HQ/2Elites, for up to 4HQ/3Elites, which would also give your TWC and Terminators +1WS (hitting on 3's in CC is amazing).

~ I am very fond of the Wolf Claw on TWC, as it makes them S6 (2+ Wound vs T4 units) and Shred (Reroll Wounds), with AP3 - and Rending (for occasional AP2 wounds). I also have seen Storm Shields on them, tho I wouldn't spam them on -every- model to shave on pts (and spend them elsewhere). There are times that a SS won't make any difference, and rolling Look Out Sir rolls to the ones without the Storm Shields when it is only a normal save will maximize your pts/potential.

~ Wulfen, I've found, are best with the Great Frost Axes. I go a TH/SS or two, then the rest as GFA. As they strike at initiative 5, they unleash 5 attacks. then - if they end up dying in CC (the best place for them to die) they'll unleash those attacks again, so it's best to get them spent so you can get double strikes in a CC. S8 instant Deaths any T4 models, which i believe is sooo important (Feel No Pain, and Multi-wound models just die...)

~ Terminators are tricky... I haven't found a good place for them on my lists. They aren't *bad* just that there is SO MUCH shooting now in 7th, so either you'll get a load of AP2 wounds or SPAM of shots forcing handfuls of saves.

~ Grey Hunters would go well with a "Death Pack" formation, which is from the Start Collecting box. 1 Lord, 1 unit of Grey Hunters, 1 unit of TWC. They can run and charge, or run and shoot (either one, not both) when within 12" of the Lord. I throw him on a TWMount then have him join the TWC and have the GH's drop with Plasma in a Pod. Were it me, I'd throw one of those terminators as the WGPL with combi plas, and a plasma pistol, and a plasma rifle - so there's 5x S7 shots and the S6 grenade they can throw each turn - then add a Rune Priest for Living Lightning Tempastus Primarus power, so there's another 3d6 S7 shots thrown to a different target (shot in Psychic phase, and can target something other than unit with no penalties). Give him the Helm of Durfast so that nothing can take cover saves, and that he rerolls his misses to hit with the Living Lightning (and therefore no Jinks!)

~ Ven Dread. he's great. it's very difficult to have his Front 13 AV and 3+ save face alllll the threats shooting at him, you'll have to prioritize your facing and maybe block line of sight to the rest. in CC he's sooo mean, ESPECIALLY with the new FAQ released which gives him +2 attacks to his codex profile (along with every other SM dreadnought). Check out the Warhammer 40k Facebook page for it, it's legit and is used by Tournaments and such. I would Pod him in, personally.

I don't bother with Terminators, frankly I think the best use for a Terminator kit is extending the Wulfen kits to ten models each.
I'm not going to disagree with MekLen on TWC and Wolf Claws at all but I would recommend looking into Power Mauls as well. Coupled with Furious Charge TWC and Power Mauls are Tank Busting deathsticks, admittedly they lack the high ap of other Power Weapons but it only takes one hit to destroy anything T4 or less.
Wulfen are brilliant, the Curse is one of the best effects in the game, the irritating thing is they're Melee machines but they draw fire so they struggle to get there. Good delivery methods are still the holy grail.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Mauls huh? They still have rending too...

Instant Death effect is no joke, S8 vs T4 is rawesome to throw at them.

If you're on the fence about particular weapons to bring, bring them all that you like and have models be placed in a way where they are putting their wounds into the appropriate models in CC.
