So I'm finally taking the plunge since a few friends are always playing. After looking over the factions, different models and rules, I've narrowed it down to Chaos. I really like the Warriors, both aesthetics and how they seem tanky, so I figured I'd start with the Slaves of Darkness box. I'm also liking the idea of making everything mark of nurgle, hopefully making my guys more resilient and spreading some nurgle rot. I'm not too sure if there's a right way to go about mixing these so that's why I'm here. If given a preference, I'd rather go elite than horde.

The armies I'll be seeing across the table are undead, khorne, trees and the dreaded sig-marines. I'm not looking to win any tournaments, just hoping to slow grow without getting completely curb stomped by Sigmar every game if that's possible. Any advice on where to go after the starter box would help a lot. Thanks!

Starter box is awesome but I think it only comes with like 10 warriors, and you'll need a lot more than that!

But warriors are always good to have, Chaos Knights look pretty good and they are pretty tough.

Demon princes are also awesome and pretty nasty.

I don't play chaos however so maybe take what I say with a grain of salt!

Starter box comes with 12 warriors and 5 knights. I bought 2 starter kits and an extra box of warriors to bring the total to 40 so I can have two 20-man units. Next up will be an extra box of knights.

If you could find the big box with the manticore (lord heldrath's something?), I think that's also pretty good value.

there's also obviously the rotbrings, blightkings, glotkin

if you don't mind mixing in skaven, there's the catapult if you need some ranged attacks.

Also about the Daemon Prince, he looks good but in most of the games I played, the Daemon Prince kind of under performs, but then I must be heaping lots of expectations from it coming from 8th ed.

If you're going Nurgle look at the Nurgle specific stuff. As noted by aquietfrog.

The Slaves to Darkness make a solid core (as in tanky) where you go from there depends on the theme you want, in terms of aesthetics and tactical strenghts.

For chaos in general, they easily take a beating from ranged attacks, and need something fast to take out or decimate the enemys shooty stuff.
So, either you should get tzeench deamons or skaven to provide a shooty support to your army, or you get chariots, some flying monster or other fast moving units to harass the enemy balistics.
Skaven cannons could possibly be a nice addition to a Nurgle themed army, but you would probably need some fast units anyway.
Both Sylvaneth and Storm Cast has some nice ranged attacks that its hard to "tank up" against.

Oh, and speaking as a chaos opponent, nurgling bases are horrible to face, they just wont die, and do decent damage. I Always feel the need to pour to many attacks on those little critters.

You can always combine it with nurgle rotbringers and daemon of nurgle. IMO epidermiusis the best nurgle buffer and putrid blightking is the way to go if you are looking for elite army.
Slave to darkness as core is already good enough

Thanks for the help!
Bought 2 starters, Lord of Plague, and 1 BlightKings box.
Hopefully within the week I'll be able to test them out.
Looks like I'll try to use fast chariots and the halberd knights to hit stormcast hard. See what happens.

A herald of Nurgle will bring resilience, with a additional 5+ save to all units within 7". He won't work with lord of plagues, as Grandfathers gift (Nurgles rot) and Morbid vigour are both command abilities.

With love from Denmark
