im new to AoS and looking to buy my first 1000 point list, i really like the way the night haunt units look but they seem lackluster? how smashed into the ground am i going to get if i try running a list like this?

-Cairn Wraith

-Tomb Banshee

-Mortis Engine

-20 Zombies

-20 Zombies

-5 Hexwraith

-3 Spirit Hosts

Nighthaunters have no powerful units apart from the Mourngul (Forgeworld Model), but they are very resilient due to ignoring rends and getting saves against Mortal Wounds. At this points level, I would be tempted with something along the lines of this...

Leaders
Cairn Wraith - General - Trait: Ruler of the Night - Artefact: Sword of Unholy Power
Cairn Wraith

Units
Spirit Hosts x 6
Spirit Hosts x 6

Behemoths
Mourngul

Total: 1000/1000

General idea is you use the Sword of Unholy Power to summon the Mourngul and make people cry.

You can expand the army by adding in more of the same but over 2000 points they can struggle due to lack of unit choices.

The Mourngul is filthy, and most likely too cheap for what it does. The main problem with Nighthaunt as a faction is it's lack of proper characters in my opinion - you really do need characters with proper command abilities and wizards to work with them. Inspiring Presence just doesn't cut it since you need to lose at least 5 models in one turn for it to have a 1/6 chance of having an effect, and Nighthaunt units are rarely much larger than 5 models anyway. Look into something like a Coven Throne, it fits in thematically with Nighthaunt since it has the same spectral attacks as the Spirit Hosts do. On top of that, it is a spellcaster, and with the Ethereal rule, Nighthaund units benefit greatly from the Mystic Shield spell. You could also consider a Vampire Lord for your general, since he has a decent command ability, or even a Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon, since he has a great command ability for your spirit hosts.

I'm not quite sure what I would do for 1000 points. Nighthaunt is not exactly a complete faction, and they work best as a supplement to other Death factions, rather than as a stand alone army. That's my experience at least.

That isn't a bad start. You can get the Mortis Engine, 3 Spirit Hosts, and the Hexwraiths out of the Start Collecting! Malignants box, which is a good deal.

If you put the Hosts in cover they can be hard to root out and with cheap heroes you can spread your Allegiance Ability of a 6+ ignore wounds around easily. Since they can fly they are a bit more mobile than most, but they lack variety. If you go pure Nighthaunt then you are running Hosts, Cairn Wraiths, and Hexwraiths...maybe a Banshee for insurance against low Bravery armies. As Solaris says, they fill in to supplement your army nicely (and do well at camping objectives in cover) and benefit greatly from other spellcasters (you can make one Cairn Wraith a wizard, but he will get targeted pretty quick.).

The Mourngul is the core of this army I feel. The list that Gaz Taylor posted is what I use at 1k. I give the Mourngul Red Fury and a Cairn Wraith the Ring of Immortality.

i revised it and just for the simple lack of units didnt go with a pure night haunt list. my new list is this.

-wight king

-tomb banshee

-necromancer

-20 skeletons

-20 skeletons

-5 black knights

-3 spirit hosts

-3 spirit hosts

does that look okay? it seemed like a fairly well rounded starting 1000 pt list. i totally want mourngul, they look nasty!

Yes, this looks like a nice and well rounded list for 1000 points. It's not super strong, but it's not weak either, so if a fun and balanced list is what you were going for, this is good.

There is one change I would make here, however. Instead of having 2*20 Skeletons, I would get one unit of 10 with swords, and one unit of 30 with spears. 20 is just the wrong size for Skeletons in my opinion, since the unit is too large to let you attack with all your swords (all models will not get into attacking range), and too small to benefit from the size bonuses (lose one model, and you're down to one attack each). 10+30 remedies that nicely.

Good luck with your army!
